This leitmotif is first heard in the third scene of Das Rheingold.
This motif is a cruel mutation of the motif Rhinegold. What was a bright major second (tone) fall in the first two bars has become a minor second (semi-tone), evoking Woe or Grief, and also servitude, and the second half has changed from a spritely tune derived from the Rhinemaidens to the brooding ring motif. Sometimes in Das Rheingold, the final fortissimo is accompanied by the screams of the Nibelungs.
This motif appears quite often in the cycle, not always when the ring is being used, sometimes just to remind us of its power hanging over all events. Wagner will also some time only use the first half of the motif, which can be quite sufficient (for example the prelude to act 3 of Siegfried)
