Scripture to read and think about today: 2 Chronicles 20
I don’t know about you, but when life’s challenges start heaping up, the crises are flying, and I start feeling overwhelmed, something inside me says, OK—let’s try harder. We can do this. Ante up! But scripture shows us a different perspective when we look at Jehoshaphat.
When a huge army positioned itself against Judah, he didn’t first turn to strategy or strength. He turned to fasting and prayer—what we’re doing right now during this first month of 2026. In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat calls all of Judah to humble themselves before God. He ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting, and that meant everyone! I love how scripture details in verse 13 that “all the men of Judah stood before the Lord with their little ones, wives, and children.” What a great invitation to start teaching our children about prayer and fasting, setting a rhythm for every new year to get on our faces before the Lord. Invite your kids to pray with you for even one day of this fast. You might be surprised how open they are to “fast”—even for just 30 minutes of a video game—to pray alongside you.
Jehoshaphat’s prayer becomes the heartbeat of fasting: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” Utter humility and dependence.
In that moment, the Spirit of the Lord comes upon a man named Jahaziel (grandson of Benaiah—King David’s personal guard! Talk about generational faithfulness!) and speaks through him this important message: “Do not be afraid…the battle is not yours, but God’s…you will not even need to fight. Take your position; then stand still and watch the Lord’s victory. He is with YOU…”
As a worship leader, I especially love what happens on the morning of the Lord’s battle: “...the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for His holy splendor.” At that moment, “the Lord caused the armies to start fighting among themselves.” Not one enemy escaped that day. The armies destroyed each other.
The story ends in verse 29: “When all the surrounding kingdoms heard that the Lord himself had fought against the enemies of Israel, the fear of God came over them. So Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.”
Jehoshaphat reminds us that fasting isn’t about trying harder—it’s about surrendering deeper. Fasting and prayer can shift outcomes far beyond human capability. We can set goals and make plans for this year, but if we’re not first on our faces before the Lord, we miss the firm foundation of peace every time. When we quiet ourselves before Him, He meets us with guidance, rest, and victory that only He can provide.
