President Donald Trump is celebrating a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that allows his Executive Order restricting mail-in-voting to remain in effect.
During a March 31 signing ceremony, Trump commented, "It’s about voter integrity. You want to have honest voting in the country."
It ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create lists of U.S. citizens over the age of 18 who can vote, for the Justice Department to prioritize investigations into officials who give federal ballots to ineligible voters, and for the U.S. Postal Service to issue a new rule regarding its role cross-checking names with voter lists and not delivering ballots in states that don’t hand over voter data.
That new rule was filed last week.
In an interview with The National News Desk on Tuesday, Ally Triolo, the Election Integrity Communications Director at the Republican National Committee, applauded the ruling.
"Obviously, allowing federal agencies to work with states to verify citizenship, verify voter eligibility...we are facing a crisis in this nation when it comes to trust in our elections. So any security measures that we can have in place to strengthen the confidence of our voters, that their votes will be secure, that is a top priority," she said.
Democratic leaders in 23 states and Washington, D.C, filed a lawsuit, arguing the president’s order is unconstitutional and an “attempt to seize control of election rules from the states and Congress. They added that they would “continue to vigorously pursue all available avenues to challenge this executive order.”
Following the ruling, Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown wrote,
"Fortunately, today’s decision does not bless the substance of the president’s actions, it simply says states must wait slightly longer to challenge them. We stand ready to take action to protect the integrity of our elections and prevent this clearly unconstitutional overreach from taking effect."
He added, “States control elections, not the president.”
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said,
"This is all made up. It’s made up BS to try to scare people to cause them in advance to question the results because they know they’re going to lose."
The court’s conservative majority ruled that the states did not have a legal right to challenge the order because it hadn’t gone into effect yet, but it did not weigh in on the legality of the order itself, writing “on that score time will tell”
