Welcome back to God-Free Bible Study — where we read the Bible exactly as written… and ask what actually makes sense.
In today’s episode, Adam of NOLA dives into Judges 7–9, and things go completely off the rails.
We’ve got Gideon shrinking an army from 32,000 down to 300 (because God needs the credit), a battle strategy involving torches, jars, and psychological warfare, and a dream about a barley cake knocking over a tent that somehow convinces everyone victory is guaranteed.
Totally normal military intelligence.
But that’s just the beginning.
From there, Gideon turns into a full-blown menace—threatening cities, torturing civilians, and proving that being “chosen by God” doesn’t exactly come with a moral upgrade. Then we get Abimelech… who decides the best path to power is murdering his 70 brothers on a stone and ruling through chaos—until things end in one of the most bizarre deaths in the Bible.
(Seriously… a millstone??)
In this episode we break down:
• Why God insists on fewer soldiers… but still needs battle tactics
• The infamous “lapping like a dog” army selection process
• The absurdity of the barley cake dream prophecy
