Thinking Like a Musical Instrument or Psychoactive Substances Give Access to the Nature of Brains Qualia Productions 2022-01-21 | In this video we illustrate the similarity between the brain and a musical instrument. The brain tissue is represented by metal and the brain activity by sound. The effect of substances such as psychedelics and dissociatives is mimicked by heating and cooling the metal. The engineering term for such heat treatment of metal is “annealing”. What we demonstrate is a very simplified toy model but which can be surprisingly useful for understanding the overall type of system dynamics going on in brains.The model is based on the fact that both sound and neuronal firing are examples of oscillatory activity which can have different frequency, amplitude, coherence, and damping. Hammering the metal represents the memory imprint made in the brain by our ongoing experiences. The sound pattern produced by the hammered metal contains complexity which corresponds to learning. But a side effect of the increased complexity is lower overall consonance of the oscillatory activity. To stay healthy, the brain must periodically undergo what the Qualia Research Institute calls “neural annealing”. In a neural network model, this can be thought of as redistributing synaptic weights more globally across the connectome and thus make the learned information more harmoniously integrated and holistically retrievable. This normally happens during sleep but can become even more powerful with meditation and psychedelics. In this demonstration where metal is annealed, it is the positions of the metal atoms which adjust themselves so that the entire piece of metal becomes a better conductor of sound. It may seem strange that this can happen, but neither the metal nor the brain is fundamentally magical. Both cases involve self-organizing system dynamics. In the case of the brain, the activity is accompanied by conscious experiences. The Qualia Research Institute works under the assumption that these are not magical either but can be modeled mathematically in a similar way to chemistry and physics. It is then necessary to test how measurements of brain activity correlate with conscious experiences not only during sober waking life but also under conditions which are very different.The QRI is building a new paradigm for understanding the mind and the brain. Are there similarities between crystals and states of mind? Qualia Productions 2022-08-16 | Qualia Research Institute is working on the hypothesis that conscious mind states consist of topologically segmented electromagnetic energy states which are produced by the electrochemical activity of brain neurons. In that model, states of consciousness, or “qualia”, are energy bundles which may grow and dissolve in a mathematically similar way to how mineral crystals grow and dissolve in magma. Magma behaves as a growth medium. Small changes in the composition and temperature of the magma can lead to big changes in the types and properties of the crystals which grow or dissolve in it. The top face on the ruby crystals shown as an illustration gets re-shaped into a tip by growing out of existence as the temperature of the growth medium is progressively lowered. Growth inhibition effects are more pronounced at low temperatures than at high temperatures. Crystal complexity becomes higher as growth temperature decreases, but overall symmetry becomes lower. The brain behaves as a growth medium for qualia. Qualia grow and dissolve many orders of magnitude faster than mineral crystals, but it is still a somewhat analogous process when viewed mathematically. In the brain, the low temperature crystallization conditions may mathematically correspond to a normal waking state, while the high temperature conditions correspond to an advanced meditation state. Can topological segmentation model pleasure, pain, - and hardness? Qualia Productions 2022-08-11 | Qualia Research Institute is working on the hypothesis that conscious mind states consist of topologically segmented electromagnetic energy states which are produced by the electrochemical activity of brain neurons. When geologists searched for a relative hardness scale of minerals with enough increase in hardness at each step for easy distinction by a scratch test, the result was the Mohs scale. However, when measured on an absolute scale, the progression in hardness from talc to diamond turns out to be nonlinear. Diamond at Mohs 10 is actually several times harder than corundum at Mohs 9. Biological evolution can be said to have “searched” for relative pain and pleasure scales where clearly subjectively distinguishable brain activity states can now be ordered by human psychologists on a relative scale in a similar way to the way human geologists put together the mineral hardness scale. Surprisingly, the absolute values of each step on the pleasure and pain scales are roughly similarly nonlinear as the mineral hardness scale. In line with QRI research, this could be because both the hardness of materials and the mental states of minds are brought about by structuring of the universal electromagnetic quantum field. Experiences of pleasure and pain are examples of mind state properties on the valence axis, which forms a spectrum going from neutral towards increasingly negative experiences in one direction and towards increasingly positive experiences in the other direction. It is the fact that many degrees of positive and negative valence can “meld” in the same moment of experience which makes it possible for us to have generally intelligent common sense decision-making where we choose the best option among several conflicting alternatives. But why does the valence scale appear to be nonlinear? In everyday life the range of valences is often limited and seems approximately linear, but if you happened to be stung by a bullet ant or got reunited with your long lost child, you’d be surprised by how incredibly intense some of the more uncommon valence states are, compared to what you would have guessed based on only ordinary everyday life. The answer might be found in drawing a parallel with the much smaller topologically segmented electromagnetic energy states better known as atoms. Atoms can interconnect into solids, liquids or gases. How strongly atoms interconnect turns out to also be on a nonlinear scale. For solids, the strength with which the atoms are held together is reflected in the hardness. For gases, the strength with which the atoms are negatively held together is reflected in the pressure. Liquids are ”neutral” in that they have essentially no hardness and exert very little pressure in weightless conditions, although external forces can readily be transmitted through them. Does the brain produce some mind states which are like liquids, some which are like solids, and some which are like gases? The gas-like states could put “pressure” on the liquid-like ones to make them feel negative. With positive valence, the liquid-like ones may “crystallize” into different topological geometries with several levels of “hardness”. Take a complex system, add one extra component to it, and in some cases the system then self-organizes a system-wide simple pattern. Planet Earth is an example of a very complex system, which includes water and biosphere. If a certain amount of carbon dioxide were to be added to it, Earth would “tip” into being a drastically simpler system where neither life nor liquid water would exist. Temperature would still exist, although much more uniform and high than before. A sober human brain is another example of a very complex system, which includes the experience of selfhood and agency. If a certain amount of 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyl tryptamine were to be added to it, the sober conscious brain activity would “tip” into being a drastically simpler system where neither selfhood nor agency would exist. Emotional valence would still exist, although much more uniform and high than before. Emotional valence is a basic parameter of the mind, about which people of the early 21st century are as ignorant as people in the ancient world were about temperature. Is high temperature a supernatural property which emanates from the sun god, or is it a physics phenomenon? Here we enter a territory of incompetence much more grandiose than the inability to protect the environment or to figure out how to align social interactions. Subjective experiential mental function is known as consciousness or sentience. The various conscious experiential states are called “qualia”. Consciousness is, by definition, the only type of thing one can ever experience, yet it is mostly ignored by science, with excuses like “that which is subjective cannot be objectively studied”. However, when someone studies anything, they make use of their subjectivity. Notably, the most important property of experience, “valence”, or how good or bad something feels, can be placed on an axis from negative to positive. Almost but not quite entirely unlike a thermometer scale.The Qualia Research Institute, the QRI, is a newly formed group of people in the United States. On more reflection however, this is going to be just like the role of women in most societies over most of history. It was as “natural” for women to conform to the wishes of men as it is for people today to conform to the agendas of corporations and nations. We simply have to conform in order to make a living. Autonomy and free choice are no absolutes.Creative solutions to these thorny issues are most successful in the form of comedy, such as the sentient animal in Douglas Adam’s “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe”. The animal is genetically engineered to have as her final goal to become the dish of the day. It may be viewed as a parody on Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, where all societal problems have been solved by