Out of the trilogy of TimeSplitters titles, released on PlayStation 2, Xbox and Gamecube, perhaps unsurprisingly it’s the series maiden outing which has aged the worst.

Back in the year 2000 when I picked it up with my PlayStation 2 on launch day, I was very impressed by developer Free Radical's work and TimeSplitters arcade stylings, zany characters and varied settings.

Playing it in the present, I spent much of my time teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown, as I desperately tried to navigate a campaign that was – alarmingly often – deeply, deeply unfair.

Here are my thoughts regarding TimeSplitters, some 23 years after it first hit store shelves.
