I had a great time reading this and huge thank you to Inkshares for sending it along - thanks, Noah!
For each of the four novellas, I talk about how each related to a specific author in Kill Creek. You may recall; Sam McGarver, TC Moore, Sebastian Cole and Daniel Slaughter. Authors that remind us all of real writers we know and love. This was the world created in Kill Creek and it is deepened here, having work by these authors woven into each story.
From the jacket:
In The Door in the Field, a construction worker's bad day becomes a far worse night when drinks at an off-the-books bar send him down an unforeseeably bloody path.
In The Boy in the Woods, something evil has infected the counselors at a summer camp, and a young boy will have to do anything he can to survive the night.
In One Half of a Child’s Face, a woman spying on her daughter and ex-husband notices an odd painting hanging in an empty apartment . . . one that seems to call to the building’s children.
In Wear Your Secret Like a Stone, a big-box clerk discovers that her book pick for a Halloween display echoes a dark secret hidden beneath the idyllic facade of her hometown.
With this collection, Scott Thomas digs his hands into the soil of the American heartland and establishes himself as a master of Midwestern Gothic.

This is truly the first event of its kind in Canada - and if you are familiar with Shock Stock or maybe even the dealers room at a large horror authors convention, it is like that for just books. Sure, there were a few adjacent bookish goods and wares, but almost all of the tables were books and authors. Sponsored by Eerie River Publishing and Rue Morgue Magazine, it was a perfect event that I hope will repeat annually (or more often) for a very long time! More here - dreadconcan.com

I think every time I read a camp slasher I go back to Friday the 13th or Sleepaway Camp as far as film goes and in books you know... I really only have Con Season by Adam Caesar to equate this to. If you know of any other campground in the cabins pine needle strewn pathway camp slashers that live up to those, let me know. I've also likened it as well to Supermassive games like The Quarry so I highly recommend that if you haven't played it yet or if you did enjoy it, definitely check out Heads Will Roll.

(We will be back to normal booktube by Sunday with a look at new horror books coming out in September.)
Rachel from the Shades of Orange had a brilliant idea with this tag. I may not do many tags, but she does even less! I not only had a laugh with some parts of her video, but she had me nodding in agreement, or yelling at clouds as the topic can be subtly dramatic for me. Just when I thought I was over it, Olly did this over at CriminOlly and it was also a very good video. Again, subtly dramatic for me! They are both very good YouTubers with very good channels. Want to see an actual bad booktuber? Well step right up!
Maybe this was somewhat based on Daniel Greene’s The Worst BookTuber on Youtube, but I didn’t finish watching his video for whatever reason.
Probably because I too, am a bad booktuber...

Some of the authors here have names that filled me with joy like August Derleth and Robert Bloch. I was very curious to read an entry by Roald Dahl. The surprises, to me, were stories by Theodore Sturgeon entitled The Graveyard Reader and John Jakes’ The Opener of the Crypt which Boris Karloff highlights in his introduction. I very much enjoyed the first story in the book The 13th Floor by Frank Gruber.
In this video I will talk about some of the stories very briefly without any real description so you can enjoy these stories and discover them for yourself; but I do show the artwork that accompanied each chapter - artwork that may be by the same Illustrator as the cover which is the enigmatic S.R. Boldero. For more on the artist, I read a lovely blog here: bearalley.blogspot.com/2009/11/s-r-boldero.html

While these are stories we know well - Dahmer, Gein, Ridgway - I found these books told it in a new and arresting way. I am on the look out for more. With the most recent addition to my small collection, Torso, I get to go back in time to the most wicked cold case of all, The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. I got my copy here: amzn.to/46jRmTD or find it on BookShop bookshop.org/a/12297/9781506730257.
I'll have a review or discussion soon enough but this comes highly recommended! Have you read this or do you know of a true crime graphic novel I should pick up?

While writing style never usually influences my choice of a book, I really do like a strong narrative so that's what this is; it's written in the first person present tense so nothing overly experimental or jarring. I find the first person present really works if you want to take somebody on a journey and that is exactly where we go back to Velkwood...

