Here for your viewing pleasure is a 1968 Gottlieb Paul Bunyan pinball machine. This is a pretty interesting and somewhat unique machine in that it has six flippers. The playfield is laid out in such a way that it's necessary to use all six flippers to achieve the goals of the game. Essentially, the player is trying to complete the A-B-C sequence. Once that's done, one letter lights for 500 points. Once the lit letter is hit, the top rollunder gate lights alternately for 500 points or extra ball and resets the A-B-C sequence. So there's always something to shoot for and the big goal is the rollunder gate, which can only be hit with the two upper flippers. AND this carries over from game-to-game and player-to-player. If you complete A and B, you can start a new game and try to complete C. It was an incentive for players to keep playing. It's pretty cool! So if you're staring at the schematics trying to figure out why the A-B-C sequence doesn't reset on a new game, don't bother!
This game is way more fun than I expected it to be, but let's face it... Gottlieb made some pretty neat games in the 60's and they're often more fun than they look.
And here's some interesting lore about this game: it's the last "normal" pinball machine that Wayne Neyens had a hand in designing for Gottlieb. Wayne designed nearly 200 games for Gottlieb and this was basically the last one. AND it was one of the FIRST machines that Steve Kirk helped design. Steve would go on to be more well-known for his unusual designs with Stern in the late-70's, such as Stars, Meteor and Nine Ball.
Anyway, in addition to Steve Kirk and Wayne Neyens, the great Ed Krynski also played a role in designing Paul Bunyan. Artwork was done by Art Stenholm. For more info on this game, see here:
