One person was killed and six others were injured in a crash involving a medical transport bus and a dump truck Wednesday afternoon in Ontario County, Sheriff David Cirencione said.
Calls came in at 1:49 p.m. for a crash at State Route 488 and Freshour Road in Hopewell. Cirencione said the northbound bus entered the intersection and was struck by the 10-wheel dump truck.
A passenger on the bus was pronounced dead at the scene, Cirencione said, while four others were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester — including three by helicopter — with serious injuries.
"It was very apparent from when the first investigator got on scene that this was a very serious collision," Cirencione said. "People that were calling in on the phone were reporting multiple patients with serious injuries. We were taking reports that people were hanging out of the windows of the bus, so it naturally elicited a massive response from law enforcement, fire and EMS."
Another passenger had minor injuries and was taken to Clifton Springs Hospital, while the bus driver was taken to F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua with minor injuries, Cirencione said. The dump truck driver was not injured and was cooperating with the investigation.
Cirencione said the intersection is known for crashes.
"It's known for personal injury crashes," he said. "Specifically for northbound vehicles that are going to cross Route 488, it is a challenge. You have to stop and definitely take an extra second to make sure nobody is coming from either direction."
