✮ Thank you! ✮Horror for horror fans • Midwestern Gothic by Scott ThomasTypical Books of Terror2024-09-27 | Horror for Kill Creek fans! If you liked the first novel by Scott Thomas, you will find some of our favourite fictional authors peppered into Midwestern Gothic.
I had a great time reading this and huge thank you to Inkshares for sending it along - thanks, Noah!
For each of the four novellas, I talk about how each related to a specific author in Kill Creek. You may recall; Sam McGarver, TC Moore, Sebastian Cole and Daniel Slaughter. Authors that remind us all of real writers we know and love. This was the world created in Kill Creek and it is deepened here, having work by these authors woven into each story.
From the jacket:
In The Door in the Field, a construction worker's bad day becomes a far worse night when drinks at an off-the-books bar send him down an unforeseeably bloody path. In The Boy in the Woods, something evil has infected the counselors at a summer camp, and a young boy will have to do anything he can to survive the night. In One Half of a Child’s Face, a woman spying on her daughter and ex-husband notices an odd painting hanging in an empty apartment . . . one that seems to call to the building’s children. In Wear Your Secret Like a Stone, a big-box clerk discovers that her book pick for a Halloween display echoes a dark secret hidden beneath the idyllic facade of her hometown. With this collection, Scott Thomas digs his hands into the soil of the American heartland and establishes himself as a master of Midwestern Gothic.

✮ Thank you! ✮Horror Galore! • dReadCon Literary Festival 2024Typical Books of Terror2024-09-22 | Last weekend I was at dDread Con Literary Festival in Waterloo and - wow - was it an amazing time. 50 horror authors, some great panels and hundreds of books to be had!
This is truly the first event of its kind in Canada - and if you are familiar with Shock Stock or maybe even the dealers room at a large horror authors convention, it is like that for just books. Sure, there were a few adjacent bookish goods and wares, but almost all of the tables were books and authors. Sponsored by Eerie River Publishing and Rue Morgue Magazine, it was a perfect event that I hope will repeat annually (or more often) for a very long time! More here - dreadconcan.com

✮ Thank you! ✮Heads Will Roll • Summer Camp Horror Book ReviewTypical Books of Terror2024-09-02 | Heads Will Roll lives up to the cover and I enjoyed this quite a bit. It's skews a little young though not quite YA, but maybe not as brutal as I had hoped.
Heads Will Roll by Josh Winning 2024, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Penguin amzn.to/3YY6Lre Cover design by Vi-An Nguyen
I think every time I read a camp slasher I go back to Friday the 13th or Sleepaway Camp as far as film goes and in books you know... I really only have Con Season by Adam Caesar to equate this to. If you know of any other campground in the cabins pine needle strewn pathway camp slashers that live up to those, let me know. I've also likened it as well to Supermassive games like The Quarry so I highly recommend that if you haven't played it yet or if you did enjoy it, definitely check out Heads Will Roll.

✮ Thank you! ✮I am bad at YouTube • BookTubeTypical Books of Terror2024-08-15 | This is the story of a girl who was not that good at youtube, and when she was bad, she was horrid...
(We will be back to normal booktube by Sunday with a look at new horror books coming out in September.)
Rachel from the Shades of Orange had a brilliant idea with this tag. I may not do many tags, but she does even less! I not only had a laugh with some parts of her video, but she had me nodding in agreement, or yelling at clouds as the topic can be subtly dramatic for me. Just when I thought I was over it, Olly did this over at CriminOlly and it was also a very good video. Again, subtly dramatic for me! They are both very good YouTubers with very good channels. Want to see an actual bad booktuber? Well step right up!
Maybe this was somewhat based on Daniel Greene’s The Worst BookTuber on Youtube, but I didn’t finish watching his video for whatever reason.

