Q: How do I sign up to judge for 2025?
A: Fill out this form: https://forms.gle/vsA3qWjshTgVHgky6
Q: What’s the deadline to sign up?
A: I close judge signups on New Year’s Eve.
Q: What can I judge?
A: You may sign up to judge Fiction Only, Nonfiction Only, or Both Divisions.
Q: When does the schedule begin?
A: On January 1, I send the nomination lists to all of the judges. They have two weeks to research the titles and they may (but are not required to) vote for up to 20 titles they would like to see in each division they are judging. The first round begins on February 1.
Q: Do I have to be a YouTube creator to judge?
A: It’s not required, but we strongly request all judges make either videos or other social media posts after each round they judge (once I have announced the results).
Q: How many rounds do I have to judge?
A: That’s up to your schedule. If you want to judge the final round, however, you must judge at least one of the first three rounds. You may sign up for one round or all four, if you wish. I send an RSVP two weeks before each round. To be considered for that round, you have to send in the RSVP form. Keep in mind that the first round uses the most judges, so consider signing up for it, if you’re able.
Q: Does the BTP supply the books?
A: Unfortunately, no. We are a completely volunteer event. I have no budget to acquire and ship books. So judges are responsible for acquiring a copy to read on their own. (And yes, audiobooks are allowed.)
Q: How many books will I read, and how quickly?
A: Each round, you’ll be assigned to a group of 6 books (some of which you may have already read). You’ll have two months to read them and submit your rankings.
Q: Can I see the books I’d have to read before deciding whether to judge?
A: Unfortunately, no. With 250+ judges and 8 groups in each division, that presents a logistical impossibility for me.
Q: Can I read the books in my primary language if it’s not English?
A: No. We want everyone to be ranking the same original English edition, so we don’t include translated versions.
If you have any additional questions, please email me: robertsheard@booktubeprize.org