Two of these win 'best horror book cover of the month' awards.
I also get to see that a book I am very interested in just came out - from the authors of Old Country, Matt Query and Harrison Query have Wilderness Reform out now. So, that is on my list but I may have to do a poll to decide on another since they all sound so good to me. Have any of these ended up on your shelf already?

From the back cover:
After the tragic death of their father and surviving a life-threatening eating disorder, 18-year-old Ellis moves with their mother to the small town of Black Stone, seeking a simpler life and some space to recover. But Black Stone feels off; it’s a disquieting place surrounded by towns with some of the highest death rates in the country. It doesn’t help that everyone says Ellis’s new house is haunted — everyone including Quinn, a local girl who has quickly captured Ellis’s attention. And Ellis has started to believe what people are saying: they see pulsing veins in their bedroom walls and spectres in dark corners of the cellar. Together, Ellis and Quinn dig deep into Black Stone’s past and soon discover that their town, and Ellis’s house in particular, is the battleground in a decades-long spectral war, one that will claim their family — and the town — if it’s allowed to continue.

I'll talk a little bit about what I'm reading right now, what I just read, and about some reviews forthcoming. The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendoline Krist may just be my favourite book of the year so far and we'll just wait and see to see if it becomes the favourite book of 2024. Well, I don't have a whole bunch of photos from my little tiny vacation I do have one Sunset photo included in this video which may be of interest because it is for seconds of pure relaxation. heading out to the library book sale this weekend so there may be some more Acquisitions to come but in the meantime here is some contact information for DL Tillery ~ thank you so much for watching have a new key spooky day!

So, for a little fun thinkpiece, we delve into six questions about what sort of booktube channel we have here.
Questions discussed here are::
1. What do you want your channel to be known for?
2. What content will people find on your channel?
3. What is the most represented genre of books?
4. What book are you known for championing?
5. What author is regularly featured on your channel?
6. What can people expect in the future? (reveal some exciting plans)
7. Tag people and state 'what you know them for?'. (wherein I just leave this an open tag)

The list includes two I am reading now, one I will absolutely be buying as soon as it drops in June, and two new books from horror royalty, Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates.
I will likely do a new partner pick poll in May so some of these will make an appearance! All these and more are listed on typicalbooks.com/newhorror so be sure to click through for more after the show.

Absolutely beautiful reading in Grey Dog, by Elliott Gish. I'd wanted to read this and was so pleased when ECW reached out with a review copy ~ thank you, Claire! While perusing catalogs of new books coming out Grey Dog caught my eye because of the contradictory nature of its cover. I was hoping that it would have something to do with sort of a body horror or some animalistic nature transformation and I wasn't exactly right although there is some sort of body horror... if you count the use of dead animals and a little skull within the story. The stark nature of what almost looks like a woodcut lent itself to the description of this book taking place in the 1900s so I caught a “botanical dark academia” flavour just from the illustration on the front.
Much to my delight the author is from the East Coast and did find inspiration in Lucy Maud Montgomery and the Anne of Green Gables, so if you ever wanted that in horror form, this is one for you!
This is the debut novel by Elliott Gish and I am looking forward to more.
Pick up Grey Dog here amzn.to/3UgdlXe
From the back cover copy: “The year is 1901, and Ada Byrd ― spinster, schoolmarm, amateur naturalist ― accepts a teaching post in isolated Lowry Bridge, grateful for the chance to re-establish herself where no one knows her secrets. She develops friendships with her neighbours, explores the woods with her students, and begins to see a future in this tiny farming community. Her past ― riddled with grief and shame ― has never seemed so far away...”

17 books hauled, about half horror, and all perfect additions to my library.
While this is a plain haul video, I may do another vlog-style video next year where we visit not only the best bookstore in the galaxy but Dino's Pizza Teria too.
I have the original folk horror starring Cotton Mather now! Not only are there some Frank Belknap Long and Jack Ketchum books in here, but there are cults, true crime, horror masters, and governmental disasters... and poetry. It is all lost without a little poetry.

