Wagner Leitmotifs | 25 Confusion : Tannhäuser @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded July 2014 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in act 2 scene 2.

This motif represents Elizabeth's confusion at Tannhäuser's abortive telling of what happened to him during his time apart. The notion that his return is a real life miracle leads her to say that she is "Im traum bin ich und tör'ger als ein kind" ("In a dream, and as powerless as a child").

The motif is haltingly played on the oboe, and enigmatic instrument, and the last two chromatic notes are unexpected and uneasy after the apparent resolution of the motif on the F.
