Woodturning Jewelry - Making a set of Eardrops emgi woodworks 2022-07-07 | Here is a really nice project to use your small scraps of hardwood. An eardrop like this is 10mm wide and just over 30mm long; that is really small. I'm using my collect chuck to hold the workpiece but any chuck with smaller jaws (pen jaws) will probably do the trick as well. These are Meranti with gold colored beads; next is a set in Padauk with silver beads. All the hardware (ear hooks, connecting rings and beads) comes from China. Because I'm planning to do more in this area, I ordered a lot of this stuff at once. That speeds up delivery and I'm good to go for the next few years or maybe even longer. Woodturning a Change Bowl from Ash emgi woodworks 2022-06-09 | After approximately half a year I have tried my luck making a Change Bowl from the Ash which I got in september of 2021. This blank came from a slab which we cut during Chainsaw Saturday and it has spent the winter on the patio, outside but protected from most of the rain. The wood could be a little bit dryer still but seemed dry enough for turning finished pieces. Cutting trees into slabs of about three inches is a good way to create usable wood for turning You can cut it either square stock for handles and such or make blanks of about seven to eight inch square which can be cut to size on the bandsaw. I also used the opportunity to experiment again with my decoration tool, the proper use of which requires somewhat of a learning curve. Quite happy with the final result though. Woodturning - An order for three Ashtrays! emgi woodworks 2022-06-02 | To other woodturners I would like to say: this is definitely a sellable item, in January I got a new order for three ashtrays and probably a few more will be coming this year. This makes them my best selling item to date. Making one is quite a bit of work but you can charge a decent amount because they are not for sale anywhere else and many people like the robust natural look of these. Let me state this clearly once more: I do not smoke myself but as a woodturner I do like to make Ashtrays. What my customers like most is my initial design of a sliced treetrunk with the bark still on and a snuff plate in the middle. I'm fortunate to have a mill for cutting the slots but it can also be done with just a Dremel. Then I have my metal lathe to finish the casted aluminium snuff plates. I'm working on improving the casting process so that I can make them faster. When I get there these may go on sale as well. Post a comment if you are interested. Over time I made a few adjustments to the design, the most important one is to drill out as much of the pith as possible in order to minimize cracks. Still I recommend all customers to keep their ashtray in a cool environment and apply a little moisture to it every now and then. Let me know what you think! Woodturning a Rowan Vase emgi woodworks 2022-05-26 | The year 2022 is the year in which I will be making fewer bowls and more boxes and of course Vases. The Rowan I have is very nice wood for turning, a bit brittle maybe but otherwise it cuts really smooth. The project came out really good. Pop-up Live because its Sunday emgi woodworks 2022-05-23 | A lovely day again here in the Netherlands but I still have a lot of turning to do for the upcoming Craft Fair. A Change Bowl perhaps? I'm using some Poplar which I brought from Germany, lets see if it is any good!
Pop-up Live Preparing for a Craft Sale emgi woodworks 2022-05-22 | After long hesitation I have finally done it! Just sent in my submission to be on the local fair in June with my woodworking products. Apart from selling items I will also try to promote my hobby and maybe score some free wood. You never know what people may have in their backyard. From past experience I alrteady know that bowls are hard to sell, especally if you have only bowls it is going to be wasted time. People want to see something different.So I have planned a production run for making a few wooden Owls, very cute ones and I will have a couple of lidded pots on display and of course Gnomes. In this live I turned the first one that's intended to go on sale. It was an hour's work to make the body on the lathe, the time spent to prepare the blanks is not included and then I still need to make the nose and attach a beard. So one Gnome is easily one and a half to two hours of work and I do not think I can ask more than 10$ or 10Euro. Woodturners are doomed to stay poor!

Woodturning - Rough turning German Oak emgi woodworks 2022-05-12 | From my recent trip to Germany I brought back some Oak from a dead tree which was still standing upright after storm Eunice. That is, it is no longer standing now because I took it down. From the wood I will make a few bowls for friends over there who have recently helped me getting things done like digging a cabletrench. Even though the tree had been dead with no leaves at all for two or three years, the wood was still too wet to turn in one stage. I'm hoping the drying won't take too long so that I can still deliver the finished article this summer. Woodturning a Birch Hollow Form emgi woodworks 2022-04-28 | My first ever hollow form, made from a pretty punky crotchpiece of Birch, with really fantastic spalting. To stabilize the wood, I used Polycryl Wood Fortifier. That worked quite well as far as strengthening the wood is concerned but if there is one thing I learned from this project, it is that you should apply the Polycryl only after doing all the sanding & finishing. Woodturning a Maple Lidded Pot emgi woodworks 2022-03-31 | Another lidded pot, made out of a bone dry piece of Maple. It had one big crack which gave me quite a bit of trouble but fortunately I managed to keep it in one piece. It also had a few bugholes which I filled with a mix of black paint and glitter.Still, Maple is a bit featureless and so it really needed to be decorated. Fortunately the Bosslady stepped in and helped me with that. Woodturning my first Gnome emgi woodworks 2022-03-24 | From the moment I first saw them I wanted to make one myself. The biggest problem was getting the material to make the beard. Finding a nice piece of wood is not easy either but I managed to find a leftover piece of Walnut. This is all still from the tree I felled in 2019 and that wood is now becoming almost sacred (and rare). So it all worked out recently when I managed to buy a piece of fake fur (actually meant to be a rug) which was just right. When you live in NL, go to Action, it costed me 5 euro and cents but now I can make Gnomes for a year and still have enough beards. There probably will be a follow up and that will be a more functional one, with the body drilled out to form a box and the hat as the lid. The Bosslady liked this one a lot as a decoration piece. First Live (test) emgi woodworks 2022-03-20 | Just grabbed a chunk of wood and turned it, with no particular objective in mind. Testing the functionality of the livestream setup was the objective and in that respect I learned a lot. A few viewers turned up and that was of course a bonus. The next show will be better!
A Jewelry Box part 1 - #SegmentMM emgi woodworks 2022-03-17 | This is a project which I have been planning for months now, considering all details and partly because I was afraid it would not be good enough.
