This week we’ll be exploring a couple of methods in VCarve (Desktop and Pro) and Aspire for designing a wobble chess board. One method will focus on using Aspire to create the vectors and cropping a model to create the contours of the board. For the other method, we’ll delve into using VCarve or Aspire software to create the same contours, using different methods. In the process, I'll demonstrate “deconstructing” a file provided by Michael Mezalick in order to understand how he created the file. Over the years, I’ve been asked a lot of questions about YouTube – why I do it, how I do it, and how to get started. In this open Live Q&A, I'll do my best to answer your general YouTube questions. Please note that I am NOT a YouTube expert. There are many, many more people out there who know a LOT more than I do about YouTube, YouTube success, and content creation. I cannot tell you how to get 1 million subscribers or 10 million views on a video, and I’m not going to attempt to do so. What I WILL do is try to help you understand the basics, and help you get into a healthy mindset if you really want to get started creating and posting videos on YouTube.
So, join me Wednesday, September 20th at 5 pm Pacific Time, 8 pm Eastern Time for this Live YouTube Q&A, and get your questions answered!

In this video, I’ll introduce the subject of Tiling Toolpaths, using Vectric Aspire Version 11.5. I’ll first discuss what toolpaths actually is, and describe the reasons for tiling toolpaths. Then I’ll show you some things that need to be taken into consideration before tiling, such as mounting the material. I’ll then show you how I intend to mount my project, and discuss the complications that introduced to my overall design.
I’ll show you the entire toolpath tiling process, step by step, and discuss important considerations along the way. I’ll then wrap things up by showing you the finished project, and save the G-code for each toolpath. As usual, if you have any comments or questions about anything I covered in this video, please join me for the Live Q&A, or put ‘em in the comment section below.
On Sunday, June 25th, I’ll be hosting a LIVE Q&A session, where you can ask your questions pertaining to anything I’ve covered in this video. That Q&A starts at 3 pm Eastern time, Noon Pacific time. Hope to see you there!

Check out StreamYard: streamyard.com/pal/d/5708919750000640Vote in the Toolpath Tiling Poll On My Community TabMark Lindsay CNC2023-06-08 | I'm going to split the Toolpath Tiling series into 2 parts. Part 1 will be drawing the design, calculating the toolpaths, and saving the G-Code. Part 2 will be actually machining and finishing the project. The question is, should I release Part 1 as a recorded and edited video, with a normal Live Q&A later that same day? Or should I do the design work, calculate the toolpaths, and save G-Code during a live stream on a Sunday? This poll will run until Sunday, June 11th at Noon Pacific time, 3 pm Eastern time, and the results will be announced on that day's Live Q&A.
This week is an Open Live Q&A where I'll answer your general CNC or Vectric Software questions. We'll also have a discussion on some of the Program Options found in VCarve and Aspire software.

In this video, I’ll show you how I go about setting the Z zero position to the material surface and to the machine bed in a single file, using Vectric Aspire Version 11.5. Then I’ll show you one way of doing it in Vectric Aspire Version 10.0. First I’ll show you how I created the file in Version 11.5, using Sheets. One sheet with the Z zero position on the machine bed, and the other with it on the material surface. I’ll then show you how I calculated the toolpaths for each of the sheets. Then I’ll show you how I created the same files in Version 10.0, using 2 separate files.
I’ll show you the entire carving process, and discuss important considerations along the way. I’ll then wrap things up by showing you the finished stars, and give you my thoughts on when each Z zero position is warranted.
As usual, if you have any comments or questions about anything I covered in this video, please join me for the Live Q&A, or put ‘em in the comment section below.
On Sunday, April 23rd, I’ll be hosting a LIVE Q&A session, where you can ask your questions pertaining to anything I’ve covered in this video. That Q&A starts at 3 pm Eastern time, Noon Pacific time. Hope to see you there!

In this video, I’ll finally address a question I get quite often. That is, the difference between setting the Z zero position to the material surface and setting it to the machine bed. First I’ll show you the file I created in Vectric Aspire to 3D carve two barn stars – one with the Z zero position on the machine bed, and the other with it on the material surface. I’ll then briefly show you the toolpaths for each of the stars. Then I’ll show you how I carved each one of them out of a piece of material, and the issues I had along the way. Then I’ll tell you what my primary issue was, and how I corrected it.
Finally, I’ll summarize the entire process and discuss when each setup is appropriate, or not, as the case may be.

In this video, I’ll show you how I made two work positions on the spoilboard of my Avid CNC 4848 Pro CNC Router, then created fixture offsets in Mach4 for those positions. First I’ll show you the file I created in Vectric Aspire to drill dowel locations into the surface of the spoilboard. I’ll then show you how I set up and drilled those holes. Then I’ll show you how I used precision ground dowels in those holes to accurately mount a piece of material. And then I’ll show you how I created a G55 and a G56 Fixture Offset in Mach4 to be able to repeatably use those fixture locations. Finally, I’ll summarize the entire process and discuss why a person would want such a setup.

In this video, I’ll demonstrate and discuss manually setting X, Y, and Z zero my Avid 4848 Pro CNC Router.
First I’ll briefly touch on the Cartesian Coordinate System that all CNC equipment uses to operate. I’ll explain how it works in theory, and in practice. I'll then briefly explain how this relates to CNC in @vectric Aspire.
Out on the CNC router, I’ll demonstrate positioning the spindle, and setting the X Y datum position at the center of a piece of material. I’ll then set X Y zero in Mach4. I’ll then demonstrate using Incremental Jogging to set Z zero to the material surface. I’ll also demonstrate manually setting the X Y datum position to the bottom left corner, and discuss when NOT to set X and Y zero.
Finally, I’ll wrap up by briefly discussing touch plates.

Please remember that I am NOT a CNC expert, and I cannot help you troubleshoot your CNC router. Every CNC router, controller, and controller software is different. Your best option is to contact your CNC manufacturer’s Tech Support division, or look for a Support Forum or Support Community through their website. They are the people who know your machine best, while I would only be guessing.
