12 Tales to Terrify! • The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology Typical Books of Terror 2024-08-10 | Not long ago I picked up The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology which is a 1960s book put out by souvenir press. The book as advertised contains horror stories of the time chosen by Boris Karloff of horror movie fame. Aside from two outliers most of the stories range from the early 1930s to the late 1950s and of course includes an earlier tale by HP Lovecraft entitled The Haunter of the dark and an Edgar Allan Poe story entitled The Cask of Amontillado. Some of the authors here have names that filled me with joy like August Derleth and Robert Bloch. I was very curious to read an entry by Roald Dahl. The surprises, to me, were stories by Theodore Sturgeon entitled The Graveyard Reader and John Jakes’ The Opener of the Crypt which Boris Karloff highlights in his introduction. I very much enjoyed the first story in the book The 13th Floor by Frank Gruber. In this video I will talk about some of the stories very briefly without any real description so you can enjoy these stories and discover them for yourself; but I do show the artwork that accompanied each chapter - artwork that may be by the same Illustrator as the cover which is the enigmatic S.R. Boldero. True Horror! True Crime • Graphic Novels Typical Books of Terror 2024-07-23 | True crime is the most graphic of horror - yet graphic novels are one of the most balanced ways to tell these stories. Perhaps it is the constraints to the page, or the smaller amount of text for lurid details, and in the few book I talk about today the limited palette of colours; often black and white. While these are stories we know well - Dahmer, Gein, Ridgway - I found these books told it in a new and arresting way. I am on the look out for more. With the most recent addition to my small collection, Torso, I get to go back in time to the most wicked cold case of all, The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. The Haunting of Velkwood • Horror Book Review Typical Books of Terror 2024-07-15 | The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendolyn Kiste was almost an instant buy for me. I chose this book entirely because of the summary. It did not hurt that it was written by a three-time Bram Stoker award winner and had a very cool cover. While I am not a fan of yellow, I appreciated how it has this yellow police tape feel without being actual police tape. You get a sense of being barred from seeing what the picture is of on account of the text. Or the yellow of the lines painted down the middle of a road. But the actual road is not quite there. After reading the novel, the cover takes on only a slightly deeper meaning, but it certainly caught my eye and played well with the summary.While writing style never usually influences my choice of a book, I really do like a strong narrative so that's what this is; it's written in the first person present tense so nothing overly experimental or jarring. Withered • YA horror novel Typical Books of Terror 2024-06-17 | Withered is a young adult hometown horror novel by Canadian author A.G.A Wilmot. The cover and summary of this book sounded so perfect to me! I checked to see if it was YA but it seemed to be a straight-up haunted house, haunted town, haunted past coming-of-age horror so I was sold. Lots of horror stories involving kids, teens, or coming of age aren't YA books so I figured this would be a fit. When ECW asked if I wanted a review copy, I jumped on it, so thank you ECW! Rural Victorian Dark Folk Horror • Grey Dog by Elliott Gish Typical Books of Terror 2024-04-13 | Like a dark and twisted Anne of Green Gables, this book was a welcome addition for me; and very well written for a debut novel. I was happily surprised at how much I related to the very odd and “unlikable” main character Ada Byrd. There was a great balance of late-Victorian references, flk horror tone, and modern sensibility, as well as a cozy atmosphere created by the diary style of the book. The ideas of intimate desire, reckless abuse and longing for friendship were so blurred at times, that there was a lovely sort of delirium created for the reader which mirrored the iceberg tip of the madness forming in Ada. Absolutely beautiful reading in Grey Dog, by Elliott Gish. I'd wanted to read this and was so pleased when ECW reached out with a review copy ~ thank you, Claire! While perusing catalogs of new books coming out Grey Dog caught my eye because of the contradictory nature of its cover. I was hoping that it would have something to do with sort of a body horror or some animalistic nature transformation and I wasn't exactly right although there is some sort of body horror... if you count the use of dead animals and a little skull within the story. The stark nature of what almost looks like a woodcut lent itself to the description of this book taking place in the 1900s so I caught a “botanical dark academia” flavour just from the illustration on the front.Much to my delight the author is from the East Coast and did find inspiration in Lucy Maud Montgomery and the Anne of Green Gables, so if you ever wanted that in horror form, this is one for you!This is the debut novel by Elliott Gish and I am looking forward to more. While I picked up books from other stores, they all pale compared to the selection, vibe, and dedication to genre fiction that my favourite bookstore does. Not only are there some Frank Belknap Long and Jack Ketchum books in here, but there are cults, true crime, horror masters, and governmental disasters... and poetry. Three good horror books that were just not for me • Horror Reading Missteps Typical Books of Terror 2024-03-16 | While I am not in the habit of posting poor reviews, I wanted to talk about these three books - even if I didn't like them much. I’ve rarely posted reviews of books that were not for me mostly because I chose narrowly from a narrow genre: horror. It is not to say they were poorly written at