✮ Thank you! ✮12 Tales to Terrify! • The Boris Karloff Horror AnthologyTypical Books of Terror2024-08-10 | Not long ago I picked up The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology which is a 1960s book put out by souvenir press. The book as advertised contains horror stories of the time chosen by Boris Karloff of horror movie fame. Aside from two outliers most of the stories range from the early 1930s to the late 1950s and of course includes an earlier tale by HP Lovecraft entitled The Haunter of the dark and an Edgar Allan Poe story entitled The Cask of Amontillado.
Some of the authors here have names that filled me with joy like August Derleth and Robert Bloch. I was very curious to read an entry by Roald Dahl. The surprises, to me, were stories by Theodore Sturgeon entitled The Graveyard Reader and John Jakes’ The Opener of the Crypt which Boris Karloff highlights in his introduction. I very much enjoyed the first story in the book The 13th Floor by Frank Gruber.
In this video I will talk about some of the stories very briefly without any real description so you can enjoy these stories and discover them for yourself; but I do show the artwork that accompanied each chapter - artwork that may be by the same Illustrator as the cover which is the enigmatic S.R. Boldero. For more on the artist, I read a lovely blog here: bearalley.blogspot.com/2009/11/s-r-boldero.html

✮ Thank you! ✮True Horror! True Crime • Graphic NovelsTypical Books of Terror2024-07-23 | True crime is the most graphic of horror - yet graphic novels are one of the most balanced ways to tell these stories. Perhaps it is the constraints to the page, or the smaller amount of text for lurid details, and in the few book I talk about today the limited palette of colours; often black and white.
While these are stories we know well - Dahmer, Gein, Ridgway - I found these books told it in a new and arresting way. I am on the look out for more. With the most recent addition to my small collection, Torso, I get to go back in time to the most wicked cold case of all, The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. I got my copy here: amzn.to/46jRmTD or find it on BookShop bookshop.org/a/12297/9781506730257.
I'll have a review or discussion soon enough but this comes highly recommended! Have you read this or do you know of a true crime graphic novel I should pick up?

✮ Thank you! ✮The Haunting of Velkwood • Horror Book ReviewTypical Books of Terror2024-07-15 | The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendolyn Kiste was almost an instant buy for me. I chose this book entirely because of the summary. It did not hurt that it was written by a three-time Bram Stoker award winner and had a very cool cover. While I am not a fan of yellow, I appreciated how it has this yellow police tape feel without being actual police tape. You get a sense of being barred from seeing what the picture is of on account of the text. Or the yellow of the lines painted down the middle of a road. But the actual road is not quite there. After reading the novel, the cover takes on only a slightly deeper meaning, but it certainly caught my eye and played well with the summary.
While writing style never usually influences my choice of a book, I really do like a strong narrative so that's what this is; it's written in the first person present tense so nothing overly experimental or jarring. I find the first person present really works if you want to take somebody on a journey and that is exactly where we go back to Velkwood...

New stuff from authors we know and love, new names for us to discover, and every single one either a camp slasher or small town terror - Hollywood is a small town, right?
Two of these win 'best horror book cover of the month' awards.
I also get to see that a book I am very interested in just came out - from the authors of Old Country, Matt Query and Harrison Query have Wilderness Reform out now. So, that is on my list but I may have to do a poll to decide on another since they all sound so good to me. Have any of these ended up on your shelf already?

✮ Thank you! ✮Withered • YA horror novelTypical Books of Terror2024-06-17 | Withered is a young adult hometown horror novel by Canadian author A.G.A Wilmot. The cover and summary of this book sounded so perfect to me! I checked to see if it was YA but it seemed to be a straight-up haunted house, haunted town, haunted past coming-of-age horror so I was sold. Lots of horror stories involving kids, teens, or coming of age aren't YA books so I figured this would be a fit. When ECW asked if I wanted a review copy, I jumped on it, so thank you ECW!
From the back cover: After the tragic death of their father and surviving a life-threatening eating disorder, 18-year-old Ellis moves with their mother to the small town of Black Stone, seeking a simpler life and some space to recover. But Black Stone feels off; it’s a disquieting place surrounded by towns with some of the highest death rates in the country. It doesn’t help that everyone says Ellis’s new house is haunted — everyone including Quinn, a local girl who has quickly captured Ellis’s attention. And Ellis has started to believe what people are saying: they see pulsing veins in their bedroom walls and spectres in dark corners of the cellar. Together, Ellis and Quinn dig deep into Black Stone’s past and soon discover that their town, and Ellis’s house in particular, is the battleground in a decades-long spectral war, one that will claim their family — and the town — if it’s allowed to continue.

