Scud Race 8 Player Network (on 1 controller) Beginner Day

MrThunderwing 2024-10-11 | I was having a play around with Supermodel's networking ability a few weekends ago and got it running in a single PC 8 player network (although, the 8 games shudder down to about 15fps running in unison on my ancient PC like that). I've sped the video back up to the right speed here and added the attract mode music back in. All 8 players are tied into one single pad, I'm concentrating on mainly controlling the green and yellow McLaren (middle right).

Jurassic Park Arcade (Played at Funland Arcade)

MrThunderwing 2024-10-10 | Played at Funland arcade in London. This is actually the first time I've ever played one of these cabinets, although I have seen one out in the wild before.

The controls for player 1 weren't actually working properly, the crosshairs wouldn't go to the top of the screen. I mentioned this to the staff who were working there and they very kindly gave me another free go from the player 2 side (this was working, but the crosshairs were a little bit jittery)

Point Blank X (Arcade Version Played on PC with launcher)

MrThunderwing 2024-09-28 | Point Blank, known as Gun Bullet (ガンバレット, Gan Baretto), or Gunvari (ガンバリ, Ganbari) in Japan, is a series of light gun shooter games developed by Namco.

Point Blank X is the last major release in the classic comedy lightgun series (as of the time of writing, at least) and was initially released in arcades back in 2016. It features a bunch of remixed levels from previous games in the series, with a modern HD art style. This is a cracked version of it playable on PC I found online. Awesome.

My mate and I used to both own GunCon1s and PS1s and it was great fun taking my GunCon over to his house back in the day and playing his copy of Point Blank in 2P versus mode. I don't know why I never bought the game myself, I absolutely loved it. I did buy Ghoul Panic, which felt like a 3D polygon continuation of the series by Namco. I loved GP, but for reason it never clicked with Matt.

Parking Garage Rally (Sega Saturn Style Racer)

MrThunderwing 2024-09-22 | I got sent a STEAM key to try out this game about a month ago, but because I've been a bit pre-occupied with a few other real life things going on, I only got around to trying it out for the first time yesterday morning (which was actually a day after it got publicly released).

I always appreciate any Indie devs who take the time to contact me about their games, but, unfortunately, Parking Garage Rally wasn't really my particular cup of tea.

I wasn't really into this style of gameplay - lots and lots of tight 90 degree bends on very enclosed and samey looking tracks. I'm also not really a fan of stuff that's intentionally trying to look like a 32 bit console game (as much as I loved my Saturn and later PS1, I couldn't wait for 3D graphics to be more like the actual arcade titles that were around at the time, like the far superior looking Model 2 and Model 3 games) but, I do appreciate the work that's gone into this to give it that particular old school Sega Saturn look (right down to the lack of transparency effects and the use of dithering to simulate them). Controls felt tight and the drift mechanic felt intuitive.

But it seems to be getting some very positive reviews on STEAM, so I think it's really just a 'me' thing - I think I probably wasn't the right target audience for it. I prefer my arcade racers to be less like an 8-bit Mario Kart and more like an Outrun 2, Daytona USA or Sega Rally. But, hey, maybe this is the sort of thing that some of youse might enjoy, so I thought an upload was warranted at the very least! Thanks to Walaber Entertainment for sending me the STEAM key.

Streetfighter 2: Special Champion Edition (Megadrive Monday Challenge)

MrThunderwing 2024-09-18 | Yeah, I know it's not Monday - the challenge starts then and goes on all week. This is my contribution to @TheRetroMartin 's New #MegaDriveChallenge: Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition:

It's a High score challenge:
Use any character
Default enemy difficulty (I accidentally went one star higher. Derp)
Hyper speed any setting you like (I went Champion Edition default rather than Turbo)
Only 1 continue allowed
Original hardware or emulation/collection (I used Kega Fusion emulator on my PC)
No rewinds or save states

I totally cocked-up the barrel bashing bonus stage, that was definitely points down the toilet. I got several perfects, only used one continue (bloody Vega!), managed to beat Bison and complete the game, but only just scraped through one of the Bison rounds. I'm pretty rusty at the game these days, but the more I played, the easier the Dragon Punches started getting in the later rounds.

