We are so excited to start our annual 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting tomorrow with you!
As a church, we intentionally fast from things in our lives, such as certain foods, secular media, habits, etc., to focus on Jesus. Each day, you will receive a text that will lead you to a written devotional along with a video from someone on our Conduit team covering a Scripture that the Lord put on his or her heart to share with you.
Biblical fasting is choosing to abstain from something, often food, for a spiritual purpose, and it is an important spiritual discipline. Through this time, we hope you grow closer to God in your own life and together as a church. This is a sacred time to fast from the noise of the world and turn ourselves toward God. Fasting helps cultivate space to obey the Lord, draw closer to Him, and hear Him more clearly. It is a sweet time to deepen intimacy with our Father!
In the Old Testament, we see multiple times when people fasted and prayed for God’s intervention. Jesus Himself fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, preparing for the ministry ahead. I am reminded of John 6 in the New Testament when preparing for this fast, particularly the middle of the chapter when Jesus feeds the 5,000. The next day, the crowd arrives again looking for food and cannot find Jesus. Later, Jesus arrives, and they ask Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?” Jesus does not answer directly but instead focuses on why the crowd has come. He says, “You seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”
Jesus makes a contrast between material things and spiritual things.
Jesus says in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.” This is the first “I am” statement from Jesus that we see. In His response, Jesus hoped to lift their eyes from material bread and earthly needs. Instead, they needed to place their confidence and hope in Him.
So let’s remember this. Trust and believe in Jesus and the Gospel. He is the Bread of Life. The Lord alone satisfies us.
Here are a few ways you could participate during these next few weeks:
Fasting at a specific time each day, such as fasting one meal by skipping lunch to take a prayer walk or spend time in the Word
Fasting from specific types of food, such as giving up sugar, sweets, caffeine, or other daily comforts
If you are unable to fast from meals, there are still other options:
Fasting from media or entertainment, such as social media, podcasts, Netflix, or screen time, to quiet the noise and make space to hear God’s voice
Fasting from distractions, such as shopping or spending, gaming, or hobbies that consume your time and focus
We leave it up to you what these 21 days will look like. Pray and ask the Lord what He is calling you to be obedient to.
Whatever you choose, go all in! Tell a friend or family member what you have prayerfully decided so you have accountability. Look at your calendar for the rest of the month and make any changes you need to set yourself up for this sacred time.
And remember to pray. Pray today before beginning this fast, and pray every day during it. Truly lean into the Lord and write down your prayers during this time. Watch how faithful the Lord is!
If you are like me, your first instinct may be to approach this time as a checklist or a goal to accomplish. Set that aside. Fasting is between you and the Lord, and my prayer is that we lay down our sin, our worries, and our control at the feet of Jesus today, tomorrow, during these next 21 days, and for the rest of our lives.
I am excited for you and for these next few weeks. Praying for you!