technocrats who allocate embryos to a variety of specialized artificial wombs, to produce an optimal mix of distinct categories of workers and managers. The babies are then collectively reared under exact protocols to give them the suitable attitudes for optimal performance as everything from janitor to CEO. Part 2.The Dilemma: Silicon is not real carbon or Follow the Money & the Power- Transhumanist Satire Qualia Productions 2019-05-23 | ”But, we were only going to give you an award!”An anonymous Swedish transhumanist of our acquaintance came up with the idea of awarding the first aligned human level AI with a gold medal in the spirit of the Nobel Prize. If our descendants become an upgraded form of human mind and body, the first one among them should go down in history more than the teams that did the necessary engineering. The initiative was forwarded by us to a number of AI alignment experts. This sort of thing comes quite naturally to Swedes, obsessed as they are with prizes as emotional relief from that bitter arctic cold. There is a Royal Academy for this purpose, severely dysfunctional but nonetheless able to award Bob Dylan with the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature. “How many roads…”Our benefactor imagined the Nobel Peace Prize as the inspiration more than that for Literature. Granted, it would be quite impressive if an AI wrote something like “Moby Dick”, but what we’d like here is a 100% artificially embodied person capable and committed to improving humanity on a societal level with empathy as the guiding star. It would thus take much more than fake it till you make it on some chat channel, as in the classical “Turing-test” from 1950. The transhumanist spirit of it instead requires our historic robot to genuinely be a good person, one who fully understands the value of uncertainty. Someone the likes of whom are currently all too rare in this world. None of the experts were interested, however. Nick Bostrom instead discouraged the idea on the grounds that future intelligent AI might not appreciate tokens of social esteem. If we are anything to go by, we may confirm that Swedes indeed are slow on the uptake and that China seems to act with lightning speed on everything except privacy. But will that remain so forever? Could people from Sweden precipitate an existential risk for the political leadership of China? An “existential risk” is a risk of going extinct. Is there any way such a thing might occur? It would have to involve the development of some instrument of power capable of conferring as much decisive strategic advantage as the first nuclear weapons did for the USA in the 1940’s, and that Swedes would be somehow involved. Impossible? -I am Britta. -And I am Abbe. We are two ordinary Swedish administrators who had very little insight into high technology. Vi valde att göra en svensk version av filmtemat ”How far is the nearest star” från Cody´s Lab fast vi gjorde om det i en annan skala. I vår skalmodell är jorden stor som ett sandkorn och solen är som en ärta. Hela vårt solsystem får plats på en fotbollsplan och Nasas Voyager 1 och 2 hamnar strax utanför planen. Ett ljusår är i vår modell 50 kilometer. För att komma till den närmaste stjärnan måste vi åka 21 mil. Vi startar i Stockholm och hamnar då i Kumla. Och på den vägen är det, från plats till plats. Del 2 - Stjärnresan eller Avstånd i rymden Qualia Productions 2018-11-08 | Här är del 2 i vår filmtrilogi. I del 1 visade vi hur allt började och placerade ut vårt solsystem längs med en fotbollsplan. Nu i del 2 är det dags att resa iväg på semester från Stockholm och vår närmsta stjärna Proxima Centauri kommer hamna i Kumla enligt vår skalmodell av avstånden i rymden. I Kumla besöker vi Kvartorpshögen som är Sveriges största industriminne och består av ungefär 35 miljoner kubikmeter slagg från tidig oljeskifferindustri, och med konstprojektet Konst på hög, utnämnd till Sveriges märkligaste sevärdhet. Till toppen leder ”Trappan”, som ingår i konstsamlingen, med sina 427 trappsteg och är ett populärt träningsställe. Sedan tar vi oss vidare till Alpha Centauri A och B på en plats nära Kumla Kriminalvårds anstalt, som för övrigt har 420 platser. Sen går färden vidare till Göta kanal där vi placerar Barnards stjärna.Nästa etappmål är dubbelstjärnan Sirius A och B som hamnar i Uddevalla, närmare bestämt vid Kurörds skalbankar, ett naturreservat som består av snäck- och musselskal. Efter många många mil till kommer vi till dubbelstjärnan Procyon A och B som hamnar vid Haftstensklippan med vidunderlig utsikt och sist men inte minst placerar vi ut stjärnan Vega. Där får vi vara med om en fantastisk golfprestation på Orust golfklubb i Morlanda. Del 3 - Stjärnresan eller Avstånd i rymden Qualia Productions 2018-11-08 | Nu har vi kommit fram till 3:e och sista delen i vår filmtrilogi. I del 1 visade vi hur allt började och placerade ut vårt solsystem längs med en fotbollsplan. I del 2 startar vi vår resa och placerar ut stjärnor