I got seventh on the overall leaderboard.

This was absolutely my favourite ever Megadrive game back in the day BTW. The level of hype that I built up for it in my brain before it's release was insane (particularly as it looked like, initially, Nintendo had exclusivity of the game for the SNES when the secured the rights to The World Warrior), which was only heightened by the awesome coverage the game got in UK gaming like Mean Machines Sega. Other than a few grainy voice samples and some missing frames of animation, this is an absolutely outstandingly close port of the arcade original. Gameplay is absolutely spot-on!

Transformers: Shadows Rising (Sega RingEdge 2 Arcade version on PC) - Full Playthrough

MrThunderwing 2024-09-17 | Transformers Shadows Rising is an arcade gun game released by Sega. Developed by Sega Shanghai Studio and Sega Amusements International, it is the successor to 2013's Transformers Human Alliance. And here it is being played on my PC courtesy of an arcade crack I found online (easy to find using Google). This is a standalone arcade launcher, so no need for Teknoparrot or anything like that (it is playable in TP, but I couldn't get that version to work). The default control system seems to launch with both the player 1 and 2 controls linked to one input.

Gameplay is largely identical to that of Human Alliance, i.e. it's a rail shooter. The Pacific Ocean, Wales and East China stages can be played in any order before moving on to the final stage, The Moon.

I figured out the gear stick QTE event stuff was linked in to the up/down keys on the keyboard, but getting them to work consistently was really hit and miss.

"TRANSFORMERS Shadows Rising is the long-awaited follow up to the smash hit licensed video game TRANSFORMERS Human Alliance. In TRANSFORMERS Shadows Rising, players are partnered with three movie's stars, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Sideswipe to stop evil Megatron's plans."

I've never been the biggest fan of the Bayverse Transformers designs; so many of the characters just look indistinguishable from each other and this feels particularly so here. The boss battles in this one seemed to lack some of the character of the one's from the first game against the likes of Starscream and Soundwave. Fake Shockwave, evil Bumblebee and evil Optimus felt a bit meh, although the Grimlock one was fun (and the fact it was set in Wales of all places was amusing. If that boss battle takes place in Cardiff, that's only about an hour's drive away from where I live).

Astro Bot: Rescue Mission - Final Boss (PSVR)

The very last boss in this absolutely fantastic game. Again, this guy was a bit trickier than some of the others, probably about on a par with the shark boss that just preceded him.

Terminator Salvation (Raw Thrills) Playthrough (Teknoparrot)

MrThunderwing 2024-08-15 | It'd been a very long time since I last checked in with what's new in Teknoparrot. Quite a bit it seems! Terminator Salvation (as well as quite a few other games) has finally come off the Patreon/Subcription only list. Excellent! I'm a huge Terminator fan (well, the first 2 films at any rate).

This game is a lot fun, pleasantly surprising considering the film it's based on was shite. Mowing down Terminators is something I could spend all day doing. It's really quite hard in places, the enemies give you very little reaction time before an attack (especially the annoying robo snake things). This is not a complete playthrough though, I unfortunately had to cut it short on the 6th level, for the simple reason I was absolutely busting for a piss - I'd captured a few other game before this and had drunk a huge amount of coffee and didn't think to have a 'comfort break' before starting this playthrough.

As I got to the end of the 6th stage I legged it to the bog hoping the cutscene would go on long enough to allow adequate peeing time and getting back before I ran out of life and the timer had counted down, but I'd left it so long the piss felt never ending. I just missed the cut-off for the timer as I ran back to try and credit up again. Oh well...

Aliens Armageddon (Raw Thrills) Complete Playthrough (Teknoparrot)

MrThunderwing 2024-08-14 | It'd been a very long time since I last checked in with what's new in Teknoparrot. Quite a bit it seems! Aliens Armageddon (as well as quite a few other games) has finally come off the Patreon/Subcription only list. Excellent! Excellent timing as well, what with the new Alien: Romulus film imminently hitting cinemas.

