Why do Actresses Complain about Corsets? (and why we should believe them) Lina Piprek 2021-02-14 | I’m not asking anyone to stop promoting corsets (as a corset maker that would be an absurd thing to do), I just wanted to explain why an actress’s experience of wearing a corset might be different from yours. This doesn’t mean that corsets are evil, or that they should be painful, I just believe that the situation where you’re wearing one can have a big impact on comfort. (And if we could all stop assuming that professional costume makers don’t know what they’re doing that would be great)***Every film production is different. But they were also used to corsets, instead of jumping straight from leggings to wearing a corset full time. Corsets do also get more comfortable over time (just like bras!), and a brand new corset is never going to feel as comfy cozy as one you’ve been wearing regularly for years.“But they’re misinforming the public and giving corsets a bad name” – Yes. It’s a weird world we live in where your word is taken as absolute truth as soon as you have a following. The pattern is suitable for makers at all levels (though you may need to look up how to sew buttonholes and bias binding if you’re a total beginner). It’s available as either a gridded version or a tiled, printable PDF version, both with a full set of instructions and both available at the links above. As a New Year’s gift to everyone who has had a tough year, the listings have variable pricing; my recommended price is £10, but it’s available for £2 – just pay whatever you’re able.This project has been A Process. Though I’m pleased with the results, I’ve come to the realization that making digital patterns takes a lot of time (and that I vastly overestimate the speed at which I can work – anyone else?). I do like the idea of producing patterns to accompany some of my videos, but this won’t be “the new normal” going forward. Especially considering the frequency needed to grow on YouTube and especially if everyone expects patterns in a large range of sizes – something I know there has been a lot of outcry for recently. Project Announcement - Historical Halloween 2020 Lina Piprek 2020-10-15 | Hello friends! I thought I’d share a short video about my sewing plans for this month. Apologies that I didn’t get into tons of detail, neither about the outfit I’m making nor about the specific imagery that I’ve been researching. I needed to be pretty brief to fit this video into my schedule, but I’ll try to include more of both in future videos in this series.The book I’ve been referencing is “The Appearance of Witchcraft: Print and Visual Culture in Sixteenth-Century Europe” by Charles Zika. It’s incredibly interesting, but please be aware that it’s more of an academic read (lots of in-depth analysis of individual images), if that’s not your thing.I did think twice about sharing this after the recent disagreements in the historybounding community over the use of language and imagery associated with witches. While these have a much longer history than their current use, they do of course hold a great deal of meaning to some people today. I sincerely hope that no one feels I’m treading on concepts I ought to have left alone, but I do feel that our collective human history is there to be explored by everyone. It is particularly notable for how comprehensive it is (the company kept great records!), and for how willing its curators are to share the knowledge that comes with such a collection. Their silk thread in 36 thickness is my current favorite to use for flossing, and they’re the best value for silk embroidery thread that I’ve found. I use about 15m of thread to do a fairly elaborate flossing design on a whole corset, and their spools have 50m for the same cost that I was previously spending on 10m.devereyarns.co.ukP.S.I know my audio jumps up and down throughout the video. I did my best to fix it but as it turns out, placing your camera between yourself and your sewing (and continually moving your face closer and further away from it), is not the best way to get good audio! Perhaps I should do actual voiceovers rather than explain as I go, I'm working on it 😊
Piecing is Period - Sewing a Historical Bodice out of Scraps Lina Piprek 2020-07-11 | Using all my scraps of linen fabric (cabbage!) to sew a new bodice based on 16th century supportive bodice styles.Somehow I got sidetracked by the construction process and I never really talked about WHY I chose to make this bodice using only scraps, but the answer is really very simple: to use up (some of the) "useful" scraps that I've been hoarding for years, and because it's more environmentally friendly as well as accurate throughout history.I'll likely go into more detail about this in the future, but it's been a few years since I stopped buying "fast fashion" and I now try to sew clothes I need myself, alongside my more costume-y projects. Sewing a Shirt Based on The Great - One Day Make Lina Piprek 2020-06-29 | In which I sew a shirt inspired by Catherine’s casual wardrobe in “The Great” *kind of* in a day but actually in 12h 45m spread over 2 days. I hope you enjoy seeing the process and possibly the absolute disregard I treat deadlines with when I’m aware they’re not Real Deadlines. (And it would have taken even longer without lovely friends to help me make decisions so thanks! ❤️) This video is definitely more of a “follow along” type thing than a tutorial, but there WILL be a tutorial for this and several other projects in the future, stay tuned for updates.I used about 1.5m of cotton swiss dot to make my shirt.