vid vackra platser och speciella sevärdheter i Sverige. Denna del har vi tillägnat vår favoritkomiker Douglas Adams genom att placera ut 3 viktiga stjärnor som figurerar i hans böcker. Det är Arcturus som är känd som hemvist för den Arcturiska megaåsnan som blev omkull pratad av att Djupa Tanken. Den placerar vi i Barrevik på västra Orust. Nästa stjärna på tur är Ursa Minor Beta där förlaget som ger ut Liftarens Guide till galaxen ligger. Nu räcker inte Sverige till längre så behöver en båt för att korsa Atlanten på längden för att komma dit. Vi hamnar då i Argentina. Sist men verkligen inte minst är Betelgeuse. Från den stjärnan kommer Ford Prefect, Artur Dents vän och följeslagare på alla äventyr i rymden. För att nå den stjärnan måste vi korsa hela stilla havet, för att slutligen hamna i Peking i Kina. I vår skalmodell där solen är som en ärta är Betelgeuse stor som en luftballong. Där tar vår resa slut men om vi ändå vill fortsätta till Trantor i vintergatans centrum och det supermassiva svarta hålet måste vi resa ca 37 varv runt jorden. Och vill vi ta oss till Terminus på andra sidan galaxen blir det 100 varv till runt jorden. Dessa planeter finns inte på riktigt, de är från Stiftelse-trilogin, av vår favoritförfattare Isaac Asimov, men det är lika långt för det. Part three - The Star Trip or Distance in space Qualia Productions 2018-11-08 | This is part 3 in the trilogy. It is dedicated to our favorite comedian, Douglas Adams. We place 3 stars of Hitch Hiker’s Guide fame. Closest to Earth is Arcturus, known for the Arcturian mega-donkey which got its’ legs talked off by Deep Thought. Then comes Ursa Minor Beta, home of the company publishing the Hitch Hiker’s Guide. Here, Sweden is no longer big enough as we’d need a ship to take us all the way along the Atlantic Ocean to Argentina.Last but certainly not least is Betelgeuse. From its’ system came Ford Prefect, Arthur Dent’s companion during improbable adventures in space. To reach it we must keep going from Argentina all the way across the Pacific Ocean to Beijing, China. Appropriately the world’s number one country houses the model’s biggest star. In the model where our sun is the size of a pea, Betelgeuse has a diameter of around ten meters, the size of a hot air balloon. That wraps up our star trip, but if we were to keep going all the way to Trantor at the center of the Milky Way, we’d have to circumnavigate the Earth 37 times. To reach Terminus, at the “other end” of the galaxy, add another 100 laps. These places are fictional planets featured in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy. Fictional or not, it would take quite an effort to get there. Actually, the fiction itself is in space in the form of a copy of “Foundation” laser-written into a disc of silica glass. Part two - The Star Trip or Distance in space Qualia Productions 2018-11-08 | Here comes part two. In part one we showed how it all started and how we got the solar system model lined up alongside a soccer field in South Stockholm. Now it’s time to go on a vacation trip by car from Stockholm towards West Sweden. Our nearest star, Proxima Centauri, finds a location at the top of Kvarntorp Mound which is a 35 million cubic meter heap of shale residue remaining after oil extraction and recently designated as the biggest industrial landmark in Sweden. The mound has been turned into a sculpture park voted to be the most singular sight in the country. The 427-step wooden staircase leading towards the top is itself one of the artworks and has become a popular spot for exercise. After Proxima it’s on to Alpha Centauri A and B on location as close as legally possible to the “Kumla” maximum security prison housing up to 420 inmates. Further on west of Kumla the highway crosses the idyllic waterway “Göta Kanal”. Right next to that intersection is our location for the red dwarf Barnard’s Star.Our next pick is not the closest dwarf after Barnard’s Star, for there are several and all of them quite dim. Instead we move on to the doublet Sirius A and B, which is the brightest star in the skies of Earth. Location for it is a protected ice age relic: the shell banks at Kuröd in the town of Uddevalla. At significant distance on from Sirius we come to another bright double star, Procyon, placed on the scenic view point “Hafstensklippan”. The last one in this part is Vega, a bright star very visible from Sweden since it sits near the Earth’s north celestial pole. We did a Swedish version of the video "How Far is the Nearest Star" from the youtube channel Cody’s Lab. The model of the sun is the size of a pea and that of the Earth the size of a small sand grain. Our entire solar system can be lined up alongside a soccer field. The NASA Voyager probes are off the field but just by a few meters. One light year equals 50 kilometers. It then takes 210 km to get to the nearest star. With a starting point at the soccer field in southern Stockholm, this brings us to the vicinity of Kumla.
