U-Matic S tape containing footage taken at a pair of downtown 1990 Christmas events--the Festival of Trees at Cobo Hall, and the Renaissance Christmas at the Renaissance Center on November 24th--followed by a remnant of an earlier recording of Mayor Coleman A. Young's stump speech at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church as part of his 1990 re-election campaign.

The tape begins with footage of attendees and displays at the Festival of Trees. In addition to a multitude of decorated Christmas trees, the event also features a bank of computers where children print out letters to Santa Claus, a costumed snowman and reindeer, phones offering a connection to Santa's elves at the North Pole, a craft table, an ice fishing game, a photo opportunity with Santa, a household safety diorama, a large gingerbread village, mock-ups of decorated rooms, a group of stuffed bears inside of a Chrysler Le Baron convertible, singers, and a gift shop--all of which are captured on the tape.

The Renaissance Christmas portion of the tape begins with footage of a petting zoo set up by Upland Hills Farm inside the entrance to the Renaissance Center. Turkeys, lambs, a sheep, a rabbit, a calf, and a cow are among the animals that children are shown interacting with.

Next the camera moves to the inner atrium where animatronic displays, trees, and banners decorate the space. A woman in historical costume hands out balloons to children. Shots of strolling puppeteers, jugglers, musicians, mimes, and others in "renaissance" costume follow. The segment ends with a set of shots of a horse-drawn carriages passing on Renaissance Drive, outside of the Renaissance Center.

The final portion of the tape consists of a remnant of footage of Mayor Coleman A. Young giving a stump speech at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church as part of his 1990 re-election campaign. From the pulpit, Young talks about the diversity of his constituency, and the efforts he took at the beginning of his time as mayor to make city government more inclusive. He also mentions the Detroit Police Department's former S.T.R.E.S.S. unit, refutes the idea that he is focused on developing the city's downtown to the detriment of the neighborhoods, and states that the city's investment in Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly and General Motors' Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly was important to maintain employment. The recording ends mid-speech.

The recording is on a 3M UCA 30S U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label. The tape is housed in a black plastic latching case with a handwritten City of Detroit Department of Public Information Video Production label.
