More than $175 million (£130 million) of taxpayers’ money has been spent on wildlife crossings across the UK, including a $16 million fish pass in Nottingham. A spokesperson for the UK Environment Agency said: “Right now, salmon and other migratory species are in serious decline. It is essential we take action to enable these fish to migrate and reproduce.” National Highways has also started establishing “Green Bridges” across the country to help wildlife cross dangerous A-roads. They aim to provide safe passage for rare species and protect habitats that have long been disrupted by the road network.
