📖 Challenges 1) Find Your Favorite Myth: “MG is a genre” It’s actually an age range! Genre refers more to the TYPE of story told, like fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary, etc. Thus you can have a Middle Grade novel set during WWI, but if someone asked you the genre, it would be “historical fiction”, not “middle grade” Challenge: Read a MG novel in your favorite genre
2) Sugar and Spice Myth: “MG is always light and fluffy” Challenge: Read a MG novel that handles a dark, serious, or important topic This doesn’t necessarily have to be sad—could be one that deals with feminism, LGBTQ+ identity, family relationships, instead of heavier ones like grief, illness, etc.
3) Boosting Voices Myth: “MG is homogenous in terms of the perspectives and backgrounds represented” Middle Grade is making great strides in the diversity of authors and stories published! Help that trend continue by supporting the work that’s already being done. Challenge: Read an #OwnVoices MG book (Ownvoices means the author is writing from a marginalized perspective they share with their character)
4) Bend the Rules Myth: “MG has a nonnegotiable set of characteristics” It seems like no one can agree on what exactly constitutes a middle grade book, which is one of the arguments for focusing less on the age range side of marketing and more on the genre- or content-based marketing. For the purposes of this challenge, here are some qualities often assumed to exist in every MG novel (you can think of others and use those instead!): Main character between 11 and 14 years old “Simple” writing style Plot that doesn’t get too scary, serious, dangerous, etc. Challenge: Read a MG novel that bends one or more of the typical definitions of middle grade *This challenge might lead you to a book that isn’t quite MG and that’s okay! There’s a lot of overlap and confusion about marketing categories and that’s the point of this challenge. **Also, this one will probably be a little easier for people with more MG experience, but it’s a very loosely defined challenge so beginners should be able to find something too!
5) Reader’s Choice Myth: “MG is only for little kids” It’s great when kids read middle grade! And it’s great when adults read middle grade. Basically, it’s great when ANYONE reads middle grade. You’re never too old for a good story ☺ Challenge: Choose ANY middle grade book you’re excited about reading!