I'll talk a little bit about what I'm reading right now, what I just read, and about some reviews forthcoming. ✮ Thank you! ✮My Booktube Identity • Is horror a style?Typical Books of Terror2024-04-28 | What is my style of booktube? A booktube identity, as it were. A really good question to which I ask: is horror a style? I mean, on the surface level you could say there is a horror aesthetic that many fans embrace, and skulls often find their place in our decor. Horror novels and being a horror reader may not, however, be as obvious - especially when our bookshelves when only containing books look a lot like any other genre fan.
So, for a little fun thinkpiece, we delve into six questions about what sort of booktube channel we have here.
Questions discussed here are::
1. What do you want your channel to be known for? 2. What content will people find on your channel? 3. What is the most represented genre of books? 4. What book are you known for championing? 5. What author is regularly featured on your channel? 6. What can people expect in the future? (reveal some exciting plans) 7. Tag people and state 'what you know them for?'. (wherein I just leave this an open tag)

✮ Thank you! ✮Rural Victorian Dark Folk Horror • Grey Dog by Elliott GishTypical Books of Terror2024-04-13 | Like a dark and twisted Anne of Green Gables, this book was a welcome addition for me; and very well written for a debut novel. I was happily surprised at how much I related to the very odd and “unlikable” main character Ada Byrd. There was a great balance of late-Victorian references, flk horror tone, and modern sensibility, as well as a cozy atmosphere created by the diary style of the book. The ideas of intimate desire, reckless abuse and longing for friendship were so blurred at times, that there was a lovely sort of delirium created for the reader which mirrored the iceberg tip of the madness forming in Ada.
Absolutely beautiful reading in Grey Dog, by Elliott Gish. I'd wanted to read this and was so pleased when ECW reached out with a review copy ~ thank you, Claire! While perusing catalogs of new books coming out Grey Dog caught my eye because of the contradictory nature of its cover. I was hoping that it would have something to do with sort of a body horror or some animalistic nature transformation and I wasn't exactly right although there is some sort of body horror... if you count the use of dead animals and a little skull within the story. The stark nature of what almost looks like a woodcut lent itself to the description of this book taking place in the 1900s so I caught a “botanical dark academia” flavour just from the illustration on the front.
Much to my delight the author is from the East Coast and did find inspiration in Lucy Maud Montgomery and the Anne of Green Gables, so if you ever wanted that in horror form, this is one for you!
This is the debut novel by Elliott Gish and I am looking forward to more.
From the back cover copy: “The year is 1901, and Ada Byrd ― spinster, schoolmarm, amateur naturalist ― accepts a teaching post in isolated Lowry Bridge, grateful for the chance to re-establish herself where no one knows her secrets. She develops friendships with her neighbours, explores the woods with her students, and begins to see a future in this tiny farming community. Her past ― riddled with grief and shame ― has never seemed so far away...”

✮ Thank you! ✮Spring Haul of Horror and Esoterica • Stellar finds at Apport BooksTypical Books of Terror2024-04-08 | It is now our annual trip to Apport Books in sunny Emmaus, Pennsylvania. While I picked up books from other stores, they all pale compared to the selection, vibe, and dedication to genre fiction that my favourite bookstore does. Visit Apport in the flesh, or remote-view a selection of books on offer at instagram.com/apportusedbooks/.
17 books hauled, about half horror, and all perfect additions to my library.
While this is a plain haul video, I may do another vlog-style video next year where we visit not only the best bookstore in the galaxy but Dino's Pizza Teria too.
I have the original folk horror starring Cotton Mather now! Not only are there some Frank Belknap Long and Jack Ketchum books in here, but there are cults, true crime, horror masters, and governmental disasters... and poetry. It is all lost without a little poetry.

