One of the challenges in having dedicated tastes, as I do with shooters is wanting to enjoy them in the best way possible.
Which usually means ditching the gamepad for an arcade stick. As you'd expect for such specialised gear, the prices tend to be high on the secondary market… ruling them out for many players.
If you're a handy sort of person, you could easily build your own and be sorted.

Arcade Games and the Atari 2600 go together like crackers and cheese, with a fine legacy of great translations of arcade classics being released back in the day, along with recent times.
One of the more impressive titles to come out in the last few years is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, being Galagon by Champ Games which not only squeezes Galaga into the humble 2600, but adds a few surprises into the mix as well!

New platforming games on the C64 have tended to focus on trying to match the experiences offered on other machines, over defining new experiences. But with its character-switching mechanics, Below The Tower's Runn 'n' Gunn shows there's plenty of ways in which platformers can leap to new heights!

I'm always excited to see new games for classic micro computers and consoles, especially if they try to do something a little different from the norm. Icon64's Battle Kingdom (published by Psytronik Software) aims to deliver a light Action RPG experience, but does it success? That's what this episode of Beyond The Scanlines aims to find out…

For most, the shmup is something which I'm sure can be seen as being run of the mill, especially on 8-bit micros. But sometimes, you get a release which shows there's plenty of tricks you can get out of it - as we'll see with Sarah Jane Avory's Soul Force, published for the C64 by Protovision.

One genre which has been sorely lacking when it comes to new games on microcomputers is the run & gun platformer. Delta's Shadow from Sanchez Crew tries to bridge that gap, making for a rather contribution to the Spectrum Next's growing library.

#BeyondTheScanlines #SpectrumNext #DeltasShadowGames Which Helped Me Survive 2020!Beyond The Scanlines2021-01-16 | The Year That Was (and shall not be named again) was certainly one of downer moods. But as always, gaming more than ever was a way to find moments to raise one's spirits. Which brings me to this pack of games which very much helped do that - with a mix of big name releases, to exciting indies and of course plenty of old-school joy - it's some of the gems I most enjoyed through the year.
Hopefully you might find a title or two to check out for yourself!

Those most tend to focus on the slower-paced titles, for those looking for more frantic experiences, Action RPGs are of course available too.
One of the lesser appreciated, but pivotal series has to be Falcom's Ys, which first made its way to Western audiences with a port to the Sega Master System in 1988. It's this port which is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, exploring what makes this gem tick.

Specifically the Vanishing Point 3D style of them. But for Spectrum Next owners, that gap has been filled with the release of Bikers, a new release from Cavern Games.
