For background, I pulled my miter saw away from the wall to do some cleaning and maintenance, and decided to upgrade the dust collection at the same time. It would be ideal to just install perfect dust collection for the entire workshop all in one shot, but I think for most of us it's a life-long process of gradual upgrades. This is a prototype, so I didn't see any reason to commit to a wooden structure just yet. Cardboard is free, easy to work with, and would last for many years.

▻ Video was recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phone, mostly in 4k 60fps, but some was in 8k 24fps so I could record details from farther away. Process: I filmed using a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phone at 4K 60 FPS, and for certain parts, 8K at 24fps. The audio was mostly recorded using a Rode Wireless Go with a Rode lavalier microphone. The video editing was done with CyberLink PowerDirector 20 (365). This video looks at a possible third result of using the impeller, whether by design or by chance, which is to break up wider wood shavings so they're easier for a dust collection system to handle.
I have been using my planer without an impeller since around mid-2020, both with a SHELIX helical cutterhead installed and with the stock knives. I have not had any issues, and don't plan on putting it back as long as my dust collector is available.

Now I know that this was definitely one of those trees. So, for all of the younger woodworkers out there, don't put nails in trees at your parents house. I'm going online to buy one now.Infinity vs Whiteside for Flattening End GrainThe Snekker Show2022-02-06 | My goal was to determine which of these two high-quality router bits would provide the smoothest outcome when planing end grain, especially end grain that's prone to fuzziness and tear-out. The router-sled method is useful for flattening large wood cookies, end-grain cutting boards, log-bench ends, or anything else with a lot of end-grain surface area that might not be suitable for a thickness planer. The smoother the result from the router bit, the less time you'll spend hand-planing, scraping, and even worse, sanding.
I started with the Whiteside bit, and later picked up the Infinity bit to see if it would give better results with its upshear/downshear design. I thought about including some very-low-cost bits as well just for kicks, but decided that would only degrade the overall results - The cheapest bits are cheap for a reason and aren't a good long-term value. I also thought about including some more expensive options, but this is coming out of my pocket, so we'll stick with these two for now.
You can skip to the end of the video to see the conclusion, but I usually try to show how I arrived at my conclusion so that you're not just taking the word of some dude on the internet.

I'm using white oak for this experiment, freshly cut from a dead tree. White oak has a closed-grain structure, unlike red oak which has more open pores. The closed pores make white oak more durable for outdoor projects, and for indoor projects where it might get wet, like cutting boards.
Freshly cut wood generally needs one year to air dry for every inch of thickness. Baking in the oven is not a good way to dry wood faster because it will dry the surface too quickly and crack, but I was curious how quickly the wood would dry despite the cracking. End grain tends to move moisture at a much faster rate than edge grain, so I was expecting for the unwrapped piece of wood to dry out more than it did.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. It originally measured 20" in diameter and 10" tall, and I sliced it in half with the chainsaw to make two 5" cookies (final height will be around 3.5 ").
I wanted to dry them without cracking, but since they were free, I decided to take a risk and try something different. I put each cookie inside of a black trash bag and left them in the hot sun every day for a month. I'd remove the cookies each night, shake the water out of the bags, and put the cookies back in for another day. This process drew moisture out of the wood during the day, but the sealed bag prevented the wood from drying unevenly and cracking.
I have no idea what I'm going to build with these other than a couple of end tables, but I had my slab flattening jig out for another project and decided to do some work on the ambrosia maple cookies at the same time. This isn't something I do frequently, so my jig has a small footprint and is easy to stick up on a shelf between uses. The next version will probably have an adjustable height, but for now, I just stack up shims underneath to get the wood to the correct height.
This video would have been a lot more boring if my son hadn't popped his head into the garage to interrupt an otherwise good take of disassembling the jig. I could have filmed it again, but he inspired me retrieve some deleted clips from the recycle bin instead. And that's woodworking in a nutshell: There are very few mistakes that can't be fixed or turned into features with a little creativity, so enjoy the interruptions when you can.

One of my primary uses of Baltic-birch plywood is building things with a mechanical use, like workshop jigs, since it's inclined to stay flat and not wear out easily, especially if any moving parts are waxed. I have also used it to make wooden gears, a baby gate, cabinet parts, knobs, wheels, etc.
If you're looking for Baltic-birch plywood, your best bet is to search locally and possibly be willing to drive a little. Shipping will usually hurt. The closest supplier to me for full sheets is an hour drive one-way. I often order the 12x12-inch pieces from Woodcraft when they occasionally go on sale for a couple dollars, and use them for small projects.

