In September of 2013, Ubisoft Montréal received a massive 10 million dollar investment from the Québec government. Ubi would be far from the last local studio to receive financial support as Prime Minister Pauline Marois attempted to bolster Québec’s already flourishing video game industry. Video games weren’t the only thing on Marois’ mind though, as 20 days prior to making her announcement from Ubisoft's offices, she had been at the National Assembly to reveal something much more sinister: “La Charte”.
These conflicting initiatives led me (a Montréaler) to commit to a decade long boycott of all local Ubisoft games, including the famed Assassin’s Creed series. After finally breaking my streak though, I came to a realization about the nature of Montréal-based game studios; something unexpected and counterintuitive given the complexities of their locale. Why does Montréal, of all places, make the most “ethnic” video games?
Behind Dongo Adventure’s brokenness lies a well designed, complex and intentionally difficult 2D platformer. Why though are most reviewers unwilling to dig that deep to find it? Well, it might be because Dongo doesn’t speak English very well, and he’s not great at hiding it.
Join us as we explore such topics as the language barrier, the myth of comprehensibility, and unwarranted stereotyping, all under the guise of reviewing the Brazilian indie game “Dongo Adventure” for the Nintendo Switch.

What does being Greek and being raised in Montréal have to do with not being able to enjoy Hades, Supergiant’s critically acclaimed Greek mythology action roguelike game? Turns out, a lot. As game studios flaunt progressive commitments, should we be praising them for only delivering the bare-minimum in terms of diverse representation? Are American diversity standards enough for a global audience with different worldviews? And most importantly: why is nobody in Hades actually Greek?

Resident Evil 4 is a game that fits VR like a glove. This new immersive perspective and improved control brings to light details in Resi 4 that have always been there but until now couldn’t be accessed. Old restrictive mechanics are fully unlocked, hidden details of the levels are laid bare, and the sense of visceral realism and panic can circumvent your familiarity with the game, making it feel like a fresh new experience. All that said though, I can’t recommend it to just anyone. Let me explain…

Sniper Elite VR just needed to do 2 things to be decent: be a good Sniper Elite game, and be a good VR game. Unfortunately it did neither. It omits the sandbox-style tactical stealth action that the series is known for, and it fails to pull off even the most basic requirements of a VR FPS game. Sniper Elite 4 is game that can stand toe to toe with the likes of Metal Gear Solid V and Hitman, but its VR adaptation lacks that same quality. There are better Sniper Elite games to play than this, and there are also better VR games to play than this. Here’s why.

“Bury Me My Love” is a mobile game that firmly plants you in the role of a refugee during the European migrant crisis. Using skeuomorphism and a diegetic user-interface, it allows the player to experience unfamiliar situations and struggles through a familiar frame. Paired with a real-time mode, the game reserves a portion of your mental bandwidth even when you’re not playing it. BMML asks you to reconsider your privilege by equipping you with tools and apps you’re already used to using, but asking to solve much more pressing problems with them and develop empathy for those whose reality this fiction is based on.

Virtual Reality is being used as a training and learning platform across various industries. In this video we explore its applications in the form of military and police combat simulators. People’s skills can be transported from the real world to the virtual and vice versa. What implications does this have then for VR as as an entertainment platform? The Resident Evil series has strayed further from the “survival horror” genre with each new installment. Will Resident Evil 8: Village finally be a return-to-form, will it stick to its themes as a simple vampire horror story, or will it devolve into some grandiose plot that ultimately ends on a boat?
Does this even matter though when an alternative game like Phasmophobia can exist to fill its niche? Phasmophobia is an incredible horror experience that makes use of advanced artificial intelligence techniques like natural-language-processing to deliver a compelling and personalized AI controlled ghost experience. If you too are met with disillusion from RE8, I suggest giving Phasmophobia a try!

What does an analysis of TLOU2's context and standing as a sequel have to do with one about BFBB Rehydrated? Turns out, everything!
An exploration of two games which are, in my opinion, antitheses to each other in terms of what they needed to accomplish as far as being followups to two critically acclaimed original games. TLOU2 is a game that needed to be made; it proves that the original was worth revisiting and its execution of its untapped potential is frankly astounding. Rehydrated on the other hand, by its nature as an exact remake, fails to truly honor the title it stemmed from and sets itself up for failures by way of missed technical omissions that break the design rules of the original. Also, it looks kinda bad.
Stop asking me to review SpongeBob games. I'll make another SpongeBob review when they make TLOU3 lol.

My girlfriend and I sit down to discuss the process by which she's become acclimated to modern gaming over the course of the 3 years we've lived together. We cover games as she's observed, ignored, and played them. Most importantly, we discuss our playthroughs of Resident Evils 5 and 6 and how they helped her handle the stresses today's games require from players.
Key also, we talk about the recent trend of “90’s Kids” couples experiencing the same sorts of gaming literacy problems upon beginning to live together. We discuss generational and systemic gender issues which may be the cause of these problems.

The video is structured in three parts: First, we aim to legitimize games. Second, gaming culture is explained, benefits of the hobby are explored, and millennial hobbies are relativized by comparing them to gen x hobbies. Third, assuming the viewer is now motivated to effect change, some tips and ideas are provided.
