THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Riven: When Remake Becomes ReinventionVZedshows2024-09-21 | Once again, Cyan hits me with another reason to think about the Myst series. Hey, I'm not complaining. The Riven Remake was more like a total reinvention, a chance to experience this story and world almost for the first time again. How often do we get that chance? How does it work out? How does it serve it's initial purpose? There's a lot to think on here,

Firmament is an interesting game, not only on it's own but also in the deeper context of Cyan's other games. Long story short, I'm talking about atmospheric puzzle games again, surprising no one.

5 Favourite Games 2021 Ed. youtu.be/WtyExRgmE4EThe Bounce-Off - Why Dont I Like This?VZedshows2022-11-19 | I found myself with some downtime recently and so I got the bright idea to play some games that didn't work for me at first, put another way, I went back to some games I "bounced off" of. Hyper Light Drifter, Prey (2017) and Hollow Knight are all games that I respect but couldn't break my way into for some pretty arbitrary reasons and so I thought I would see if these challenges could be overcome. Revisiting each of these games was interesting and provided some new angles for how to consider the way I enjoy things in the past, present and future...

Exploring Resident Evil After Village: A Brief Retrospective youtu.be/tc5R3qXkoUkHow Tunic Goes Beyond NostalgiaVZedshows2022-08-20 | Tunic is the latest game to make my brain go "oh... huh... that's really cool" and so naturally I started writing about it. Eventually the game became a very interesting examination of not just how nostalgic appeal works but how it CAN work, where it can go and what it accomplishes along the way. Tunic is possibly one of the most powerful singular gaming experiences I've had even if the game itself is a pretty light 15 hour adventure in of itself. I suggest this game to anyone even half interested and this video (while spoiling basically everything) explains why.

After calling it my game of the year for 2021 I figured I had to talk through this game I'm stuck with in my mind now. I love a lot of what this game has to say about games and the way we interact with them. It puts so many of the unspoken angles of "gaming" into words and I wanted to try and outline how those ideas hit me, in all the layers and concepts it explores. I hope you enjoy... as much as I... enjoyed... putting this together !

The Mandatory Death in Outer Wilds youtu.be/Y7dUk7Wi-BA5 Favourite Games 2021 editionVZedshows2022-01-22 | 2021 was another year of playing a whole bunch of games, but utterly failing to get to the games that actually came out IN 2021. It's a departure for the series, thematically and aesthetically for sure, but amazingly Resident Evil: Village did not disappoint (me) and it's a game that reflects and refines the rest of the series for me in interesting ways I hadn't expected but am quite excited to follow up. This video is a kind of retrospective-lite as I explore what it is about the wider Resident Evil series that made Village so interesting to me and why I'm so excited about it's future.

By the end, though, a curious inclusion in the game's wider construction had fully pulled me into the experience and over time guided me through my own little adventure in examining the game on my own level removed from the story it tells and characters it represents. This video has been a long time coming. I've been thinking about ever since 2019 when i first played the game, and well... it's ballooned into what you see now. It's a game that has worked it's way into my brain like few games before it have. It reached all the way back to the same places i went when i played Myst and Riven all those years back and brought into focus deeper understandings about those games for me even now. This video is the end of my puzzle game series (so far) and i've had so much fun working on this, almost sad to see it go. Enjoy!

In light of my talking about Myst for almost an hour a few months back I decided to follow it up with a discussion of how it and its sequel, Riven differ from each other in various ways. The two have always been intrinsically linked to each other in story and play though there is so much that sets them apart I say they are drastically different. It's the details and the design that make them what they are so I thought I should talk about the rift that joins the two games together in this little series on first person puzzle games I seem to be doing.

Myst is a game that is, very likely, within the first 15 games i ever played in my life. It has been a constant in my life ever since i first played the game in the early 90's. It is a game with a reputation that precedes it as obtuse, difficult, and "just, really not my thing". It is EXACTLY my thing, however and i figured a perfect opportunity to bring back the For Better or Worse format of my videos. Let me explain to you why i think this game is great.

