#15: Dragon Shrine
Aldia's Keep seemed to serve as a gateway to this place: an opulent castle perched precariously at the pinnacle of the Aerie. Howling winds and drakes abound, and the faithful knights of the Dragon covenant standing guard, ever-watchful.
The route to the top of the shrine seems as though to be a test, to ensure that only the worthy shall pass; by defeating their greatest warriors, we prove ourselves worthy of an audience with the mysterious and powerful Ancient Dragon.

The Ancient Dragon has bestowed upon us the Ashen Mist Heart, yet another key item that will allow us to proceed. This mysterious object allows us to enter the memories of the fallen... its not quite clear at first, but upon some insight and recollection, we may be able to deduce that with this item we can traverse inside the Trees of Giants. These withered old trunks hold some key facets of Drangleics past, and offer us the ability to fight during the great war against the Giants.
There are three trees in total, each with variations of events, a myriad of items, the end of Benharts questline, and a big ole boss: The Giant Lord.

Prepare to experience your new obsession it claims on the box. Yes, but also confusion and frustration. Daggerfall is a first-person dungeon-crawler, second installment of the Elder Scrolls series, and it pioneered some of the elements that would become standard in later titles. It was a highly-ambitious project, and it did some interesting things that were never seen again within the series.

No, really. This place is horrible. Its a vast expanse of nothingness, periodically obscuring your vision entirely for longer than it isnt, and you get attacked relentlessly by lightning/ice reindeers from hell as you try to cross the wastes to fight the boss on the other side. And theres no other bonfires.
If you dont hate your life, you will now. Luckily, most of my bad experience with this place was had in my first go around when SotFS was first released, so Im ready for the punishment. I found it best to head straight for the second building in the center, arriving at its northern wall, then heading straight towards the small canyon where the Kings Pets reside, aiming slightly right of the visible enemies in the distance.
Lud and Zallen are just like Aava, but if you arent quick enough, youll find yourself overwhelmed by both at once. Zallen will enter an enraged state when he gets low on health, become more resistant to damage, and regenerate a fair amount of HP. My weapon eventually broke from the drawn-out battle, so I do recommend having repair powders on hand, but I was able to use my offhand weapon to finish the fight.

The last big boy for us to take down rests far below Majula, down the pit and through the Gutter. This place is very much remniscient of a disgusting Blighttown, and much like that place, there is a way to easily skip pretty much the entire thing; Black Gulch is also quite easy to pass through once familiar. The Rotten awaits in his lava-filled arena...

With the Kings Ring in our possession, we can command the great gates of Vendrick to open before us; though there are several options for us now, passage to Aldias Keep lies on the critical path, and so onwards we journey.
In the worn down shack just outside the gloomy keep, we find an old friend... Lucatiel. Indeed she has come far, but it seems that the curse is claiming her; her wits are diminished to the point where she barely recognizes us. With her last breath, she gives us her armor and sword, and asks only one thing: to be remembered. In her honor, I will carry her memory: as a great and honorable knight of Mirrah, and a good friend. Rest in Peace, my dear Lucatiel. You will never be forgotten.