They are all dark, twisty, horrific or weird. But... They were just not for me at all.
Before I get too deep into that: here is the link to the radio drama version of Sticks by Karl Edward Wagner zbs.org/audio/Sticks.mp3
Now, be it the recency, or the fact that I wanted to like these books so much - I also still want to share them because I know they do and will have fans!
Especially My Throat and Open Grave. Biblical connotations of the title aside, it was a Puritan nightmare! It's a really beautifully written folk horror book and beautifully bound.
The one review I did edit heavily was for My Throat an Open Grave where I felt I was reading a subtweet for a hundred pages or heavily disguised Christian propaganda. It was a strange feeling because they have teen troubles that are not resolved in a wholesome way, the outcome is the opposite of an after-school special, and the whole problem started because of a cult-like Christian town. I am still not sure why I felt I was being sold snake oil throughout. On the other side of that, I felt the pandering to angsty teens was a little over the top and something I thought we had left behind over a decade ago. I will say the twist was unique and I loved how revenge played a big part in the first big resolution here, but I still felt at odds with the central theme as I came away with ‘women are bad and you should feel bad’ when I am sure the opposite was intended.
Anyhow! I'll be reading a few great books to come, and The Haunting of Velkwood! Thank you to everyone who voted!

Most un-haul videos feature tens of books, or over a hundred. I simply don't buy books like that I suppose, and have six to talk about. These are not slam reviews either, but honest points as to why I am setting these books free, to be hunted by others in the wild.

The title of this book and the cover combined caught my eye. I'm not a huge fan of this orangish red and blue color combination but I do like a book with a house on the cover. The Only One Left as a title evokes a sort of gothic feel, some sort of familicide perhaps had gone on and that turned out to be true. The front cover with its colors evoked the title of a short story from ages ago ‘Orange is for Anguish Blue for Insanity’ and I figured this would have to do with some sort of perhaps unreliable narrator which wasn't exactly the case. But be that as it may, the cover and the title of this book along with some of the pedigree of the author did its work to entice me to read it. I'd never read any Riley Sager and I figured this would be a good spot to start. Will I read more Riley Sager? Maybe. I have already been tempted!

Here is a short clutch of books that caught my eye for January, starting with a few from Horror Writers Association authors. See more like that over at horror.org/newreleases/. There are not too many books coming out in January 2024 that really caught my eye. Certainly, if you look at some publishers lists there are more, but nothing that really strikes me as good old fashioned horror. I think we are all reeling a little from the speed at which 2023 seemed to creep up on us, shake us in its jaws and toss us ina corner. That is, if you read the news. If you were blissful and only the main character in tour own story I have feeling it was a rather quiet passing of twelve regular months. I was half of one, and half the other. Here are some very interesting books coming out soon, and some out already...
-Shadows & Ink: Mastering the art of Horror Writing and Publishing Volume 1 by Joe Mynhardt
-Metal Demon by Julie Hiner
-Perverted Little Freak by Rick Wood
-Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin with an Introduction by Chuck Palahniuk and afterword by R. L. Stine
-The Bad Weather Friend by Dean Koontz
-The Best Horror of the Year Volume 15, edited by Ellen Datlow
-A Place for Vanishing by Ann Fraistat
-The Winslow Sisters by Michael Aronovitz
Right now I am reading - The Only One Left: A Novel by Riley Sager amzn.to/3tUI69V

While my goal is still around 30 books, I do hope to read more. Is that perverse? After admitting a book a month is the healthy pace? When I look at how quick I can devour a book I am enjoying, I could easily read a book every three days... but there is more to life than great horror novels. There is meeting great horror authors! I had the pleasure of having met a few of the authors in my top ten ,so come along and see who they might have been!

In horror literature, novellas are perfect additions to any collection. Their short and digestible length make them perfect for one sitting, giving readers instant immersion into chilling narratives. Novellas serve as a nuanced introduction to an author's style, allowing enthusiasts to traverse the macabre landscapes of renowned talents without having to invest time or money into a whole novel. Shorter work used to be more popular in previous centuries, and horror novellas emerge once again as new treasures, with a new-found literary sophistication, in my opinion, and offering enthusiasts a swift yet profound journey into the realms of dread.