I feel pretty confident saying that most woodworkers are not nearly as safe as they should be in the workshop, and I'm one of them. I know that my tools can remove fingers and eyes, but I also know that my tools have not yet removed fingers nor eyes, so I don't lose a lot of sleep worrying about it. I've been fortunate to have had enough close calls that I know which situations are higher-risk, and therefore merit greater caution, but I don't step in to my workshop each day worried if my socks are going to melt if I touch a drill press with a faulty ground wire.

Sometimes you just gotta treat yourself to nice things. The body is made from some incredibly hard reclaimed oak; the bottom panel is ash; the top includes maple, cherry, chestnut oak, beech, and purpleheart; the spacers are hickory; and the wheel is wenge. The hinges are solid brass, and the bolt and nut are stainless steel. It’s finished with several coats of Waterlox, and buffed with wax to a silky-smooth finish.

This isn't a Forrest vs. Freud video, because I would need two identically-purposed blades for that, but since the Forrest finger-joint and Freud dado blades used in the video are both high-quality, and perform similar functions, I use them to compare the differences between the two types of wide-kerf blade-set choices. It goes without saying that the results might have been different if I was using different brands. If you have some additional experience to share, leave a comment.
For anyone wondering about the chipped tooth shown on the Forrest blade, I contacted the company, and they quickly sent me a warranty replacement. It's always nice to see an outstanding product backed by an outstanding warranty.
There are pros and cons to the various wide-kerf blade choices, and these are some of my opinions:
* Flat-grind finger-joint set * Pros: - Costs about the same as a 10" sawblade, but you get two blades. - You get two (or four) width configurations with one kit. - Flat grind does not leave scoring marks on your finished project. Cons: - No scoring cutters could potentially cause tear-out in cross-grain cuts. - More expensive than router bits. - If you need a wider cut, multiple passes are needed.
* Dado stack * Pros: - Can be configured for a variety of material widths. - Scoring cutters can reduce tear-out in certain materials. - Only one pass required unless you need to go wider than the blade's limit. Cons: - Can take more effort to set up, especially if shims are needed. - Scoring cutters can leave visible machine marks on your finished project. - Chipper blades usually have fewer teeth, which can cause tear-out. - More expensive than router bits.
* Regular #1 flat-grind sawblade * Pros: - Cuts narrow corner splines in a single pass, or wider grooves with multiple passes. - In some cases, can be less expensive than a wide-kerf set. - Normally can function as a regular ripping blade. - Flat grind is less prone to blade flutter than alternate top bevel (ATB). Cons: - If you need to cut wide kerfs, you need to make a lot of passes. - High-quality blades might cost the same as a wide-kerf set. - More expensive than router bits.
* Router bit * Pros: - Inexpensive compared to a new sawblade. - Cuts the same width each time. - More expensive spiral-cut bits can make a very clean cut. Cons: - Sharpening reduces the diameter slightly. - Cutting to the side can shift workpieces if not secured. - Tear-out can happen on the side of the joint, which can be harder to hide.
* Handsaw and chisel * Pros: - Satisfying - Bragging rights - Distraction from life Cons: - Takes forever

You can save money and make finishes last longer by transferring larger containers to smaller ones, adding filler material like pieces of plastic to the can, or displacing the oxygenated air with Bloxygen or propane. Now, I'm giving Stop Loss Bags a shot, because the concept seems fundamentally sound. Full cans are effective at preserving finishes because they contain more finish than air. As the space occupied by liquid decreases, the space occupied by air increases. Chemical-resistant bags allow you to reduce the container size to match the remaining volume of liquid, so there's no air to displace.

The first project I made with this wood, after drying and testing the stability, was a banana holder. I top-coated with satin polyurethane, but strengthened the wood first by thinning some epoxy 50% with alcohol and letting it soak in. That was probably an unnecessary step, but it's an option if you even think a piece of wood is too soft.

CORRECTIONS: At 2:05, I meant one square foot, not one cubic foot. You measure the square footage of the opening to measure how many cubic feet of air is passing through. Of course, I said this right before joking about my math skills, and then proceeded to add a graphic to the video that matched my spoken mistake. I also misspoke the decimal point a couple times, even though it was showing correctly on the meter (zero point seven one, instead of point zero seven one).

If you choose to wear a mask to protect yourself, or to protect others, or if you're not sure whether you should, my intent is to just help clear things up.What happens when you remove the impeller from the planer?The Snekker Show2020-11-08 | The DW735 thickness planer comes with an impeller for removing chips, but I always run my planer connected to a dust collection system. I started to wonder if the impeller was even necessary at that point, or if it was just robbing energy from the cutterhead, so I removed the impeller for a test. At the time of this video, I'd been using it without the impeller for several months to make sure it wasn't going to cause any issues with dust buildup or overheating. As of 2022, I have not noticed any issues related to removing the impeller.
