1987 Street Smart Trailer with Christopher Reeve and Morgan Freeman
Released in 1987 and directed by Jerry Schatzberg, the film stars Christopher Reeve as Jonathan Fisher, a struggling New York journalist desperate to save his career. Under pressure from his editor, he invents a story about a fictional pimp named “Tyrone” — but things spiral out of control when a real-life pimp, the terrifying Leo “Fast Black” Smalls, played by Morgan Freeman, is accused of murder and believes the article is about him.
What starts as a lie turns into a nightmare involving murder, blackmail, corruption, and survival on the streets of New York. The deeper Jonathan gets pulled into Fast Black’s world, the more dangerous the consequences become for everyone around him.
Trivia:
This was the film that launched Morgan Freeman into Hollywood recognition, he earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
The screenplay was inspired by a REAL incident involving screenwriter David Freeman, who admitted he once fabricated a magazine story about a pimp while working for New York magazine in the 1960s.
Even though the movie is set in New York City, much of it was actually filmed in Montreal, with production crews importing Harlem street signs, mailboxes, and even garbage to recreate the city atmosphere.
Christopher Reeve personally fought for the film to get made and agreed to appear in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace partly so the studio would finance Street Smart.
The jazz-inspired score featured music by Miles Davis and Robert Irving III.
Despite critical praise, the movie flopped at the box office because of poor marketing by Cannon Films. Over the years, though, it has become a cult favorite for fans of gritty neo-noir crime dramas.
The film is available on DVD and is on streaming services Tubi, MGM+ and others depending on your location.