It has been a long while since i've worked on anything for this channel. I've struggled with the desire to get back to it weighed against real stuff but throughout all of that Minecraft has been a constant for me. It was a hard task, as these games have so much amazing music to choose from but somehow i managed to pick the ten that i think are my favourite.
Music Selections Riding the Elevator for 3 Minutes by Mark Barron All other Selections taken from the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack by David Wise, Eveline Fischer and Robin Beanland, Donkey Kong Country 2 soundtrack by David Wise, and Donkey Kong Country 3 soundtrack by Eveline Fischer and David Wise

Banjo-Tooie youtu.be/RgjJlShXLyUGoldenEye 007 - VZedshowsVZedshows2017-03-04 | GoldenEye 007 was the defacto multiplayer game from my childhood, and one of the most remembered Rareware titles. It single handedly mastered multiplayer on the Nintendo 64 and, in my opinion, outshone Mario Kart 64. It has a great soundtrack and fun missions, but does it hold up today? Lots of people say no, but that won't stop me. I gotta see how this goes.
Music Selections:
Riding the Elevator for 3 Minutes by Mark Barron The Sleepy Behemoth by Mark Barron Ghost Town from Vigilante 8 soundtrack by Howard Drossin All other selections from GoldenEye 007 original sountrack by Grant Kirkhope and Graeme Norgate.