all, they are all good. I had waited for Waif and am so happy to own a copy; Nineteen Little Stab Wounds was a delightful find; My Throat an Open Grave is just a wonderfully complete package from pillar to post and beautifully written.They are all dark, twisty, horrific or weird. But... They were just not for me at all. Before I get too deep into that: here is the link to the radio drama version of Sticks by Karl Edward Wagner zbs.org/audio/Sticks.mp3Now, be it the recency, or the fact that I wanted to like these books so much - I also still want to share them because I know they do and will have fans! Especially My Throat and Open Grave. Biblical connotations of the title aside, it was a Puritan nightmare! It's a really beautifully written folk horror book and beautifully bound. The one review I did edit heavily was for My Throat an Open Grave where I felt I was reading a subtweet for a hundred pages or heavily disguised Christian propaganda. It was a strange feeling because they have teen troubles that are not resolved in a wholesome way, the outcome is the opposite of an after-school special, and the whole problem started because of a cult-like Christian town. I am still not sure why I felt I was being sold snake oil throughout. On the other side of that, I felt the pandering to angsty teens was a little over the top and something I thought we had left behind over a decade ago. I will say the twist was unique and I loved how revenge played a big part in the first big resolution here, but I still felt at odds with the central theme as I came away with ‘women are bad and you should feel bad’ when I am sure the opposite was intended. Anyhow! I'll be reading a few great books to come, and The Haunting of Velkwood! Disturbing Books Iceberg • Horror in the murky depths? Typical Books of Terror 2024-02-26 | Disturbing books are so often synonymous with horror fiction. While there are classics, nonfiction, memoirs and other genres that are 'disturbing' I've found horror tends to populate the tops and bottoms of these iceberg images that are popular online. Is there a level below, sinking deeper than the murky depths? The Only One Left • My first Riley Sager horror book review Typical Books of Terror 2024-01-25 | If this isn't a nouveau gothic, I don't want to know what is. Truly. I had a lot of fun with this and if you are not having fun with fiction then... Pick up a copy here: amzn.to/48OdWoa - I may stick to pronouncing it Say-Guhr! I've heard a few interviews since and this is how it is said almost always when people speak with him. The title of this book and the cover combined caught my eye. I'm not a huge fan of this orangish red and blue color combination but I do like a book with a house on the cover. The Only One Left as a title evokes a sort of gothic feel, some sort of familicide perhaps had gone on and that turned out to be true. The front cover with its colors evoked the title of a short story from ages ago ‘Orange is for Anguish Blue for Insanity’ and I figured this would have to do with some sort of perhaps unreliable narrator which wasn't exactly the case. But be that as it may, the cover and the title of this book along with some of the pedigree of the author did its work to entice me to read it. I'd never read any Riley Sager and I figured this would be a good spot to start. Will I read more Riley Sager? Maybe. The Grimmer • A dark urban YA horror with occult mysteries Typical Books of Terror 2023-10-02 | Vish has returned from boarding school to a life upside down in The Grimmer. The premise, the artwork, the music, and a debut in its demographic from Canadian author Naben Ruthnum; I was very excited for this. Thank you for ECW for sending the advance reading copy along!“The small-town mysteries … made modern with a dash of Stranger Things in this spine-tingling supernatural horror-thriller” as Google Books puts it and I would say a YA Grady Hendrix in the making as well. Also suitable for some middle-grade readers as there is no sex or brutality. It does mention drug use and alcoholism, though nothing overt is on the page. A fine occult dark urban fantasy with horror elements and a fun way to start my autumn reads! In my effort to avoid spoilers for this and Helpmeet, I had not heard the correct pronunciation of the authors name until after recording - so now I know! It seems to be Naben as 'nah-ben' which is much nicer than my 'nay-ben' and Ruthnum has more of a 'ruh' than a 'roo'. Weird curios on my book shelf! • And a creepy Lewis Carroll book Typical Books of Terror 2023-08-27 | Welcome to my creepy bookshelves! The curio tag caught my eye when @edlewisnoctreviews did a fantastic version, then i just watched @revenantreads doing this as well while this video was rendering. I love seeing everyone's shelves. With the new books I have to make room for, I'll be rearranging my collection in a matter of days here so this serves as a good little record. First though, we went to a local library sale and Black Squirrel Books so I have a few new 'curios'. The prize so far is either topping off my V. C. Andrews collection, or this amazing limited photo book of Lewis Carroll's letters to his child friends. Ira Levin, Brian Keene, Tim Lebbon, Tim Waggoner, Tim McGregor, and if I could come up with another 'Tim' horror author, I'd have bought their books too! Why Nothing But Blackened Teeth sparks mixed reviews • Beyond the Cover Typical Books of Terror 2023-07-15 | There were widely mixed reviews for Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw and I am very late to the game. I will always think of this as one of the best presented books in a long time - the cover art is beautiful. I also enjoyed the story, and the more I think on it, it strikes me as a manga-style, 90s teen horror cycle tale told with a far more modern take on language, with more than one cardboard cut-out character. But that is fine, since we have our hero Cat to guide us through this; whether it be in our search for true horror or fan-service easter-eggs.
