Try building your text game (or a game mechanic represented in text). UML stands for Unified Modeling Language. Use it to visualize your code and understand it better. You can also use it to understand other people's code. It's probably not suited for non OOP languages, but in gamedev, OOP does seem to be more prevalent than other fields.
