Today (April 23) marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. As a *pivotal* slice of 8-bit history, I felt it's something which had to be commended.

Spindizzy Worlds (Amiga/SNES): Puzzling Beyond Brutality - Beyond The Scanlines #074

Beyond The Scanlines 2022-03-27 | Creating a new game by taking elements of others and smashing them together certainly resulted in some great titles back in the day - like the original Spindizzy.

But it's one which may have turned some off by the extreme challenge, something which its sequel Spindizzy Worlds hopes to mitigate. Whether it succeeds is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, checking out the releases to the Amiga and Super NES as captured from original hardware.

Beyond The Scanlines 2021-08-14 | The announcement of games to be added in the update to the Switch Online service in July 2021 certainly had a polarising response. For me though? I took a double take on discovering there was a Super NES port of C64 classic Bomb Uzal.

And so it's time to look at Bomb Uzal, from it's original Commodore 64 release the ports on both the Amiga and Super NES.

Time for a filler, with an extract from a recent stream where I sat down to try out the Soulless Special Edition for the first time. Being a stream, things aren't as tightly edited (outside of one cut) as you'd expect from an episode of Beyond The Scanlines, but some may prefer the off-the-cuff approach.

Gameplay was streamed from an Ultimate64 Elite (using a real 8580 SID for audio)

Beyond The Scanlines 2021-06-12 | The rise of the First Person Shooter during the early 1990's was a significant leap for gaming tech. Whilst Wolfenstein 3D and Doom ruled the roost on PC's, console gamers weren't entirely left out.

Whilst ports of those PC classics were available, original titles would also make an appearance. Such as Bloodshot, a Mega Drive and Mega CD release developed by Domark and published by Acclaim in 1994.

Beyond The Scanlines 2021-05-21 | The original Skyfox impressed a lot* of people upon its release for the Apple II line in 1984. Leaving enough of an impact to not only be ported to many other home computers, but to receive a sequel several years later.

That sequel, 1987's Skyfox II: The Cygnus Conflict is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, checking out whether taking the Fox from the Skies into Space manages to keep up with the expectations of its illustrious predecessory.

Beyond The Scanlines #047: Ys: The Vanished Omens (Sega Master System)

Beyond The Scanlines 2020-11-28 | Role Playing Games can be considered a staple of gaming, with plenty of them being released over the years. Those most tend to focus on the slower-paced titles, for those looking for more frantic experiences, Action RPGs are of course available too.

One of the lesser appreciated, but pivotal series has to be Falcom's Ys, which first made its way to Western audiences with a port to the Sega Master System in 1988. It's this port which is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, exploring what makes this gem tick.
