Ask anyone who was around for the launch of the Super NES, and they'll certainly recall their memories of seeing F-Zero in action for the first time.
Now some 30 years later, ZX Spectrum owners get to experience those same thrills with Voxeltower's Space Racing, and this episode dives in to see if it's more than a tech demo.

Today (April 23) marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. As a *pivotal* slice of 8-bit history, I felt it's something which had to be commended.
Instead of nostalgic gazing though, I wanted to impart why I feel it's a machine that any vintage micro enthusiast should be enjoying.

Can Icon64's Arcade Daze serve as a substitute for when you can't get to your local establishment for a gaming fix? Or is this a tribute which lacks enough tokens?

The release of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom in the 1990s inspired many to push older systems to the limit to replicate the frenetic first person action those games offered.
But it wasn't until 2021 and the release of GMG's Final Assault for Atari's 8-bit micros that we finally have a first person experience for an 8-bit which is just as jaw dropping.

When it comes to new releases for vintage systems, I tend to prefer seeing new games over ports. But sometimes there are ports which certainly get you interested, and this episode of Beyond The Scanlines checks out two of them: Arlasoft's take on Galaga for the Commodore 64, and Highriser's Asteroids RX for the ZX Spectrum.

Time for a filler, with an extract from a recent stream where I sat down to try out the Soulless Special Edition for the first time. Being a stream, things aren't as tightly edited (outside of one cut) as you'd expect from an episode of Beyond The Scanlines, but some may prefer the off-the-cuff approach.
Gameplay was streamed from an Ultimate64 Elite (using a real 8580 SID for audio)

● Mega Drive: monsterjoysticks.com/retro-gaming-joystick-kits/mega-drive-genesis-retro-joystick-kits
● PC Engine: monsterjoysticks.com/retro-gaming-joystick-kits/pc-engine-retro-joystick-kits
One of the challenges in having dedicated tastes, as I do with shooters is wanting to enjoy them in the best way possible.
Which usually means ditching the gamepad for an arcade stick. As you'd expect for such specialised gear, the prices tend to be high on the secondary market… ruling them out for many players.
If you're a handy sort of person, you could easily build your own and be sorted.
For those of us who aren't, there is one option for you - the kits provided by Monster Joysticks. Which is the focus of the Beyond The Scanlines Extra - building up the Mega Drive & PC Engine kits, then trying them out with an assortment of games to see how they feel.

Arcade Games and the Atari 2600 go together like crackers and cheese, with a fine legacy of great translations of arcade classics being released back in the day, along with recent times.
One of the more impressive titles to come out in the last few years is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, being Galagon by Champ Games which not only squeezes Galaga into the humble 2600, but adds a few surprises into the mix as well!

New platforming games on the C64 have tended to focus on trying to match the experiences offered on other machines, over defining new experiences. But with its character-switching mechanics, Below The Tower's Runn 'n' Gunn shows there's plenty of ways in which platformers can leap to new heights!

I'm always excited to see new games for classic micro computers and consoles, especially if they try to do something a little different from the norm. Icon64's Battle Kingdom (published by Psytronik Software) aims to deliver a light Action RPG experience, but does it success? That's what this episode of Beyond The Scanlines aims to find out…

One of the lesser appreciated, but pivotal series has to be Falcom's Ys, which first made its way to Western audiences with a port to the Sega Master System in 1988. It's this port which is the focus of this episode of Beyond The Scanlines, exploring what makes this gem tick.
