Silent Hill 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Halo: Combat Evolved - that list is an embarrassment of video game riches, a selection of titles so strong that had they been released over an entire calendar year, you’d probably think it had been a pretty amazing 12 months.
But they weren’t. You might be shocked, staggered or perhaps even aghast to learn that they all came out during one extraordinary seven-week period, and that is a big part of why I think 2001 is one of gaming’s greatest years.
In this video, I take a look at some of the best games released during 2001, to try and explain why it was one of the best gamers have ever witnessed, looking at the revolutionary, the genre defining and very good titles released during the year.
