When it comes to fine jewelry and high end diamond rings, 18k white gold and platinum have often been used for making the settings. In this video, we compare an 18 white gold ring beside a platinum ring to show you the visual differences between these 2 metals.
As you can see in the video, there isn’t much of a visual difference between both rings. FYI, both rings are created with the same design and mounted with a similar sized diamond. Are you able to see any color differences between them?
Most people can’t. In fact, I can’t as well when looking at the rings casually. However, if you scrutinize the rings long enough, you might see a very very very slight tone of color between the 2. But on the whole, both rings look identical.
Some people prefer buying platinum as they think the metal is more durable and is able to withstand impacts better. This is because platinum is softer and when a force is subjected to it, the metal deforms instead of chipping away on a microscopic level.
Being rarer, platinum is much more expensive than white gold and they also weigh more. This is because platinum is denser and the molecules are packed closer together in their crystalline structure. Platinum has some advantages over white gold. One of them is that they don’t require replating and the other is that platinum is suitable for hypo allergenic people with skin issues.
On the other hand, 18k white gold is a hard material and they are less expensive. In its raw form, white gold is actually dull and yellowish in color. It requires an electroplating process to coat the metal with rhodium to give it the bright shiny appearance. However, white gold contains nickel and this may cause allergic reactions to people with skin problems. Other than that, I personally favor white gold over platinum as it is cost effective.
