Japan consumes a lot of American movies. Often, the titles are kept in English, but sometimes they're localized (translated) to appeal to a Japanese audience. When those translations are translated back into English, the movie titles sometimes aren't recognizable anymore. When and why do translators take liberties and outright change movie titles? How does this relate to translating art and entertainment as a whole?
In the future, I would love to take a deeper dive into localization and why it's so important. For now, here's a list of 17 localized movie titles to introduce my point.
