DonnaThe project of lifestyle minimalism we see today can be seen as a response to the rampant consumerism of modern lifestyles across the globe in developed countries such as the US, Japan, and the UK. It seeks to reorganize our entire lives according to ideals of intentionality, autonomy, and competence. This begins with the things we surround ourselves with. Using Self-Determination Theory as a frame work, these are qualities that make us happy, that allow us to feel like we are living a life that we chose, and continually choose, on a day to day basis. In a 2020 paper, researchers interviewed people who chose to identify as living a minimalist lifestyle. They found that these people felt less pressure to conform or to keep up with competitive consumerist ethics. While this sounds like a movement everyone should be partaking in, minimalists in the community are releasing video after video about how this lifestyle got toxic. Today we will examine why.

Best known for his role as SpongeBob on broadway, Slater shocked the world when he decided to divorce his wife, and move on with the pop singer. What makes this situation so shocking to fans is that Slater’s wife Lily Jay, just gave birth to their son. Ariana Grande is no stranger to cheating accusations, but her past romances were always treated as drama. However, this situation has fans reacting differently.
The Whittaker’s story went viral back in 2020 when photographer Mark Laita, interviewed the family at their home. The video touched many and spurred successful GoFundMes to aid the family with their living expenses. However, a YouTuber by the name of Tyler Olivera recently scrutinized the legitimacy of the charity, questioning Mark’s honor. While Mark did fire back with receipts, the headache of the drama caused him to pull back from the family. Many now accuse Olivera of ruining the Whittaker’s lives, all to clout-chase and to make a sensationalist video.
The 15 million sub YouTuber, Airrack just got caught faking his videos. While many have claimed this is a “nothing burger”, it reveals just how much YouTube has changed. Today we take a deep dive into the controversy of Airrack and even talk to a former team member that used to famously appear in the videos.
Imagine minding your own business, as you walk down the street. A stranger points a camera in your face, without saying a word. You don’t respond and he starts shouting expletives at you. You’re familiar with social media, so you know this guy’s motive. He’s one of those influencers who attempts to get a reaction out of people for views. EVERYONE HATES THIS TYPE OF INFLUENCER, but there is a type that gets away with this behavior. You may be thinking of the streamers that troll people like Jack Doherty or Johnny Somali. Nope, everyone hates them. Perhaps it’s a more low key type, like fitness influencers who film themselves at the gym and then get mad at people who walk in their shot? Nope everyone hates them too. The type of influencer that gets away with this behavior are called, “1st Amendment Auditors”. While there is some good in this community, it would be foolish to ignore the negatives. Today’s video will discuss these issues.

Gaining over 18 million followers on Tik Tok, Matt Rife’s success eventually led him to a Netflix special. Known for being the “hot comedian” fans swooned over Rife’s crowd work, pushing his Tik Tok content into the millions of views. However, his rise came to a sudden stall when the internet turned against him, over one joke in particular. Perhaps this is the result time and time again of a star who rises to fame too fast, or perhaps beauty isn’t that advantageous after all.

If you’re familiar with the name Fousey, you’re probably familiar with the never ending cycle he takes his viewers on, that rollercoaster ride of rallying behind this underdog, the excitement of seeing his triumphs, and then like clockwork, a seemingly inevitable descent into chaos. Viewers disappointed by his actions, he withdraws from the internet to work on his well being. Months later he reemerges, looking visibly healthy, and ready to share whatever project he’s launching next. Like a friend who we thought vanished from the face of the earth, we welcome him with open arms, optimistic and sort of forgetting about the chaos that happened prior. And just like that, the narrative starts over, as we root for the underdog

Buzzfeed. With over 20 million subscribers and a wheelhouse of the internet’s most talented creators, it is simply astounding that a media company can go from having a huge presence online to seemingly insignificant overnight. Whether you hate or love them, there is no denying that Buzzfeed was a media juggernaut around 2016 producing some of the most viral videos and getting hordes of users to take their quizzes. Gaining attention from the 20 something crowd Buzzfeed was a force to be reckoned with. But with such a stronghold on the online community and their numbers reinforcing that, how in the world did this massive enterprise lose their audience?

David Dobrik has many copycats, but only one has found ultimate success. His name is Alex Warren and he’s been accused of not only copying Dobrik’s videos, but his look, his mannerisms, and oh yes the laugh. Despite Warren being called out by the comments, big internet personalities, and even by Dobrik’s friends, the kid has managed to outmaneuver the criticism and ride the wave of internet fame. But the bigger question is why? Why would someone choose to go down in infamy as the biggest David Dobrik knock off? Despite the fame and money, it doesn’t seem worth it when it’s a known path to inevitable irrelevancy. Is Warren just a shape shifting sociopath or is there something else going on?

