Thrift Flip/Upcycle: Dyeing Cashmere Clothes using Dylon Smoke Grey

Freya and Rosie had loads of fun with the first steps they took to learn to sew and I really enjoyed the whole process - making the clothes and teaching them the bits about sewing that I could.

I'm so proud of how the big skirt with the ruffle and the bodice with the puffy sleeves came out - I think it's got a bit of a forest fairy/fae vibe with a tiny gothic/dark academia twist and I'm absolutely in love with it! It's always nice when I like how the me-made clothes I sew turn out!
See you in the next one!

I was really excited to use my 1962 Singer 306k vintage sewing machine and one of the vintage sewing patterns to make this dress. The pattern (Simplicity 6794) is from 1966 and was given to me, along with the SiBonne snood pattern and some others, by a wonderful friend of mine - and you can watch me unbox those, if you like: youtu.be/t0I4TWWSOp4
The gorgeous quilt in the background of my reveal footage was designed and made by my mama and if you want to make one yourself, she has a pattern available on her shop: https://shorturl.at/auxR6

Images of Cece's mushroom outfits are screen captures from Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. They are low resolution and used for identification in the context of commentary/discussion and make a significant contribution to the viewer’s understanding, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone.
Mandy Barrington's book provided really clear instructions for drafting the stay's panels and I'm so proud of myself for getting through the construction process! It wasn't the easiest project, but I'm pleased with the results - even if I might take a loooong break before I'm ready to tackle historical undergarments/ foundational garments or corsetry again!

This style of overcoat would be a great first coat project for beginners who want to sew their own outerwear! But I would suggest, for a beginner, using lighter weight fabric than I did - it'll save your arms from aching and be more simple to put together!

I do not own or claim to own any of the images or footage used that depict the characters and costumes of The Sandman. Footage and imagery from Netflix's The Sandman have been used for identification in the context of discussion and makes a significant contribution to the viewer’s understanding of the the subject discussed, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone.
And while the splotchy fabric dye results are unfortunate, they're still totally wearable and I will absolutely be wearing them! Sewing with recycled or upcycled materials is always a bit of an experiment, but I enjoy having a cool me made wardrobe section enough that it makes all the surprises and mishaps worth it. 😅
Also, I'm totally in love with how these vintage style/40s style trousers (or pants, for those on the other side of the Atlantic) look on me and fit me! I knew wide legged trousers were a good look for me, but I didn't realise HOW good until I was editing the footage!
The patterns I used for these ~highly altered~ garments are based on are Style 3988 (trousers), NEW LOOK N6594 (blouse) and McCall’s Costumes M4696 (puffy sleeves).
See you in the next one, lovely humans!

It's always fascinating to look through books like this that give so much context to the time period of the vintage clothing, sewing and fashion that I love! Even if some of what Clothing for Moderns and Mabel D Erwin had to say does sound pretty stuffy and strange by today's standards!
But for my Grandma, in her house craft and domestic science teacher training of the early 1950's, I'm sure this book made at least a *bit more* sense!

When I first watched Bernadette Banner's video about making her interpretation of this costume/cosplay and I heard the words 'motorcycle punk Moiraine', I just couldn't _not_ make it!
I really enjoyed working with leather for the first time and definitely want to tackle more leatherwork (perhaps more leather armour) in future!
If you haven't watched season 1 of The Wheel of Time, OMG GO WATCH IT!! It has a fantastically diverse cast in terms of race and body types, tonnes of strong female characters, complete acceptance of all orientations, polyamorous representation, and more humanity than I think i've ever seen in a fantasy show/film.
Thanks so much to Ariel and Bernadette for taking time out to be excited about this project with me! I highly recommend checking out both of their Moiraine costuming adventures!

I always enjoy researching fashion history and clothing history, but I think that looking into the history of fabric dye (and the history of chemical and synthetic fabric dye in particular) has been one of my favourite little history deep dives to date!
Between Paris Green arsenic wallpaper, Scheeles Green arsenic dresses, William Henry Perkin’s aniline purple mauvine dye, the death of artificial florists, and all the other ridiculous, tragic and bizarre confusions, impacts, and inactions - this was an absolutely fascinating subject to dive into!

Cruella Poster image use rationale:
The poster art for Cruella (2021) copyright is believed to belong to the distributor of the item promoted, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the publisher of the item promoted or the graphic artist. Because the image is poster art, a form of product packaging or service marketing, the entire image is needed to identify the product or service, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image. The copy is of sufficient resolution for commentary and identification but lower resolution than the original poster. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as counterfeit artwork, pirate versions or for uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.
As poster art, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the same artwork or poster would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.

It was really interesting to research and learn about! I had obviously seen what bullet bras looked like under clothing and seen pin up images of just the retro lingerie but the history was fascinating! And even though I was thinking the rockin’ fifties when I decided on the project, the bra I actually made was closer to the earlier bullet bras because of its lack of underwire.
Although the closest cousin to the modern underwire bra was invented in the late 1920s, with one of the earliest patents for an underwire brassiere filed in 1929 by Helene Pons, the original bullet bras of the 1940’s were not underwired!
During World War II, many ‘peace time’ industries stopped production and repurposed their business and factories towards the manufacture of weapons and military equipment to aid the war effort. The enormous need for metal for these purposes lead to shortages of metal and interruptions to the import of rubber from Asia. This coupled with the patriotic propaganda around salvage drives on the home front for materials like metal (which had minimal impact economically but significant impact on citizen morale) meant that the availability and wearing of corsets declined significantly. To fill the void left by the absence of their usual lingerie and the need for adequate support in the new jobs that many women were working the bullet bra, or torpedo bra, quickly gained popularity.
The rise of the ’Sweater Girl’ in the popular culture of the late 1940s and the 1950’s, the increasingly dramatic shape of bullet bras because of improvements in technology and the addition of underwires, and their association with sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield kept the bullet bra in fashion well into the 1960s.
I really enjoyed the challenge of creating this bra! I love the look of vintage lingerie and undergarments, but this was the first time I’d considered making my own vintage underwear!
You can see that Victorian walking skirt I mentioned making here: youtu.be/nl1bwW7Vm1Y

I wanted to pay homage to my favourite Terry Pratchett Discworld books and my favourite character from them, Tiffany Aching. I’m really happy with how it came out and really proud of myself for making something this -cool- and this *pretty* with minimal materials. Seriously, apart from foam clay and a few tiny pieces of fake plant, I only used cardboard, paper, wire, paint, a teeny bit of sand, thread, PVA glue and hot glue (LOOOOTS of hot glue)!
I LOVE that the stars glow, and it’s been so nice in the evening to pop on the little fairy lights and see the stars inside the little world I made twinkling away 😊

This video tackles a 1950’s, 1920’s and an Edwardian look! You could also use the 50’s methods to do short 1940s hair by switching up your curl set pattern, and there’s a link below to a Pinterest board of set patterns for different looks!
Also for the 20’s I looked at finger waves, which are actually different from marcel waves (who knew, hey?)! So I think my next vintage hair challenge is learning to marcel wave my hair. I think I have my finger waves and my vintage brush out nailed, so it’s time to move onto the next technique and master that!

I’m happy with the results, and before anyone yells at me in the comment section - I now know that black henna can be dangerous and WHY it can be dangerous. However, the dye that I used very clearly states that it's free of PPD and heavy metals, and that the formulas have been tested under medical supervision. Also its only ingredients are Indigofera Tinctoria Leaf Powder, and Lawsonia Inermis Leaf Extract (or in plain English, Indigo and Henna)
This is the dye that I used for those who are curious: amzn.to/3sBJxEA
