Mel Brooks’ *Spaceballs* blasted into theaters in ’87 with a ridiculous mission: parody everything from *Star Wars* to *Star Trek*—and it nailed it.
Plot:
Starring Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, and Mel Brooks (in two roles), this absurd adventure follows Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog sidekick Barf as they race to save Princess Vespa from the evil Spaceballs. With help from Yogurt and the magical “Schwartz,” they battle Dark Helmet and President Skroob to save planet Druidia’s clean air.
Trivia:
* George Lucas gave the thumbs up and even let Lucas own film divisions help with post-production.
* The Millennium Falcon makes a cameo!
* No action figures were ever made, per an agreement with Lucas.
* Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode? Yep—named after *Spaceballs*.
* Moranis improvised the iconic “doll scene.”
* Mel Brooks announced a sequel for 2027 The Schwartz Awakens with most of the original cast.
Released by MGM, the film made $38M on a $22.7M budget and lives on as a cult favorite—silly, quotable, and endlessly rewatchable.
