This project was going to be published sooner but I've stalled on sharing it. I've decided to share it now, after beginning my first year of college (studying Animation & Illustration BFA :]!! Yippee!!!). The work here is old, there's a lot of areas with room for growth, but it's still something dear to me. For context, I have an extensive Hollyleaf AU, who I've decided to rename to Hollymoon. There's a playlist of songs I've chosen to detail the story and hope to make animatics for all of them (...a very ambitious goal). Hollymoon has the power to receive prophecies from Starclan. When she's accused of being responsible for the death of a clanmate, Hollymoon escapes the trial to relinquish her power and escape to the tunnels, now named Holly. She learns about her family and develops friendships in the tunnels before returning to the clan for a new trial. There's a lot more plot threads and the story does continues, but I'd like to reveal the rest with future animatics.Below are the descriptions I've written at the time this was finished.----My project is an animatic of the beginning of a story I’ve been developing. I took the character, Hollyleaf, and made an alternate universe with different plot threads. The beginning focuses on themes of omens, alienation, and responsibility. “Hollow Moon” by The Crane Wives inspired my project.An animatic is a finalized version of a storyboard that better reflects what the final animation would look like. I chose to give color to my animatic to build atmosphere and gain a better idea of what the final animation could look like.I worked independently on my project because I had a specific vision for how the pacing and staging of the animatic would be. I was responsible for making my own concept art, storyboard, editing, and completing the animatic.I incorporated my After Effects knowledge to put together the scenes I animated in Clip Studio Paint. I also learned more about the animation production pipeline from our short film earlier in the year. Serpent and the Stars || Part 144 & 145, Credits Storyboard LettuceBettuce 2024-01-03 | Majority of participants and I have decided to move on from SATS and drop our parts. I wanted to share some of the animation work I did for the project. 0:07 *PART 144 & 145*144 was done over the course of many months, and it still isn't complete. That's okay with me. I'm happy with keeping it at the stage it is. I decided instead of lining the rough animation, I directly cleaned up the sketch (which meant erasing a lot of lines). The long timespan was due to my focus split across schoolwork, personal projects, and the challenge of the part itself. It is emotion focused and I wanted to do my best to convey Hollyleaf's feelings while still using subtly. The part isn't perfect, but I think the mistakes make it more personal to me.I learned from part 145 (the flowers) that there is a lot of theory that goes into draw and coloring flowers.Here is part 144 by itself: youtu.be/uYu4dAe0NqA0:56 *CREDITS STORYBOARD*I did my sections of the storyboard in June and July (2023). Leafpools Well - Inspired by The Crane Wives || SPEEDPAINT LettuceBettuce 2023-12-14 | This piece was inspired by the new single from The Crane Wives, "The Well". The color palette references the song's cover art and music video.I'm very happy I saw TCW perform live on November 5th, 2023! There, they showed previews for upcoming songs. "The Well" was one of them. Since they've now officially released the song, I wanted to make a piece in celebration. I thought the lyrics fit Leafpool, so I used some imagery that connects to her story.Leafpool is on snow, guarding her babies. There is water cascading around her as stars shine it in. The water was inspired by the moon pool and wells, so I put Leafpool at the "bottom". Leafpool has to hide her feelings and the truth whilst carrying the burden of Starclan's judgement (the spirits at the top), thus cowering. I thought it'd be a cool visual to have Leafpool's tabby stripes mimic a ribcage, but I decided to go for a more subtle approach to the skeleton imagery. After all, everyone has a skeleton in their closet (haha). Even though Leafpool is not directly involved in the fire scene, she still had a major influence on those events. This was the first MAP I've hosted and during its production, I've learned a lot about the management and development of projects. Everyone truly gave it their all with their parts and were awesome to work with.The artistry in Hades is truly inspiring and it felt fitting to pair it with characters who end up underground. This was a relaxing part to animate. In this part, the "salamander" is incubating in an egg. We zoom out to see the egg catch fire. I wanted to imply this guy is a dragon given the large bones surrounding the nest. I really enjoyed developing the concept and made this animatic for extra credit. As the player, you can choose between Sizzle or Spark for the salamander.The animatic depicts a boss fight you'd encounter in the Overstayed Winter biome. You fight a bear's dream projection.I made this animatic in ~2 days and experimented with a new process. Hollyfawn is a project that I deeply care about and I'm so happy to be able to animate her for this MAP.I like to interpret that paws are a key symbol of Holly's potential and choices. As an artist, I rely on my hands to craft my work. Hollyleaf uses her own paws to create flowers. She discovers hope of escape when a curious (and timid) spirit, Fallen Leaves, offers to be her guide. He has the power to glow, providing Hollyleaf with the light she needs to navigate the tunnels.This power isn’t unlimited. Fallen Leaves’ whiskers burn up the more he uses it. When the two get separated in the tunnels, Fallen Leaves uses up his whiskers in an attempt to find Hollyleaf. The drawings on the wall come to life, reflecting the spirit’s panic. Hollyleaf is more calm when lost, working gradually through the tunnels in search of her guide.Hollyleaf finds Fallen Leaves when he’s used up all his lights and fading away. Fallen Leaves comes to peace in his final moments now that he’s reunited with his friend. Perhaps they would’ve been able to escape together if Hollyleaf searched faster, or if Fallen leaves rationed his lights out more.“It’s a tragedy.”- Hermes, Hadestown--------------------The project was conceptualized on November 12th, 2021, when I was listening to "Doubt Comes In" during my Digital Media class. It's a song that makes me emotional each time. I've learned a lot from the MAPs I've been hosting and it felt appropriate to use Hollyleaf and Fallen Leaves for the narrative of Eurydice and Orpheus (... again). Although Eurydice is the one we lose in the original myth, I felt this version of the story worked better if it was Fallen Leaves who passed on. Pre-production started in June/July of 2022 and I'm grateful my friends were enthusiastic to help. A lot of changes happened to the story and art direction, but a theme that remained constant was love and light. Fallen Leaves inspires Hollyleaf to gain confidence and acts as a beacon of hope.It was a pleasure to work with all of the participants. I met a lot of artists and they truly gave the project their all.
