This leitmotif is first heard in the prelude to act 2.

This motif represents Isolde's impatience to extinguish the torch outside her bedroom, the signal that it is safe for Tristan to approach.

The strings in the background are syncopated (off the beat) and so give the impression that the music is trying to get ahead of itself, conveying the idea that Isolde too is wrestling with herself to summon Tristan against Brangane's advice.