The Beginner's Guide (Spoilers) youtu.be/-_xtSMjZ3R4Jet Force Gemini - VZedshowsVZedshows2017-02-07 | Jet Force Gemini is a Rareware title for the Nintendo 64 that i have missed all these years up until now. and now that it's FebuRAREy again it's high time i finally fired this title up. Perhaps it is a hidden favourite that has been biding it's time and i'm gonna forget all about Resident Evil 4 and my other favourite games, or perhaps everybody who warned me about controls and such were on to something. WHO KNOWS??!?!?!?
A Quick Thing on The Beginner's Guide (Spoiler Free) youtu.be/e-8pB2CS98gVZeds Top 10 Games of the Year Round Up - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-12-23 | I didn't get to play all the games in 2016, but i played some. Roughly ten of them. Figured i should dash off a quick round up of my favourites before i break for the holidays.
My Top 5 Zelda Dungeons youtu.be/ipPPo0YSMCUThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Magic Moments - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-12-01 | The Legend of Zelda is a timeless classic, rich in tradition and loved by millions. It's familiar formula has carried fans through nearly 3 decades of games, and they're still going strong. The Wind Waker proved itself to be a controversial entry into the series with it's cartoony graphics and animation and great focus on the wider world rather than just be another string of dungeons. It made some interesting choices in that regard, and in this video I am to look at one of them in closer detail.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!INSIDE - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-10-31 | INSIDE is Playdead games' follow up to their 2010 smash hit LIMBO. A Mechanical sequel of sorts, INSIDE explores new themes and ideas surrounding society, duty, and responsibility in the face of a changing world. It's a disturbing game to say the least, but i feel as though the game managed to place the weight of it's progression back on me, the player. I found INSIDE to be a powerful gaming experience that spoke to my sensibilities, and even if it takes a very specific direction towards the end, the themes and ideas implied in the first half of the game exemplify some real power which is the topic of today's video.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Fran Bow - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-10-08 | Fran Bow is an indie Point and Click adventure game from Killmonday Games. Despite it's relaxed gameplay style there is no denying this game's status as a raw and unappologetic horror game. It's rare to think of "horror" seperated from "survival" these days but Fran Bow is a great example of the true horror effect, creating dread in place of fear.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!A Quick Thing on Blues and Bullets - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-07-17 | Blues and Bullets, by A Crowd of Monsters is a modern point and click (ish) adventure game in the same vein as Telltale, or Quantic Dream. Set in post-prohibition America, Elliot Ness is hired by his old nemesis, Al Capone, to find his missing grand-daughter. This Gangster style drama takes a turn for the weird as more facets of the case are uncovered. It's a great premise, and the first chapter, reviewed in video, certainly tells us as much.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Top 20 Donkey Kong Country Levels Part 2: 10-1 - VZedshows (feat. Perrydactyl)VZedshows2016-06-30 | Continuing my re-visiting of the Donkey Kong Country series, ten more of my favourite levels from Rareware's masterpieces takes us to the end. Diddy's Kong Quest, Dixie Kong's Double Trouble and the original game round out three of my favourite games on the Super Nintendo. Thanks for watching my SNES adventure and stay tuned because next time we do something other than Donkey Kong... for once...
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Top 20 Donkey Kong Country Levels Part 1: 20-11 - VZedshows (feat. snomaNgaming)VZedshows2016-05-19 | It is hard for me to stay away from the Donkey Kong Country series. Rareware hit on some real gems back in the SNES days and i'm more than happy that Nintendo preserves these games on the Wii and Wii U virtual console. I never stop playing these games, and while i messing around with a speedrun of Donkey Kong Country 2 i started to think about some of my favourite levels in the series, but i couldn't get the list any smaller than 20. So we're doing a top 20. Here's numbers 20-11 of my Top 20 DKC levels.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Resident Evil: The Perfect Scare - Magic Moments - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-04-12 | The long running Resident Evil series (Biohazard in Japan) is one of Capcom's classic franchises. Resident Evil Remake, originally out on the Gamecube, is one of my all time favourite games. It's the first survival horror game i ever played and by golly if it wasn't the perfect primer for the rest of the genre. The game is filled with awesome moments and memories, but how many of them qualify as magical? Lisa Trevor is an enemy the player will come across about halfway through the game, and is, in my mind, a perfect example of how to build a classic scary moment in a video game. On this first installment of Magic Moments we take a look at Lisa Trevor's introduction step by step. An amazing bit of good game design, GREAT game design, actually, and one of my favourite scary moments in all of video gamedom.
Magic Moments is a new series on my channel looking at specifica moments in games that exemplifie good game design, narrative construction, or thematic execution. In this first episode we look at Resident Evil Remake's Lisa Trevor, and the way she is first introduced to the players.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Blast Corps - I Like to Video Games - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-03-08 | Blast Corps. a Rareware title for the Nintendo 64, is the latest in my FebuRAREy experiences. Simple yet engaging gameplay, an amazing industrial soundtrack by Graeme Norgate, and yet i overlooked this gem until this year. God Bless FebuRAREy.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Banjo Tooie - I Like to Video Games - VZedshowsVZedshows2016-02-11 | Banjo Tooie kicks off FebuRAREy 2016. Follow-up to Rareware's much lauded Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie is yet another game i have yet to play. So i fired up my Nintendo 64 and set off on this new adventure with the old Bear and Bird.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!VZedshows Live StreamVZedshows2016-01-05 | ...The Beginners Guide (spoilers) - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-12-29 | Spoiler Free video: youtu.be/e-8pB2CS98g Davey Wreden's The Beginner's Guide is the spiritual successor, in some ways, to The Stanley Parable, which Wreden is also known for. Said to be a commentary on Game Design, as well as a deeply affecting story about the creative process, this game came highly recommended from my peers and associates, and did not disappoint. Such a thought provoking game is exactly the kind of thing i crave in my gaming experiences so following my spoiler free review (found below) i whipped up this video that goes a bit deeper

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!A Quick Thing on The Beginners Guide (spoiler free) - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-12-27 | Spiritual successor to The Stanley Parable, Davey Wreden allows us to join him on a quest through the mind of a creator. The Beginner's Guide is a journey in of itself, and really is much more of an experience than a game. This spoiler free video is a quick look at this game from a purchasing stand piont, and there will be a spoiler filled examination video following it.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Top 5 Legend of Zelda Dungeons - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-11-29 | I have always loved The Legend of Zelda series. Ever since A Link to the Past I have always high-tailed it over to Hyrule when the opportunity arises. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess remain today as some of my favourite games of all time. Of course Dungeons and Temples are such a huge part of the games and some shine forth as my favourites. While I have too much trouble making up my mind once and for all I thought i would take a moment to reflect on the ones that spring to mind first when i think of my top 5 Zelda Dungeons.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!The Horror in Darkest Dungeon - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-11-05 | Darkest Dungeon has a whole lot of great stuff going on in one great game. Borrowing from such genres as Rogue-like's, JRPGs, and Dungeon Crawlers, Red Hook Studios have certainly struck something special. I've been enjoying this title for the past few months, and though the game doesn't necessarily play out like a horror game, i found myself reflecting on exactly what it is that constitutes a horror game these days

