1st Year Apprentice Locksmith TAFE Assignment #3 โ Making a Plug Cradle From Scratch
In this video, we take a look at a typical 1st-year apprentice locksmith TAFE assignment, where apprentices learn the fundamental skills of the locksmith trade by manufacturing a plug cradle from a solid block of metal.
This project is designed to teach the core workshop skills every locksmith needs, including:
๐น Measuring and marking out metal accurately
๐น Reading dimensions and working to tolerances
๐น Using hand tools safely and correctly
๐น Filing, shaping, and finishing metal surfaces
๐น Developing patience and attention to detail
๐น Turning a raw piece of metal into a useful locksmith tool
A plug cradle is used to support lock cylinders while rekeying and servicing locks, making it an excellent training project for apprentice locksmiths. By building the tool from scratch, apprentices gain valuable experience in metalworking, precision measurement, and toolmaking skills that form the foundation of the locksmith trade.
If you're considering a career in locksmithing or are currently completing a locksmith apprenticeship, this video provides a great insight into the practical workshop training completed at TAFE.
