Wagner Leitmotifs | 102 Gunther as Hero : Der Ring Des Nibelungen @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded September 2013 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in act 1 scene 1 of Gotterdammerung.
This motif represents Gunther, leader of the human tribe of the Gibichungs. Gunther is a hero (though his actions in Gotterdammerung don't suggest as much) but his motif which is derived from the Need of the Gods, and Power of the Gods motifs, is a very weak one for a hero, alluding to his weakness to greed as shown in this opera, and the fact that although he is leader, Hagen is the one who is calling the shots.
