U-Matic S tape containing footage of a performance by Aretha Franklin and a campaign speech from Mayor Coleman A. Young both from a re-election campaign event at New Bethel Baptist Church, followed by an appearance by Young at the union hall of West Side Local 174 U.A.W. The tape ends with brief footage of a man discussing the relationship between the City and General Motors behind the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly project.

The New Bethel Baptist Church campaign event is captured with a hand-held camera positioned in the church's balcony. This segment begins with Aretha Franklin singing at the church's pulpit, and backed by the church's organ. Mayor Young and several others sit behind her as she performs.

Aretha Franklin's performance ends with a standing ovation from the audience, as Mayor Coleman Young steps up to the podium. In the introductory portion of his speech, he references New Bethel's Rev. Robert Smith, Jr. He then criticizes the city's media, talks about the revitalization of downtown under his administration, declares that Black Bottom has been rebuilt in reference new developments neighboring the Chrysler Freeway, and talks about new developments along Twelfth Street since the unrest of 1967. He also lists other accomplishments under his administration including the construction of Cobo Hall, the Millender Center, and a higher percentage of African American and female officers in the Detroit Police Department. He then turns to discussing the importance of the church in Detroit and in African American communities, and importance of cultivating a sense of self-respect. As Young turns to talk about the charitable efforts of New Bethel, the video cuts to later in his speech where he announces that the city has submitted New Bethel's application for funding for an apartment complex. He then stresses the New Bethel is not downtown, and that he is committed to every neighborhood. He characterizes churches and community groups as his "secret weapon" in the neighborhoods. Young concludes his speech to applause.

After a cut, the tape picks up with Mayor Coleman A. Young seated behind a table on stage with his aide Larry Simmons at the union hall of West Side Local 174 U.A.W. A man speaks to the assembled union members from a podium in front of Walter Speck's mural. "Mayor Young '89" campaign signs are posted around the stage. During a moment of applause, the camera pans around to show the crowd. The camera then follows Young into the hall's hallway as he exits the event. Young pauses to talk to a reporter about his campaign.

After Young exists, the video again cuts, and gives way to a man speaking about Tom Murphy of General Motors' relationship with Mayor Coleman A. Young's office which allowed for the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly project.

The recordings are on a 3M UCA 30s U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a handwritten City of Detroit Department of Public Information Video Production label on its cover.