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!A Quick Thing on Home - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-10-15 | Home, developed and designed by Benjaman Rivers is a short creepy murder mystery game available on Steam. It took me some time to get around to this game, and I thought I'd share a review and some quick thoughts on the game.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Resident Evil 6 Part 2: Chriss Story - I Like to Video Games - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-10-03 | And with that, it is time to return to Resident Evil 6 (Biohazard 6). I Like to Video games sets out to complete chapter 2, featuring series veteran Chris Redfield. It isn't long before things get dangerous on this adventure, and our heroes must persevere through thick and thin to make it out the other side alive... wait, you thought i was talking about the game? nah, i'm taking about playing it.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Illusion of Gaia - For Better or Worse - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-08-29 | Illusion of Gaia (Illusion of Time in PAL regions) goes as far back for me as being one of the first video games i ever played. This Quintet SNES Action RPG is quite possibly directly responsible for many of my gaming tastes, which is... kinda cool when you think about it. After hitting 1000 subscribers I promised another For Better or Worse, and i thought it was about time i went in depth into one of my favourite classic SNES games, which also happens to be pretty under-apreciated.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Revenge of the Milestonia - Castle 1000 - I Like to Video GamesVZedshows2015-08-20 | 1000 subscribers! Not something that happens every day. Had to take a moment to say thank you with a new castle build.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!A Quick Thing on Eldritch - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-08-03 | Roguelikes certainly are everywhere nowadays, and i love it. Minor Key Games released Eldritch, a first person dungeon-crawling roguelike set in a Lovecraftian world of terrors, in December of 2013. It's been on my radar for some time now, and I thought i would share my thoughts on the game.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Resident Evil 6 Part 1 Leons Story - I Like to Video Games - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-07-07 | Resident Evil (Known as Biohazard in Japan) has always been one of my favourites, and yet i haven't played Resident Evil 6. From the original, to Code Veronica i enjoyed of them. When Resident Evil 4 was released the game was changed, and nothing would be the same again. We all thought this was the beginning of a brave new world for Resident Evil, but wouldn't you know it, not all of this new hottness translated into future sequels. So, let's see how this goes... gonna be scary... for the wrongreasons.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!A Quick Thing on Sunless Sea - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-05-31 | Sunless Sea is a Rogue-Like or Rogue-Lite from Fail Better Games, best known as the creators of Fallen London, or Echo Bazaar. It's a game about exploring a haunted under ground sea setting out from the very same Fallen London of the game of eponymous game. It's a title i've been looking forward to, and now i finally see if it holds up.
THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Hotline Miami - I Like to Video Games - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-05-14 | Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is now on virtual store shelves, the follow up to Dennaton Games' 2012 title, Hotline Miami. Much anticipation stood in front of it, but the lead up to the game's release got me reflecting on my experience with the first game. Now a staple of Devolver Digital's catalogue, Hotline Miami is certainly not a game that is easily over looked or forgotten, with it's hyper-violent gameplay and thought provoking narrative. After playing it's sequel, i started to reflect on how different the two games were. And so we start at the beginning...

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR!Donkey Kong 64 - For Better or Worse - VZedshowsVZedshows2015-04-06 | FebuRAREy finally comes to close with Donkey Kong 64. One of the best Rareware titles on the Nintendo 64. Adventure Platforming with a priceless score by the legendary Grant Kirkhope. Donkey Kong is one of my favourite series of video games of all time. Going as far back as the Donkey Kong Country series and remaining so to this day, with the new revival of DKC games from Retro Studios. But between the original series, and new series, the left out middle child of the series, Donkey Kong 64, is often forgotten, but with a new release coming on the Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console the time is perfect for a look back at one of my favourite games.
For Better or Worse is a series in depth examinations of classic games which i've already played and come to a conclusion on, and are important to me for one or more reasons.
