Making an appearance in the shop today is a 1951 Williams Hayburners.
This machine is really neat, in spite of the simplistic layout and conjoined impulse flippers.
The basic premise of the game is to get a horse across the finish line in as few balls as possible. The game ends when a horse crosses the finish line or the player uses all 5 balls. Making it to the finish line in one ball scores 25 million points; two balls scores 20 million points; three balls scores 15 million, and so on.
Before the game begins, the player is randomly assigned a horse which is indicated in the backbox as "your hoss" and on the playfield. If the player's "hoss" wins the race, replays are also scored. The number of replays depends on the number of balls used to get the horse to the finish line: one ball provides 25 replays; two balls awards 20 replays, etc.
Even though the game has "for amusement only" and "gambling not permitted" on the score and instruction cards, this game is obviously intended for gambling. And it's great for doing that with friends and family.
The backbox animation is cool to watch while the ball is in play.
