Hale helped create Mt Wilson, a telescope site in Southern California that sparked an astronomy boom in the area. Dr. Gerard Kuiper and Ewan Whittaker, two brilliant and sometimes eccentric lunar scientists, were thrust to the forefront of exploration when they were tasked with taking the first up-close photographs of the moon's surface and mapping the moon for the eventual Apollo 11.
With increasing pressure from the government and a string of technical issues, Kuiper and Whittaker operated on the cutting edge of planetary science, laying the groundwork for one of the greatest achievements ever made by humankind.
