Drivers hitting the road for Labor Day weekend are facing another costly trip to the pump, with gas prices remaining elevated after an expensive summer.
Supreme Wilson of Rochester stopped at a Henrietta gas station Tuesday afternoon to fill up his Ford F-150 — something he said he does about every three days.
"$80. Yeah, easy — $80," Wilson said of a typical fill-up.
With a trip to Florida coming up, Wilson expects to spend about $200 on gas, even though he'll be taking a different vehicle.
"It'll be around $200 if everything goes well," he said. "You know how traffic is — expressways, thruways — all that gets congested."
Tyler Siebert of Henrietta said high prices helped convince him to switch from a gas-powered vehicle to a hybrid. He now spends about $50 every three weeks at the pump.
"I knew that the gas prices were going to go up, but I didn't think they'd go up this much and stay this high," Siebert said. "It's been really a big benefit for us."
The sustained increase has come amid the war in Iran, which has helped drive oil and fuel prices higher.
Valerie Puma, a communications specialist for AAA, said Labor Day typically brings one final surge in driving demand before summer comes to an end.
"Labor Day weekend is the last spike that we would see in demand as people hit the roads for really that last hurrah of summer," Puma said. "But we've kind of seen this continued high level of prices really throughout August."
Puma said August was the second-most expensive August on record for gas prices in New York and the most expensive since 2022, with prices more than $1 higher than a year ago.
"We're really feeling that in our wallets," she said. "It's hard when you're a family of five and you want to have a big summer of lots of road trips."
