Wagner Leitmotifs | 53 Ride of the Valkyries : Der Ring Des Nibelungen @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded August 2013 | Updated October 2024, 12 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in act 2 scene 1 of Die Walkure.
This motif represents the Valkyries riding out onto the battle field to collect the souls of dead heroes to take back to Valhalla the be Wotan's personal body guard.
This motif is built on the skeleton of the Erda motif. It comes in two forms: a minor and a major version. The minor version is normally heard as long passages which end with the major version, somewhat as a hurrah. It is an inversion of the Freia Pursued motif.
Although this motif is first officially heard in act 2 of Die Walkure, the closing bars of Das Rheingold have an unmistakable resemblance to this motif, perhaps foreshadowing what is to happen next in the cycle.
