Critically ill children and their families gather in Gulf Shores for a special Make-A-Wish reunion filled with memories, friendship, and hope.
12-year-old Derek, battling a rare form of cancer, had his wish granted to meet New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert. After leaving the hospital, Derek was surprised when Hebert arrived at his home in a stretch limousine.
Another young boy, Donovan Moore, received a trip to Disney World through Make-A-Wish. His family says the experience lifted his spirits during a difficult time.
The annual Gulf Shores gathering also gives families a chance to remember children who are no longer with them and celebrate those who have overcome serious illnesses. The report also revisits Amanda Fields, Mobile's youngest heart-transplant patient at the time, who is now a healthy six-year-old.
Since its founding in Fairhope in 1987, Make-A-Wish had granted 120 wishes to critically ill children in the area.