✮ Thank you! ✮Three good horror books that were just not for me • Horror Reading MisstepsTypical Books of Terror2024-03-16 | While I am not in the habit of posting poor reviews, I wanted to talk about these three books - even if I didn't like them much. I’ve rarely posted reviews of books that were not for me mostly because I chose narrowly from a narrow genre: horror. It is not to say they were poorly written at all, they are all good. I had waited for Waif and am so happy to own a copy; Nineteen Little Stab Wounds was a delightful find; My Throat an Open Grave is just a wonderfully complete package from pillar to post and beautifully written.
They are all dark, twisty, horrific or weird. But... They were just not for me at all.
Before I get too deep into that: here is the link to the radio drama version of Sticks by Karl Edward Wagner zbs.org/audio/Sticks.mp3
Now, be it the recency, or the fact that I wanted to like these books so much - I also still want to share them because I know they do and will have fans!
Especially My Throat and Open Grave. Biblical connotations of the title aside, it was a Puritan nightmare! It's a really beautifully written folk horror book and beautifully bound.
The one review I did edit heavily was for My Throat an Open Grave where I felt I was reading a subtweet for a hundred pages or heavily disguised Christian propaganda. It was a strange feeling because they have teen troubles that are not resolved in a wholesome way, the outcome is the opposite of an after-school special, and the whole problem started because of a cult-like Christian town. I am still not sure why I felt I was being sold snake oil throughout. On the other side of that, I felt the pandering to angsty teens was a little over the top and something I thought we had left behind over a decade ago. I will say the twist was unique and I loved how revenge played a big part in the first big resolution here, but I still felt at odds with the central theme as I came away with ‘women are bad and you should feel bad’ when I am sure the opposite was intended.
Anyhow! I'll be reading a few great books to come, and The Haunting of Velkwood! Thank you to everyone who voted!

✮ Thank you! ✮Unboxing February • Preorder Horror and Review copies!Typical Books of Terror2024-03-01 | My preorder, book of the month, and review copy horror novel stash had built up to eight books since November. So, here we are at the end of the month with a little unboxing. This also marks the end of my read-what-you-own challenge. I'll be updating that more deeply in another video as I did learn a lot over the last few months. I hope to incorporate more reading from my shelves and less book buying going forward, for sure, but in a subtle way.
Here we have some excellent books! A patron pick that bookworms voted on - thank you, everyone! That is 'My Throat an Open Grave' by Tori Bovalino and is available here : amzn.to/3ThO4LR

✮ Thank you! ✮Disturbing Books Iceberg • Horror in the murky depths?Typical Books of Terror2024-02-26 | Disturbing books are so often synonymous with horror fiction. While there are classics, nonfiction, memoirs and other genres that are 'disturbing' I've found horror tends to populate the tops and bottoms of these iceberg images that are popular online. Is there a level below, sinking deeper than the murky depths? I would say there is...
I recommend In A Lonely Place amzn.to/3OXLDM5 for those who want to remain in the top two levels of books like this.
There is the original version (I finally found it again!) of the image here imgur.com/a/3Y6UB5L as was posted by one 'shyplasterlord' on reddit a few years ago. It was in a thread on hundreds of them, but this iceberg floated to the top as it were :)

✮ Thank you! ✮Culling the herd • A little horror book unhaulTypical Books of Terror2024-02-03 | I am culling the shelf in this video. Some of these I liked and want to pass on, some were not for me and one... I did not even read.
Most un-haul videos feature tens of books, or over a hundred. I simply don't buy books like that I suppose, and have six to talk about. These are not slam reviews either, but honest points as to why I am setting these books free, to be hunted by others in the wild.

✮ Thank you! ✮NEW Horror Books Coming Out This February • Houses, Howls and Highways!Typical Books of Terror2024-01-28 | So many horror novels are coming out this February, and quite a few books caught my eye. Some are fun, some are a little intense and a lot of thrillers dot the list. Half of the books seem to have a house on the cover which is always a big draw for me! A few splatterpunk authors, a few thriller and eco-horror books - a nice mix of new books to read!
Hunted Highways Midnight on Beacon Street The House of Last Resort We Ate the Dark Cymbals Eat Guitars Among the Living Fractured Fables The Hollow Dead What Feasts at Night Island Witch My Throat an Open Grave Eynhallow Bored Gay Werewolf

✮ Thank you! ✮The Only One Left • My first Riley Sager horror book reviewTypical Books of Terror2024-01-25 | If this isn't a nouveau gothic, I don't want to know what is. Truly. I had a lot of fun with this and if you are not having fun with fiction then... Pick up a copy here: amzn.to/48OdWoa - I may stick to pronouncing it Say-Guhr! I've heard a few interviews since and this is how it is said almost always when people speak with him.
The title of this book and the cover combined caught my eye. I'm not a huge fan of this orangish red and blue color combination but I do like a book with a house on the cover. The Only One Left as a title evokes a sort of gothic feel, some sort of familicide perhaps had gone on and that turned out to be true. The front cover with its colors evoked the title of a short story from ages ago ‘Orange is for Anguish Blue for Insanity’ and I figured this would have to do with some sort of perhaps unreliable narrator which wasn't exactly the case. But be that as it may, the cover and the title of this book along with some of the pedigree of the author did its work to entice me to read it. I'd never read any Riley Sager and I figured this would be a good spot to start. Will I read more Riley Sager? Maybe. I have already been tempted!

✮ Thank you! ✮Horror Books • New releases for January 2024 (Rosemary’s Baby?!)Typical Books of Terror2024-01-14 | Here are some of the top new horror books out for January 2024. Okay, Rosemary's Baby is a reprint - but what a reprint it is!
Here is a short clutch of books that caught my eye for January, starting with a few from Horror Writers Association authors. See more like that over at horror.org/newreleases/. There are not too many books coming out in January 2024 that really caught my eye. Certainly, if you look at some publishers lists there are more, but nothing that really strikes me as good old fashioned horror. I think we are all reeling a little from the speed at which 2023 seemed to creep up on us, shake us in its jaws and toss us ina corner. That is, if you read the news. If you were blissful and only the main character in tour own story I have feeling it was a rather quiet passing of twelve regular months. I was half of one, and half the other. Here are some very interesting books coming out soon, and some out already...
-Shadows & Ink: Mastering the art of Horror Writing and Publishing Volume 1 by Joe Mynhardt -Metal Demon by Julie Hiner -Perverted Little Freak by Rick Wood -Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin with an Introduction by Chuck Palahniuk and afterword by R. L. Stine -The Bad Weather Friend by Dean Koontz -The Best Horror of the Year Volume 15, edited by Ellen Datlow -A Place for Vanishing by Ann Fraistat -The Winslow Sisters by Michael Aronovitz

✮ Thank you! ✮Top Ten 2023 Books • 30 Horror Books Ranked!Typical Books of Terror2024-01-11 | Did you read a lot this past year? Or, like me, somewhere around a book every week or two? Did you read a book a month? Twelve books a year is the honest average and the healthy challenge ~ so many of us here on booktube read so much that some even dip into triple digits. It is all well and good, especially when you get the fun of ranking them to ferret out the top ten!
While my goal is still around 30 books, I do hope to read more. Is that perverse? After admitting a book a month is the healthy pace? When I look at how quick I can devour a book I am enjoying, I could easily read a book every three days... but there is more to life than great horror novels. There is meeting great horror authors! I had the pleasure of having met a few of the authors in my top ten ,so come along and see who they might have been!

✮ Thank you! ✮Where will horror reading take me in 2024? • 2023 Booktube WrapupTypical Books of Terror2023-12-26 | It has been a good year for horror, and while 2024 promises to be better, how will I get to it all while reading less books? To end 2023 I talk about social media and how I've been slowly ditching a lot of it, and podcasts. Between the fun that is making a horror film podcast on Dead Air, and this show which is a podcast itself (an award winning one at that), I listen to A Lot of podcasts. I also talk a little about stress and how I refuse to let it in the door... and kind of always have.
As well, what I am reading of late and what you think I ought to read! Have a great end to 2023 and may the start of 2024 find you curled up with a good book!

✮ Thank you! ✮Ten Wicked Horror Novellas • Short books I read in 2023Typical Books of Terror2023-12-03 | Here are some of the best novellas I read in 2023. While I am on the hunt for books on my shelf I have not read yet, I thought novellas would be a good bet. Turns out, I've nearly read them all! Not a mystery as to why; they are great and short easy reads. Looking for something to read in an afternoon? Here we are.
In the meantime, be sure to check out the new amusement park horror, Carni by R. Saint Claire! amzn.to/3sSt6ch as mentioned!
In horror literature, novellas are perfect additions to any collection. Their short and digestible length make them perfect for one sitting, giving readers instant immersion into chilling narratives. Novellas serve as a nuanced introduction to an author's style, allowing enthusiasts to traverse the macabre landscapes of renowned talents without having to invest time or money into a whole novel. Shorter work used to be more popular in previous centuries, and horror novellas emerge once again as new treasures, with a new-found literary sophistication, in my opinion, and offering enthusiasts a swift yet profound journey into the realms of dread.

