This episode examines My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic as a work of art, analyzing its influences, creators, and how its adult fans are uniquely capable of appreciating the show in a way its intended audience of young children might not be able to. In Part 1 our discussion focuses on the character archetypes found in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic while in Part 2 we examine specific references and influences on the show. We conclude with a discussion of what the show's artistic legacy could be, and how even a seemingly unoriginal and derivative work of art can still be perfectly OK to like, and even love.
In this episode The Elements of Brony welcomes new panelist Chris "MisfortuneDogged" LaFortune, an animation enthusiast, blogger, and writer whose written analysis of MLP episodes has even drawn the attention of members of the MLP writing staff. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode IV: An Inspiration to us All (Part 1 of 2)

------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why Bronies happened is a question that many people, including many Bronies, continue to ask; and too often the questions are directed at the wrong people: the show's writers, animators, and voice actors, and even outside commentators and researchers. In the end, only Bronies can explain Bronies. Most Bronies all have their own short version of the answer, but the short answers don't tell the whole story, and in many cases they're such familiar answers that they've become trite - usually something along the lines of, "well it's just a good show with good characters, and a good message!"
This project is meant to be an answer both in-depth and comprehensive, to prove once and for all that the Brony phenomenon isn't something that can be conveniently packaged and into a one-sentence statement and then dismissed.
This will be the first in a series of six discussions where together, we try to finally find the elusive answer to the question about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and its fan base that still perplexes so many: why DO people love this show so much? My ultimate goal is that no matter who you are, whether you're a Brony or not, I hope that watching this series will leave you with a new appreciation of just how deep the answer might go. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode I: Busy Having Fun

From where I stand You are home free The planets align so rare There's promise in the air And I'm guiding you
Through every turn I'll be near you I'll come anytime you call I'll catch you when you fall I'll be guiding you

"Someday at Christmas" Lyrics _____________________________________
Someday at Christmas men won't be boys Playing with bombs like kids play with toys One warm December our hearts will see A world where men are free
Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars When we have learned what Christmas is for When we have found what life's really worth There'll be peace on earth
Someday all our dreams will come to be Someday in a world where men are free Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmas we'll see a land With no hungry children, no empty hand One happy morning people will share Our world where people care
Someday at Christmas there'll be no tears All men are equal and no men have fears One shining moment, one prayer away From our world today ________________________________________
Miscellaneous Information:
The frame near the beginning of the PMV is a parody of a presentation given at the United Nations by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that Iran was closing in on getting a nuclear bomb. The seriousness of his warning was undercut by the silliness of the cartoon bomb diagram he used to make his presentation -- the Internet got a hold of it and there was a "caption" contest to see who could come up with the funniest joke caption for the image. The winner of the contest was chosen by Netanyahu himself (obviously he's a very good sport) and that's what I used in the video. It was not meant to be overly political, but it does fit the song lyrics.
The live action material was taken from Everfree Network footage of two of the recent Pony Conventions this year: Canterlot Gardens and Equestria L.A. -- find the full videos on EverFree Network's channel (formerly EverFreeRadio):
The track at the very end is called "Rockin' Christmas Remix" and is also from "A Creber Christmas".

Olden Pony'll eat me!Funny Brony Responses to Haters and Trolls (HD)Neal X2012-12-03 | ***Watching in HD Recommended*** "What can men do against such reckless hate?" "Ride out and meet them." ALL COMMENTS were taken from pony-related videos.
One of the things that first drew me to this fandom was the incredible positivity and creativity of the fans. Whenever I saw the inevitable hate or troll comments, I was always surprised by the cleverness and wit of the responses: people weren't attacking the messenger, they weren't responding in the same ugly way; rather they were using predictable responses from ignorant people to humorously spread our own message: that bronies are not sexual deviants, not hateful, not weird, not stupid, not ashamed, and above all, NOT GOING AWAY. :)
(I'm not going to say bronies are not autistic and not gay, because some of us are, and there's nothing wrong with that.)
As I eventually learned, a lot of bronies (especially the twenty-something males who drew the most attention) were forged in the fires of the 4Chan message boards. It's pretty hard to troll such people :)
So after seeing so many of these great comments I thought to myself, I should really start saving these, just because they're too good to be lost in the ether of the Internet but should be saved as testimony to the good-heartedness and intelligence of this fanbase. Recently I decided it was time to finally put them into a montage. Enjoy.
Sidenote: However, I will say that doing Google image searches for some of the graphics I used in this may have scarred me for life.

I was inspired to make this video after listening to Saturday Night Songs on EFR featuring Michelle Creber's cover of the song "I Hope You Dance", since it brought to mind for me all of the great dancing scenes in Friendship is Magic. The lyrics of the song just fit too perfectly with the show so I just couldn't pass up making this.

This is not only my first Pony video, it's my first video editing project period, as well as the first video I've ever uploaded to the Internet... (what has this show done to me!). What follows is a mini-essay of sorts containing my thoughts on the show:
1. Yes, My Little Pony is a children's cartoon supposedly only for little girls. 2. Yes the stories are simple, sometimes even cheesy. 3. So is it pathetic that adults and men in particular watch it in growing numbers? No. 4. What's really sad is that apparently scenes of characters being kind and compassionate and joyful to each other are only deemed fit to show to little girls. Perhaps it's no wonder then that the adult world is so full of all the things that have nothing to do with real happiness.
Whenever any of us watches TV, regardless of age, we are affected by what we are told, and especially by what we SEE on screen. If we see characters being violent and hateful, we absorb that. However the same thing works for love and compassion, though sadly it's far more rare to see it. MLP: FIM doesn't only TELL us about the value of compassion, it SHOWS us what compassion looks like, and that's why it's impossible not to feel happy after watching the show.
This video is a compilation of scenes in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic that show characters being genuinely affectionate to one another through physical gestures, and some are simply scenes where characters are happy together. The scenes are, with only one exception, taken from the show in the order they appear.
When you watch this, ask yourself: how often do you see this level of affection in "guy" or "adult" shows? And what does that say about us as a culture and what we're teaching young men? Everyone needs love and affection, not just little girls, and I think the growth of the male fandom speaks for itself about how MLP: FIM has fed that need.
If this video is any good, I can't really take any credit for it. Credit goes out to the creators of this show for reminding us that just because might be simple enough for a child to understand, doesn't make that idea any less powerful—or important. And credit goes out to the amazingly talented and creative members of the Brony community who have poured their time and energy into restoring my faith in humanity. Perhaps we really are on the cusp of living in a world where having a kind and compassionate heart is no longer ridiculed as weakness, but recognized as true strength -- perhaps the greatest of strengths. This is my way of saying thank you to the Brony Community. /] -------------------------------------------------------------------- Music:
