Mrs. Margerie Hooie, a Milford resident, tells reporter Douglas Kiker about the dangers created by the heavy truck traffic. During the previous decade, 19 tractor-trailers had overturned in her front yard, spilling everything from live chickens to rolls of carpet. She feared that eventually a truck could crash directly into her home.
With a population of only about 1,100 people, Milford was being used as a shortcut by truckers traveling between Interstates 80 and 84. U.S. Highway 209 ran directly through the center of town, creating constant noise, vibration, and safety concerns for residents.
The federal government attempted to restrict truck traffic on Route 209 because it passed through a national recreation area, but the proposed ban faced opposition from neighboring communities and the trucking industry. The American Trucking Association threatened legal action, leaving the issue at a stalemate.