The game has got some crazy long load times, probably do with fact It's running on hardware it was never intended for, and I've just uploaded the video capture directly without editing, so I'm going to add chapters to this, so you can just skip the load screens.

Top Racer - Coleco Tabletop (Mini Review)

MrThunderwing 2024-08-11 | I picked up a Top Racer Coleco Tabletop last week (I loves me some miniature racer action). I actually bought it of some on eBay from the USA. Here's a mini review from the little bit I've played so far.

I forgot to mention in the video - It comes with a micro USB to USB A cable. As I also mention in the video - I've no idea if I plug this into the mains over here whether the voltage difference between the UK and the USA would fry it and whether it would really need a stepdown transformer. i'm just powering it with AA batteries at the moment.

Aero GPX (Steam Demo)

MrThunderwing 2024-08-07 | A quick playthrough on the Steam demo of Aero GPX - a full on spiritual sequel to F-Zero GX on the Gamecube and F-Zero X on the N64.

I liked what I saw here! It definitely feels a bit more F-Zero X than GX like here with the rather sparsely detailed tracks, but for an indie title that (I believe) is just being handled by a 3 man team, this is impressive stuff.

Streets of Kamurocho

MrThunderwing 2024-07-20 | Streets of Kamurocho is a mashup between Streets of Rage 2 and the Yakuza series, made available for a limited time on 17 October, 2020 through the Steam store to commemorate Sega's 60 years, although it's since been removed from there.

The game features only a single stage, based on the first level from Streets of Rage 2, with the same enemies but with Yakuza makeovers. Once the level is concluded the game loops at a harder difficulty, with the game ending once the player runs out of lives.

Players can choose between Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima initially, with Ichiban Kasuga appearing as an unlockable character. However, all three characters play the same, with their moveset being based on Axel Stone's, down to recycling the same voice clips (the same applies for enemies).

F-Zero GX - Beta All Cup (Story Mode Mission 6)

MrThunderwing 2024-07-17 | The All Cup version of Story Mode Chapter 6 in F-Zero GX.

The All Cup is something you can access in F-Zero GX with Gecko/Action Replay codes. This allows you to play on the Story Mode only tracks in Practice and Time attack as if they were just regular tracks, allowing you to add in extra CPU opponents and set the number of laps and also opening up your selection of ships to beyond just being the Blue Falcon. Awesome! You also get a snazzy little mini-map on the course selection screen. It also opens up a whole load of weird beta tracks, some of which are not exactly playable.

The music for this stage is absolutely bangin'!

This is being played on 🐬 Dolphin Emulator (v4 - I get better performance in the old version than v5)

Outrun Deluxe Arcade Cabinet at Four Quarters Elephant and Castle (Left Route)

MrThunderwing 2024-06-30 | I paid a visit to Laaaaahndaaaan earlier in the week, specifically to engage in a bit of retail therapy (there was a Robosen Transformers pop up event at Harrods I wanted to see) and to check out a couple of arcades whilst I was up there.

One of these was the arcade bar Four Quarters Elephant and Castle specifically because I'd heard they had one of these bad boys there! An Outrun Deluxe moving mechanical cabinet. I haven't played on one of these since the late 1980's. I haven't so much as even played on an Outrun stand-up cabinet in gawd knows how long, so this was a real treat to play! And, oh man, this was so much fun!

There was also an Outrun 2 SP twin cabinet right next to it, which was sadly out of action (although it was actually receiving a bit of TLC whilst I was there, so hopefully they'll get it back up and running again soon). Fortunately though, I've actually quite recently(ish) encountered a 4 player Outrun 2 SP setup in my home city:

Daytona USA (1st place on Advanced Course on real arcade cabinet!) at Funland Arcade

MrThunderwing 2024-06-28 | I paid a visit to Laaaaahndaaaan earlier in the week, specifically to engage in a bit of retail therapy (there was a Robosen Transformers pop up event at Harrods I wanted to see) and to check out a couple of arcades whilst I was up there.