"There are others out there in the night, roaming the streets, lurking in the darkness―waiting to show Ed just how different his world could be. Some of them are enticing, like the beautiful girl who wants to teach Ed about the wonders of the night. Some are disturbing and threatening. Some are deadly…And in search of prey."
A wild ride, like most Laymon, but tempered with the soft hush of a chilly night wind, and footsteps through leaves on darkened streets.

Merrickville itself is a perfect little Halloween town, but the real horror was finding a wrecked copy of Stephen King's Night Shift at a charity book sale. I wanted to mend it but can't just take in every stray I see...

Poppy Z. Brite wrote an illuminating introduction... and we will need it to see by down these dark halls wherein the boogeyman dwells. There are 18 stories about various boogeys ~ and four of the eighteen stories are reprints: the ones by Stephen King, Joe R. Lansdale, Ramsey Campbell, and Richard Chizmar. If the introduction and knowledge doesn't chase the haints away, it glows in th dark too, so that may light your way.
kickstarter.com/projects/acheronint/enter-boogeyman-the-horror-anthology
I also get into other boogeymen: from the recent film from a story by Stephen King and even The Halloween film franchise.
From wikipedia, "The Boogeyman is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman and a screen story by Beck and Woods. It is based on the 1973 short story of the same name, by Stephen King.[6] The film stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and David Dastmalchian." It is on Hulu and Disney and I rented it on Itunes.
We even get to talk once more about "Becoming the Boogeyman" by Richard Chizmar which is "genuinely chilling and something brand-new and exciting” (according to Stephen King) and comes out October 10 as the follow up to the successful "Chasing the Boogeyman". Chizmar also has an entry in Enter Boogeyman. It all came together after a little Carpenter movie marathon and I realized I'd not said, read or heard the word boogeyman more in the last few days than I had over my entire life. So, what's a few more! Shall we?

A young adult horror that speaks to seasoned fans of cult and occult horror like few can; Hurtado outdoes the first book in this series with a stellar sequel.
Thank you to InkShares for sending this advance reading copy along, and thank you to Celso for writing such a great book! Highly recommended, so let me know if you have read either book. The Devil's Promise comes out October 3, 2023, just in time for spooky season reading! amzn.to/46c6GAV

“The small-town mysteries … made modern with a dash of Stranger Things in this spine-tingling supernatural horror-thriller” as Google Books puts it and I would say a YA Grady Hendrix in the making as well. Also suitable for some middle-grade readers as there is no sex or brutality. It does mention drug use and alcoholism, though nothing overt is on the page.
A fine occult dark urban fantasy with horror elements and a fun way to start my autumn reads!
In my effort to avoid spoilers for this and Helpmeet, I had not heard the correct pronunciation of the authors name until after recording - so now I know! It seems to be Naben as 'nah-ben' which is much nicer than my 'nay-ben' and Ruthnum has more of a 'ruh' than a 'roo'.
From ECW “Bringing together scares, suspense, and body horror, The Grimmer is award-winning author Naben Ruthnum’s first foray into the young adult genre. Set in Kelowna, B.C., it follows metalhead highschooler Vish as he battles with an interdimensional invasion, all while dealing with being one of the only brown kids in a small town.
This gripping ride through the supernatural is loaded with vivid characters and frightening imagery. Although this is YA, Naben is such a great author and the book deals with complex issues such as grief, racism, and addiction that make it an accessible book for readers of all ages.”
Let me know if you have read this one!

Sure, they won't have the sort of horror I like to read most of the time, but there are loads of Stephen King and V. C. Andrews book club editions everywhere for a reason! So, here is my chance to get the BOTM back and make it horror.
Do you have BOTM? Other book box services sound great, but are they worth it? Let me know what you think!

First though, we went to a local library sale and Black Squirrel Books so I have a few new 'curios'. The prize so far is either topping off my V. C. Andrews collection, or this amazing limited photo book of Lewis Carroll's letters to his child friends. Creepy, yes; horror, perhaps not... but unsettleing!