✮ Thank you! ✮Night in the Lonesome October review • A relaxed ‘extreme’ horror novel?Typical Books of Terror2023-11-26 | I'd read a few ooky spooky books in October but the stand out novel was Night in the Lonesome October by Richard Laymon.
"There are others out there in the night, roaming the streets, lurking in the darkness―waiting to show Ed just how different his world could be. Some of them are enticing, like the beautiful girl who wants to teach Ed about the wonders of the night. Some are disturbing and threatening. Some are deadly…And in search of prey."
A wild ride, like most Laymon, but tempered with the soft hush of a chilly night wind, and footsteps through leaves on darkened streets.
Pick up a copy of Night in the Lonesome October here: amzn.to/3RbsA2a
I'd also read Blood Sugar and Dark Harvest - both excellent and books I will read again. Heck, all three were.

Also, I got a great shirt from @SynsBookNook and you should too!

✮ Thank you! ✮Farewell, new books: My final fall frenzyTypical Books of Terror2023-10-27 | The Merrickville Book Emporium and a charity sale at my work had a few really wonderful books for me this week! Then, I'll be on a book buying break for now.
On the 1st of November I'll choose the 25 books I'll be reading until... well, when I am done reading them I suppose. This is part of the 'Read what you own' challenge and it comes at a good time. For now, I'll show some of the wonderful books that ended up being part of my last book haul.
Merrickville itself is a perfect little Halloween town, but the real horror was finding a wrecked copy of Stephen King's Night Shift at a charity book sale. I wanted to mend it but can't just take in every stray I see...

Are any of these on your Halloween reading list or are there books you get to every year when the moon hits just right? Blood Sugar is my new annual read so I am curious about these things now!
I hope you found some spine-tingling inspiration in this year's Halloween reading list. Don't forget to give this video or post a star, and share this with friends who need bone-chilling book recommendations and deep dives into the world of dark literature.

✮ Thank you! ✮Enter Boogeyman: The introduction by Poppy Z. Brite alone is worth itTypical Books of Terror2023-10-10 | Enter Boogeyman was sent to me for review by Acheron International: Thank you, Melina! While I am late in getting the news and review out, there are still 4 days left to go if you want to fund the printing of this anthology.
Poppy Z. Brite wrote an illuminating introduction... and we will need it to see by down these dark halls wherein the boogeyman dwells. There are 18 stories about various boogeys ~ and four of the eighteen stories are reprints: the ones by Stephen King, Joe R. Lansdale, Ramsey Campbell, and Richard Chizmar. If the introduction and knowledge doesn't chase the haints away, it glows in th dark too, so that may light your way.
I also get into other boogeymen: from the recent film from a story by Stephen King and even The Halloween film franchise.
From wikipedia, "The Boogeyman is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman and a screen story by Beck and Woods. It is based on the 1973 short story of the same name, by Stephen King.[6] The film stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and David Dastmalchian." It is on Hulu and Disney and I rented it on Itunes.
We even get to talk once more about "Becoming the Boogeyman" by Richard Chizmar which is "genuinely chilling and something brand-new and exciting” (according to Stephen King) and comes out October 10 as the follow up to the successful "Chasing the Boogeyman". Chizmar also has an entry in Enter Boogeyman. It all came together after a little Carpenter movie marathon and I realized I'd not said, read or heard the word boogeyman more in the last few days than I had over my entire life. So, what's a few more! Shall we?

✮ Thank you! ✮The Night House • Jo Nesbø writes a small town horror!Typical Books of Terror2023-10-03 | The Night House by Jo Nesbø is the author's first foray into horror; and what a debut it is. A mad trip through small town Ballantyne ends up at the edges of sanity, if not beyond, but we start out innocently enough with two boys on a riverbank. From the first page to the last I had a great time, so thank you to Penguin Random House for sending this along, and Jo Nesbø for tackling the beautiful genre.