One of these was Funland Arcade, located in the Brunswick shopping centre in London, mainly because I knew they had a twin Daytona cabinet there. In recent years, I've found an upright Daytona cabinet in an arcade bar near me, that had knackered steering and a Twin Sega Racing Classics cabinet at a bowling alley, that had really stiff gears, but this is the first proper Daytona sit-down cabinet I've seen in probably about 25 years.

And using this cabinet, I finally managed to get a 1st place on the Advanced course, Dinosaur Canyon, using real arcade hardware. The steering was behaving as it was supposed to here and the gears felt fine, but unfortunately there was no force feedback, and the CRTs had been swapped out for what looked like incorrect aspect ration 16:9 LCD monitors (although, TBH, I stopped noticing that after a few goes).

Anyway, very pleased with this result! Worth the trip to London just for this, but those of you who follow me on Twitter, will know I found something just as awesome, if not maybe even better, in the next arcade bar I went to after this... A video upload on that will be incoming soon!

G.I. Joe Wrath of Cobra (Demo)

As a bit of a fair weather Joe fan (mainly through their association with the Transformers), I've been keeping half an eye on how this has been shaping up. I hadn't realised though that a demo's been out for awhile on Steam, so let's give it a whirl.

This is a 2 level demo, with a choice of 3 playable Joes; Snake Eyes, Scarlett or Duke (I'm guessing there's going to be some more unlockable characters along the way). I love the aesthetic choice here to do this game in the style of a 2D retro style side scrolling beat-em-up (I wish Sega had stuck with that for their new Golden Axe and Streets of Rage games, rather than going 3D). I absolutely loved Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge.

This is fun and exactly what I wanted in a game of this type. I was basically button mashing my way through it, so I'm not sure if there are any more moves or combos you can do (I couldn't see any info on extra moves in the options). The levels feels a bit basic and bare left to right at the moment, would be good if they had a bit more added to them to fancy them up a tad. The music is great, the pixel art on the characters is great.

The cabinet sound was very, very quiet for some reason, all you can really hear in the video is what sounds like a nearby Puzzle Bobble machine popping bubbles, so I added some royalty free Eurobeat for that true Initial D maximum cheesefest factor. Some of is actually from the game I thiiink.

Sega Le Mans 24 - Secret Sonic Car (played with additional live FFB wheel cam)

MrThunderwing 2024-06-08 | Some gameplay on Sega Le Mans 24 played in Supermodel using the secret Sonic Car played with my DFGT wheel with the game ROM modified to have FFB working, with an additional live wheel cam recording it.

Alternate liveries for the cars can be accessed by holding down the 'VR1' and 'Start' button at the car selection screen before making your choice with the gas pedal.

Bonus Car Codes:

Highlight the Nismo R33, and hold START, LEFT, BRAKE, and VR BUTTONS 1+3, then hit ACCELERATE.

Porsche 917K
This car can be unlocked using the same procedure to unlock Sonic, but this time, hold down the V.R. 1+2 buttons instead of V.R. 1+3.

Sadly, as mentioned in the video, the steering isn't right on this cabinet, just a small turn left of the wheel made the car do a really sharp left turn (you can see this where the smoke keeps coming off the tires every time I just try and straighten the car up - it feels overly sensitive, like it does if you try playing Daytona USA on Model 2 emulator with a pad rather than a wheel).

Scud Race - 8 Player Panoramic Attract Mode

MrThunderwing 2024-05-24 | I was having a play around with Supermodel's networking ability a few weekends ago and got it running in a single PC 8 player network (although, the 8 games shudder down to about 15fps running in unison on my ancient PC like that). I've sped the video back up to the right speed here and added the attract mode music back in.

Scud Race (Real Arcade Cabinet) Beginner Day

MrThunderwing 2024-05-11 | I paid a visit to Playback Arcade in my home city of Bristol recently. The main reason I wanted to go there was after finding out they had a #ScudRace cabinet, a game I've not played on real hardware in well over 20 years. Unfortunately though, I realised once I started playing it, the pedals were playing up and the brake kept coming on on its own intermittently.

