Understanding pointers/address and how memory works is essential if youre serious about building any app or game.
This is probably not the best example since std::vectors themselves change size and address (along with a few other things I didnt talk about..)
The point is you should get into the habit of visualizing what memory looks like and also get into the habit of debugging.

Try building your text game (or a game mechanic represented in text). UML stands for Unified Modeling Language. Use it to visualize your code and understand it better. You can also use it to understand other peoples code. Its probably not suited for non OOP languages, but in gamedev, OOP does seem to be more prevalent than other fields.