✮ Thank you! ✮The Devil’s Promise • A dark and demonic young adult horror novelTypical Books of Terror2023-10-03 | The Devil’s Promise by Celso Hurtado follows his debut novel The Ghost Tracks about paranormal investigator Erasmo Cruz. Dealing with his grandmother's illness and the continuous struggle with his roots, Erasmo takes on a case alone and it may be his darkest yet. Soon, a skeptical Vero joins him and with the help of a few locals, then old friends, he comes to terms with true evil and how it ties to his own past.
A young adult horror that speaks to seasoned fans of cult and occult horror like few can; Hurtado outdoes the first book in this series with a stellar sequel.
Thank you to InkShares for sending this advance reading copy along, and thank you to Celso for writing such a great book! Highly recommended, so let me know if you have read either book. The Devil's Promise comes out October 3, 2023, just in time for spooky season reading! amzn.to/46c6GAV

✮ Thank you! ✮The Grimmer • A dark urban YA horror with occult mysteriesTypical Books of Terror2023-10-02 | Vish has returned from boarding school to a life upside down in The Grimmer. The premise, the artwork, the music, and a debut in its demographic from Canadian author Naben Ruthnum; I was very excited for this. Thank you for ECW for sending the advance reading copy along! “The small-town mysteries … made modern with a dash of Stranger Things in this spine-tingling supernatural horror-thriller” as Google Books puts it and I would say a YA Grady Hendrix in the making as well. Also suitable for some middle-grade readers as there is no sex or brutality. It does mention drug use and alcoholism, though nothing overt is on the page.
A fine occult dark urban fantasy with horror elements and a fun way to start my autumn reads!
In my effort to avoid spoilers for this and Helpmeet, I had not heard the correct pronunciation of the authors name until after recording - so now I know! It seems to be Naben as 'nah-ben' which is much nicer than my 'nay-ben' and Ruthnum has more of a 'ruh' than a 'roo'.
From ECW “Bringing together scares, suspense, and body horror, The Grimmer is award-winning author Naben Ruthnum’s first foray into the young adult genre. Set in Kelowna, B.C., it follows metalhead highschooler Vish as he battles with an interdimensional invasion, all while dealing with being one of the only brown kids in a small town.
This gripping ride through the supernatural is loaded with vivid characters and frightening imagery. Although this is YA, Naben is such a great author and the book deals with complex issues such as grief, racism, and addiction that make it an accessible book for readers of all ages.”

It hasn't been available in Canada for over a decade, and since the restructuring, they have returned north of the united states border so I thought I'd try it out again.
Sure, they won't have the sort of horror I like to read most of the time, but there are loads of Stephen King and V. C. Andrews book club editions everywhere for a reason! So, here is my chance to get the BOTM back and make it horror.

First though, we went to a local library sale and Black Squirrel Books so I have a few new 'curios'. The prize so far is either topping off my V. C. ✮ Thank you! ✮Wasps in the Ice Cream is perfect summer horror • Addams CanadianaTypical Books of Terror2023-08-20 | While I am not normally on the hunt for definitive seasonal reads, I came upon what is the best summer horror I've read in ages. While not a slasher or rural terror that I normally associate with the blazing sun and ne'er do well teens, it has shades of both in the background. Wasps in the Ice Cream by Tim McGregor hit my love of dark Canadiana, Addams family oddities and just a plain good story.
I talk horror books; extreme horror, classic, slasher, gothic, and everything in between. Helping you find the next best horror book to read is the goal, and sharing new and old horror from my #booktube shelves and new releases is how! Horror, nonfiction and even true crime can be found here as I find that human beings are the scariest thing of all.
✮ Thank you! ✮Big haul of extreme and classic horror books!Typical Books of Terror2023-08-13 | I picked up a lot of books on my summer travels! Ira Levin, Brian Keene, Tim Lebbon, Tim Waggoner, Tim McGregor, and if I could come up with another 'Tim' horror author, I'd have bought their books too! And not to mention, Nicole Willson, who is not named Tim but alongside the aforementioned McGregor sent me a novella in the mail; both of which I read and loved.
Coming soon: Standalone reviews of 'Lure' and 'Wasps in the Ice Cream' as well as a second video for 'The Shadow Dancers of Brixton Hill'

✮ Thank you! ✮Why Nothing But Blackened Teeth sparks mixed reviews • Beyond the CoverTypical Books of Terror2023-07-15 | There were widely mixed reviews for Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw and I am very late to the game. I will always think of this as one of the best presented books in a long time - the cover art is beautiful. I also enjoyed the story, and the more I think on it, it strikes me as a manga-style, 90s teen horror cycle tale told with a far more modern take on language, with more than one cardboard cut-out character. But that is fine, since we have our hero Cat to guide us through this; whether it be in our search for true horror or fan-service easter-eggs.
Looking forward to reading their next book, The Salt Grows Heavy, sooner rather than this much later!