If the location looks familiar, it's because it's the site of the old History of Video Games exhibition/retro arcade that I've visited a few times before.

Point Blank 2 - Versus Gameplay on Real Arcade Cabinet

MrThunderwing 2024-04-21 | A 2 Player versus game on a real Point Blank 2 Cabinet - Me versus "Dead Eye" Millz. This was recorded at #NQ64 arcade bar in Bristol.

We were both doing pretty badly at this. Neil at least had the excuse of having had a few beers beforehand, whereas I was stone cold sober - my game does get better towards the last two challenges though. It was pretty hot, loud and neon light-tastic in here and when the challenge came up where you had to shoot the targets in numerical order or something, I literally did not have a clue what I was doing.

House of the Dead - POV gameplay on real arcade cabinet (1st level)

MrThunderwing 2024-04-13 | A run through the first level on a real House of the Dead arcade cabinet (located at Playback Arcade in my home city of Bristol). I've been experimenting with a little camera that clips on to my glasses for some POV style gameplay. I had it angled a bit too low here, so the top of the screen gets cut off sometimes. I did another playthrough of the first level again after this with the camera in a better position, but for some bizarre reason the first level boss was giving me a really hard time in that go. I only died on it once here, in the other game, I went through about 3 whole continues trying to take the mother-chuffer down. Annoying!

Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition (Sega Saturn) - Retro Review Mini

Vengeful Guardian Moonrider (PS4) 1st three missions

MrThunderwing 2024-03-27 | Picked this up from the PSN awhile back. This is literally my first time playing it - I've edited the gameplay video to get rid of all the goes where I died a lot, just to make it more interesting. This feels a bit like Shinobi 3 on the Megadrive to me, with some added Metroid. I'm mostly liking it... There's a few aspects of the AI enemies I'm finding a tiny bit irritating...

"Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is a side-scrolling action platformer that channels the golden age of classic 16-bit action games in a full-throttle quest for revenge. Created to defend a totalitarian state, the Moonrider rejects its programming and now seeks vengeance on its creators."

I'm loving the Psytrance BGMs in this - glad they didn't try and make it sound like chiptune music or something stupid like that.

Sega Le Mans 24 - Retro Review

Alternate liveries for the cars can be accessed by holding down the 'VR1' and 'Start' button at the car selection screen before making your choice with the gas pedal.

Highlight the Nismo R33, and hold START, LEFT, BRAKE, and VR BUTTONS 1+3, then hit ACCELERATE.

This car can be unlocked using the same procedure to unlock Sonic, but this time, hold down the V.R. 1+2 buttons instead of V.R. 1+3.

Daytona USA (PS3 8P Online game) Dinosaur Canyon Mirrored

Quite a few games I did badly in, a few I did pretty well, so I'm obviously going to be cherry picking my best games for uploads.

For some annoying reason, I was really struggling to get the rocket start to work. I literally only managed it about 3 times in about 2 hours worth of games. The correct timing for when you take your foot off the brake on the 'GO' seems to have just evaporated from my brain...

Outrun 2 - Daytona USA 2 tracks (JPN Xbox - Component cable video capture)

MrThunderwing 2024-03-03 | Here's some Outrun 2 (Japanese Version) being played on the OG Xbox - Bonus Stage 2 AKA the Challenge Course from Daytona USA 2: Power Edition (the JPN version is more accurate to the actual arcade version of Daytona USA 2 than the version of these bonus stages we got in the West - read on below for more info).

I picked up a component cable adapter for my Elgato HD video capture device awhile back so I could get some far better quality 480p video capture of the Japanese bonus stages in Outrun 2 running on my softmodded original Xbox, rather than the incredibly shitty composite video device I'd been using up until then.

I've already uploaded some Outrun 2 videos a while back I recorded in this superior manner, this video here is actually a slightly earlier experiment one, where I was using OBS to record, the video capture with the device (easier to set-up, less likely to screw the recording up) instead of the proprietary Elgato software (takes ages to get going, more prone to corrupting the video and making it unusable, but can do higher quality recordings). Predictably, the OBS captured video quality didn't come out as good, but it was still a decent run on the stage, so I thought, eh, worth an upload at some point in the future...

