Danny Kaye was born as David Daniel Kaminsky on January 18, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York City. He was the youngest of three children born to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, Jacob and Clara Kaminsky. Growing up, Kaye was interested in show business and began performing in local talent shows and vaudeville acts. He later adopted the stage name Danny Kaye and became a popular performer on the radio, in nightclubs, and in musical revues. Kaye's big break came in 1941 when he was cast in the Broadway musical "Lady in the Dark" which was a huge success. This led to a successful film career, with Kaye starring in over 17 movies including "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "Hans Christian Andersen," and "White Christmas." Aside from his film and stage work, Kaye was also a humanitarian and ambassador for UNICEF. He traveled the world to raise awareness and funds for children in need and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1987 for his humanitarian efforts. Kaye was also known for his talents as a singer, dancer, and comedian, often incorporating physical comedy and improvisation into his performances. He was a frequent guest on television shows and even hosted his own variety show, "The Danny Kaye Show," which aired from 1963 to 1967. Kaye passed away on March 3, 1987, at the age of 74 due to heart failure. He is remembered as a talented performer and humanitarian who brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world.
Note: The first 78 RPM record came into existence around 1894, and in 1912 the Gramophone Company established 78 rotations per minute as their recording standard. The production of shellac records continued throughout the 78 rpm era, with "non-breakable" 78 rpm vinyl records being introduced in the 1940s. The popularity of the 33 1/3 rpm "Long Play" record, initially released in 1948, caused the 78 rpm record to become obsolete before the end of the 1950s. As these 78 rpm recordings are quite old, they may contain derogatory language and/or negative stereotypes. It is important to evaluate such recordings within their historical context and consider them as a reflection of the attitudes prevalent at the time.