As bizarre as this rebranding is for the average person, these communities have large followings and their glorification may have negative consequences. As an aside, It is important to dispel any myths regards who commits mass shootings. A common myth is that most of them are carried out by people who are psychotic— that is people who are mentally ill. Psychiatry professor Dr. Ragy Girgis of Columbia University states:
“The public tends to link serious mental illnesses, like schizophrenia or psychotic disorders, with violence and mass shootings. But serious mental illness—specifically psychosis—is not a key factor in most mass shootings or other types of mass murder. Approximately 5% of mass shootings are related to severe mental illness. And although a much larger number of mass shootings (about 25%) are associated with non-psychotic psychiatric or neurological illnesses, including depression, and an estimated 23% with substance use, in most cases these conditions are incidental.”

Videos such as “The Mr. Beastificiation of YouTube” and “Money killed YouTube, Here’s how we fix it” aptly describes this sentiment. Regardless, Mr. Beast’s view count and even the view count of his alleged copycats seem to counter this argument entirely. So called “boring content” doesn't get millions of views. There seems to be a common theme among young stars who stumble upon internet fame. They HAVE to leave the suburbs in order to succeed. While the move is innocent and natural, this glamorization and romanticization of city life may undermine current Urban planning movements for walkable cities not so centered around cars.

Justin Bieber’s mother would post her son’s performance from a local talent competition, without much thought. At 12 years old, Bieber would sing songs from Aretha Franklin, Ne-Yo, Lil Bow Wow, and more. Although his voice earned him 2nd place, it also caught the attention of his current manager Scooter Braun. Braun and Bieber would work together, eventually launching his career into pop stardom at 16 years old. Bieber’s music was a hit with teen girls, branding him a heartthrob of his generation. From the iconic haircut to the cheesy love songs, the masses caught Bieber Fever. This was truly a dream come true for Justin and his mother. However, not everyone was so impressed with the pop star’s rise. As the 16 year old amassed a fan base, he also amassed an equal amount of dedicated haters. Every move began to be analyzed and criticized, his songs were parodied and made fun of, and legacy media also boarded the hate train. Today though, that vile disdain for Justin Bieber has dissipated. Individuals are no longer shunned for listening to Bieber’s songs. How in the world did that happen? How does someone who is so hated go to someone who is so loved? While it seems like an impossibility, many celebrities do it all the time. Bieber looks as if, he is going down that road as well. In today’s video we discuss that phenomena, the celebrity redemption arc.

While generally well liked, Brown has been demonized for trivial matters such as these ever since her climb to fame. However, she isn’t the first who has had to deal with hate as massive as this. We’ve seen the same type of disdain for teen public figures such as Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Charlie D’ Amelio. Today, we explore why this happens. From YouTube's inception, we've seen different genres of content and creators rise and fall. While this phenomena is a natural occurrence in the world of entertainment (trends come and go), YouTube's almighty algorithm also plays an integral role in this process. The algorithm over the years has evolved with the sole purpose of commanding an audience and keeping them on the platform. From prioritizing click through all the way to highlighting watch time, YouTube adding these metrics had a massive impact on the type of creators being promoted. Each new iteration of the algorithm is building creators who will become more influential than the next.
With the popularity of YouTuber Mr. Beast, it makes one wonder what YouTube is up to. What is it about his content that causes the algorithm to promote his videos?

Although many of the studies show certain results, there is no way to test and observe ancient humans. So, the conclusions in a number of papers are theories as to why humans may behave the way they do from an evolutionary perspective. This is done by observing other animals and modern day humans. As a result, evolutionary psychology is often reductionist and can fail to take into account social factors. My point is don’t go using evolutionary psychology as an excuse to cheat or something LOL. Additionally, although "Male Gaze"/"Female Gaze" are terms coined by Laura Mulvey, we will be discussing both terms from the perspective of the Tik Tok trend.
The beauty and personal care industry for men and women is a multibillion dollar business. While some of that is spent for reasons of self satisfaction, a large amount is spent to attract a mate. There’s just one problem. Unless you date the same sex, sometimes what you think is attractive about yourself isn’t what the opposite sex is attracted to. This phenomena is commonly known as the male vs female gaze. The male gaze describes what men typically view as attractive in men and women. The female gaze describes what women typically view as attractive in men and women. This has sparked discussion all over the internet about what causes these differences in opinion. Today we will be examining the possible cause of this difference by analyzing the male and female gaze from an evolutionary perspective.

Because of this, it leaves many wondering why she would walk away from a tremendous amount benefits by not partaking in the 2021 reboot. On her podcast and many other interviews, McCurdy explains how damaging acting as a child was for her mental health. This damage has caused her to leave this career path indefinitely.