The Japanese version of Outrun 2 on the Xbox is more accurate to the arcade original version of Daytona USA 2: Power Edition's Challenge course. There are some significant differences between this version and the western version.

The game starts on the right section of the track in the Japanese game. In the Western one it starts further back than Daytona USA 2 did. Starting further back on the track is less accurate to the arcade version, but it does make it easier to tackle the first proper corner you get to, because in the JPN version you don't have enough run up to get up to speed to initiate a proper full speed gear drift if you're using manual.

The bunki is covered over as you move from the first part (Joypolis 2020 Amusement Park - advanced) to the second part (Virtua City expert), like in the arcade version of Daytona USA 2. In the western game is just looks like a regular Outrun 2 bunki. This is a big, big improvement.

You come out of the bunki in the right area in the JPN version (which actually makes it much harder), than you did in the western game. The western game brings you out into a slightly different, earlier part of Virtua city, which is a little easier to navigate... this actually means that although the JPN version is more arcade accurate, you do actually get more bang for your buck as far as the Daytona 2 expert stage goes in the western game, including the big U turn at the end of it and the Grand Central Station.

Daytona USA 2: Power Edition - 2 Player Supermodel Network Game with 3rd Screen Relay Cam v2

MrThunderwing 2024-03-02 | This is a 2 Player Supermodel Network Game with me and my mate Neil playing on my TV in 2 windowed versions of Supermodel (at an upscaled 960x720 each on my 37 inch screen) and a 2nd monitor also linked into the network as a a race relay live cam. All 3 of these are running on a Single PC. Rather than recording the desktop display with video capture software like I have in the past for multiplayer games like this, I decided to record both screens with my camera externally, meaning you'll also pick up any bants/chats we're having in-game.

Riptide GP: Renegade - Sky Mines (Android Phone)

MrThunderwing 2024-02-13 | Vector Unit's (the guys who did Hydro Thunder Hurricane), awesome futuristic jet ski racer being played on my mobile phone. The Riptide GP series really does feel like a sort of spiritual pseudo-sequel to the Hydro Thunder games. The phone here capture doesn't really do justice to the frame rate (the max the Android capture does is 30fps, to my eye the game looks 60fps)

Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge - 3 Screen 2 PC Network (Attract Mode)

MrThunderwing 2024-02-11 | This is a 2 PC LAN going between my desktop PC (using my old monitor setup from awhile back) and my Barcade (which I, not that long ago, fitted with a old GPU I had lying around, which bumped up its ability to play 3D games - which it couldn't really do before with the on-board graphics). It's still ancient PC tech inside it and the GPU itself is old, so I need to run Supermodel using the legacy 3D to get it working at what I thiiink feels like full speed, rather than the new 3D renderer. My desktop PC is running 2 instances of Supermodel, both outputting on different monitors.

My desktop PC can normally handle multiple instances of Supermodel OK. Together they are forming a 2 PC, 3 Emulator network. Oddly though, although both machines can run the game full speed in single player (and my desktop can normally do 2 instances in a single PC network full speed) when the 2 machines are linked, I get a bit of stuttering slowdown at times (but not all the time).

The Japanese version of Outrun 2 on the Xbox is a lot more accurate to the arcade original version of Scud Race. There are some significant differences between this version and the western version.

□ The sailing ship from Scud Race's 'Beginner Day' stage was missing in the Western versions. It's been added back in here

□ You've now got planes flying overhead in the 'Beginner Night ' stage part of the course, like in the arcade version of Scud Race. The planes on the ground have also been given a new lick of paint and are multi-coloured rather than the plain white ones in the EU and US versions of Outrun 2. There's also a plane on the ground on the second to last corner, the right-hand turn, that's also not in the Western versions.

□ The torches, in the 'Advanced Stage' where you go through the tunnel with the big U turn, are now properly lit, unlike the Western version. There's also a bit as you leave that stage area that has a wall with a big hole in it the Western versions. In the Japanese version there's a big idol head type thing, like in the actual Scud Race track.
