A fascinating glimpse at some very early championship skating with this incredibly rare footage of the 1957 European Championships from Vienna. Marika Kilius went on to find fame and success with her second partner, Hans Jurgen Baulmer. But as a child she was initially teamed with Franz Ningel. Yet here, at only 14 years of age and already in their third Europeans together, she had outgrown him and so we have the very rare occurrence whereby the female partner is actually taller than her male counterpart. As a result of her growth spurt, this was to be their final season together.
Franz went on to partner his future wife Margret Gobl and their partnership culminated in the World bronze medal in Prague 1962.
To my knowledge this is the earliest television footage of a skating championship currently to be found although I hope that more will turn up in the future.
